Because such work has occurred in different disciplines, many who have conducted verbal protocol analyses have been unaware of the research of others. This volume brings together the existing literature from the various fields in which verbal protocols of reading have been generated. In so doing, the authors provide an organized catalog of all conscious verbal processes reported in studies to date -- the most complete analysis of conscious reading now available in the literature. When the results of all of the studies are considered, there is clear support for a number of models of reading comprehension including reader response theories, schema perspectives, executive processing models, and bottom-up approaches such as the one proposed by van Dijk and Kintsch. The summary of results also demonstrates that none of the existing models goes far enough. Thus, a new framework -- constructively responsive reading -- is described. This new model encompasses reader response, schematic and executive processing, and induction from word- and phrase-level comprehension to higher-order meaning. The important concept in this new model is that readers respond to bits and pieces of text as they are encountered, all as part of the overarching goal of constructing meaning from text. This volume also includes a critical review of the thinking aloud methodology as it has been used thus far. This examination suggests that it continues to be an immature methodology, and that much work is needed if a complete theory of conscious processing during reading is to be developed via verbal protocol analysis. Finally, after reviewing what has been accomplished to date, the authors provide extensive discussion of the work that remains to be done and the adequacy of the verbal protocol methodology for permitting telling conclusions about text processing.

Book excerpt: A Literacy Action Plan was developed during the 2008-09 school year at Washington Vocational High School as a result of low test scores on the eleventh grade New Jersey High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA). A group of instructors and educational support staff convened as a committee, for the purpose of increasing literacy among students within each career major area. The purpose of this study was to determine if content area reading strategies impact a students' understanding of reading strategies, overall attitudes and habits towards reading, and reading comprehension when enrolled in a career and technical program. The study focused on educators and students in both experimental and comparison groups using multiple sources of data which included the Vaughan Scale, MARSI, Mikulecky Measure, Interviews, and Scholastic Reading Inventory. Although the results were only emerging, the research indicated content area reading strategies taught by career majors in a Career and Technical School led to somewhat increased metacognitive awareness of reading strategies, very slight increases in attitudes and reading habits, and many students in the experimental group exceeding their projected reading comprehension scores as compared to the national norms of the Scholastic Reading Inventory. It is recommended that the school district conduct further longitudinal research to determine whether the growth attributed to the Literacy Action Plan is sustainable. Recommendations from the action plan include the development of a school wide reading curriculum in all Career and Technical Education areas (CTE) content areas. Additional recommendations to support this goal include professional development, access to appropriate reading materials, and implementation through the observation and evaluation process.

Book excerpt: International students, a growing population in US universities, need to possess excellent reading skills in order to succeed. American universities also benefit from admitting students who do not require remedial English classes. Reading online has become an integrated part of college education, which requires students to have additional skills. Awareness and usage of online reading strategies, known as metacognitive online reading strategies, are proven tools to enhance reading skills in online environments. The purpose of this mixed-method study was to investigate the metacognitive online reading strategies employed by highly proficient non-native English-speaking graduate students of Translation, Interpretation and Language Education at Middlebury Institute of International Studies to find out the types of reading strategies students report using, and how they use them when reading an academic text online on a laptop. Two conceptual frameworks were employed to analyze the data: metacognition theory and metacognition model. Quantitative data were collected from 46 students through the Online Survey of Reading Strategies (OSORS). Qualitative data were obtained through recording think-aloud sessions with six volunteers who individually read a TOEFL practice passage and said what they thought as they read the passage. The quantitative findings revealed that students used most of OSORS strategies in the three categories or Global strategies, Problem-solving strategies, and Support strategies. They used problem-solving strategies the most and support strategies the least. The qualitative data analysis revealed that students used most of the strategies that were relevant to the reading task. Moreover, they gave precedence to focusing and maintaining a steady reading pace over other strategies, and bundled related strategies to understand difficult text. Strategies such as slowing the speed of reading, rereading, reading aloud, and guessing meanings were activated together. Data also showed that they students decided on using various computer skills depending on their reading needs, engaging in a parallel metacognitive processing to their reading. Finally, the participants valued reading as part of their career, and made comments on contents of the passage in relation with the real world. Thus, comprehension was not the last step in the metacognitive process, internalizing and remembering the new information was.
