In the process of chasing my body and fitness goals I ended up with constant food cravings, poor digestion, hormone imbalances, and a myriad of other symptoms associated with chronic dieting and overtraining. I wrote this book to share the knowledge that allowed me to finally recover after living for six years with a "damaged" metabolism and an eating disorder. My goal is to help you makes sense of your food cravings and other symptoms of metabolic adaptation. "Your body and mind aren't 'broken', they just think you're starving" In this book you will discover: Why your metabolism isn't truly "broken" and how to fix it. The 20 most common Metabolism Recovery Questions answered in detail. How to finally be satisfied after meals by learning the secrets of physical hunger vs brain hunger. The two main types of hormonal imbalances caused by dieting and overtraining and how to fix them. How to escape the trap of intuitive dieting and finally perfect the art of intuitive eating. Why "Emotional" eating is often not emotional at all, but rather the result of altered hunger hormones. The 5 Keys to Metabolism Recovery in detail. How Binge Eating and Bulimia are often due to hormonal dysregulation rather than psychological problems. Why you aren't truly "addicted" to food, but why it feels like you are. How to shift your paradigm to end the war between you and your survival instincts. Why traditional diets are so hard to stick to. Hint: it's not about willpower. Why you still have cravings and other symptoms despite being at a "normal" weight. The three-quarter of a century old study that demystifies eating disorders. Why body positivity is not necessary for recovery. How traditional therapy and nutrition advice can actually prolong your recovery. The most common roadblocks to recovering your metabolism. Why dieting "hacks" like cheat meals can make disordered eating worse. How to finally take back the power from food so you can enjoy your time with friends and family. Stop Restricting, Recover Your Metabolism, and Take Back the Power from Food

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of the life sciences may be said to have effected a gradual transition from a more or less intuitive prescientific approach based on crude observation, via a more refined type of observation to experimentation and hence to the level of formal theories. Quantitative methods are introduced at the second level; they comprise: (a) quantitative design of experiments; (b) regrouping of experimental results; (c) evalua tion of results by means of mathematical or special statistical techniques. The last step implies the introduction of theoretical concepts, but we are not justified in speaking of theoretical science unless true theoretical con siderations-models or hypotheses-precede experiment, and this is then followed by an attempt to link results with theory so as to verify the theory. Biology at present seems to lie somewhere between the second and third level mentioned above, not yet having achieved the status of a theoretical science in all its branches. Thus, though the need for quantification and mathematical formulation is widely recognized, many biologists still believe that e.g. general systems theory is too abstract to be of use in handling concrete problems. Those, however, who look critically at the present state of affairs cannot adopt this attitude.

Book excerpt: This volume is one of those published from the proceedings of the invited lectures to the First International Congress of Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry I organized at Liege (Belgium) in August 1984 under the auspices of the Section of Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry of the International Union of Biological Sciences. In a general foreword to these different volumes, it seems to me appropriate to consider briefly what may be the comparative approach. Living organisms, beyond the diversity of their morphological forms, have evolved a widespread range of basic solutions to cope with the different problems, both organisma1 and environmenta1 with which they are faced. Soon after the turn of the century, some biologists realized that these solutions can be best comprehended in the frame work of a comparative approach integrating results of physiologica1 and biochemica1 studies done at the organismic, cellular and molecular levels. The development of this approach amongst both physiologists and biochemists remained, however, extremely slow until recently.

Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been rapid growth in knowledge pertaining to the nervous system. This has, in some measure, been due to the development and application of a number of techniques such as the 2-deoxyglucose method and microchemical methods for measuring metabolites and regional cerebral blood flow. Data from the application of these techniques are just beginning to be collected, and the next few years promise to bring many new and exciting findings. The study of energy metabolism in brain is particularly interesting due to the fact that although the brain has scant energy reserves (as compared with the liver), it has one of the highest metabolic rates in the body. Recent studies from several laboratories have shown a surprising divergence of re sponses to metabolic insult in different areas of brain. In this regard, the cer ebellum, for example, may have metabolic features which are uniqve from those of any other region. The high-energy phosphate compounds ATP and phos phocreatine, supplied by the oxidative metabolism of glucose, are necessary for normal cerebral functions such as the maintenance of membrane potentials, transmission of impulses, and synthetic processes. Interruption of substrate or "poisoning" of the system by a variety of means lead to a rapid change in cellular energetics, and ultimately cell death. From the clinical standpoint, an interesting feature of metabolic encephalopathy is that in many cases, early diagnosis and treatment may result in a rapid reversal of symptoms.

The selection first elaborates on free energy and metabolism, enzymes in metabolic sequences, and glycolysis. Discussions focus on comparative biochemistry of glycolysis, enzymes of the glycolytic cycle, oxidative conversion of glucose to tetrose, transmethylation, and free energy and its determination. The manuscript then examines the tricarboxylic acid cycle and other pathways of carbohydrate metabolism. The text ponders on the biosynthesis of complex saccharides, including mechanisms of disaccharide formation, syntheses of branched polysaccharides, synthesis of levan from sucrose, and reversibility reactions by hydrolytic enzymes. The publication then elaborates on fat metabolism and acetoacetate formation and sterol and steroid metabolism. Topics include androgens, sterols, phospholipides or phosphatides, path of fat absorption, and theories of fatty acid breakdown and acetoacetate formation. The selection is a dependable reference for researchers interested in the chemical pathways of metabolism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heart has a very high energy demand but very little energy reserves. In order to sustain contractile function, the heart has to continually produce a large amount of ATP. The heart utilizes free fatty acids mainly and carbohydrates to some extent as substrates for making energy and any change in this energy supply can seriously compromise cardiac function. It has emerged that alterations in cardiac energy metabolism are a major contributor to the development of a number of different forms of heart disease. It is also now known that optimizing energy metabolism in the heart is a viable and important approach to treating various forms of heart disease. Cardiac Energy Metabolism in Health and Disease describes the research advances that have been made in understanding what controls cardiac energy metabolism at molecular, transcriptional and physiological levels. It also describes how alterations in energy metabolism contribute to the development of heart dysfunction and how optimization of energy metabolism can be used to treat heart disease. The topics covered include a discussion of the effects of myocardial ischemia, diabetes, obesity, hypertrophy, heart failure, and genetic disorders of mitochondrial oxidative metabolism on cardiac energetics. The treatment of heart disease by optimizing energy metabolism is also discussed, which includes increasing overall energy production as well as increasing the efficiency of energy production and switching energy substrate preference of the heart. This book will be a valuable source of information to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and investigators in the field of experimental cardiology as well as biochemists, physiologists, pharmacologists, cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons and other health professionals.
