Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is directed primarily to advanced graduate and medical students, postdoctoral trainees, and established investigators having basic research interests in neoplasia. Its content is based in part on the lecture outlines and selected histopathology laboratory components of an advanced course entitled The Pathobiology of Experimental Animal and Human Neoplasia, developed by me for the Experimental Pathology Curriculum of the Department of Pathology at the Medical College of Virginia. In this regard, an effort has been made to integrate pathology with carcinogenesis, genetics, biochemistry, and cellular and molecular biology in order to present a comprehensive and current view of the neoplastic process. For focus, emphasis is mainly being placed on the neoplastic cells themselves, and not on associated host-mediated responses. It ishoped that this book will accomplish its purpose of providing students and researchers who already possess strong but diverse basic science backgrounds with unifying concepts in tumor pathobiology, so as to stimulate new research aimed at furthering our understanding of neoplastic disease. I wish to express my appreciation and heartfelt thanks to the authors, whose individual ranges of expertise and research experience clearly bring to their respective chapters unique perspectives that easily transcend any redundancy that may be present. In addition, I am grateful to Drs. George Vennart, Saul Kay, and Fred Meier, and to Ms. Connie Wilkerson of the Department of Pathology at MCV, for their helpful comments and their review of some of the material.

The book is composed of selected scientific papers written by experts in the field. The text presents topics on naturally occurring mutagens; occupational carcinogen; and evaluation of cooking methods. Experiments on mammalian cell mutation; chromosomal aberrations; and organisms that can be used as environmental monitors of toxicity are discussed as well. Ecologists, environmental and sanitary engineers, toxicologists, and anyone interested in environmental mutagenesis, genetic toxicology, occupational health, or the regulation of toxic substances will find the book a good source of insight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The compilation of this book was prompted by the necessity of a bench volume which could provide the necessary background information on materials, experimental design, pitfalls and dificulties, in order to perform a particular test in an acceptable way with a minimal need for additional expert help. This Second Edition updates this information, providing: - a comprehensive bench guide - methods known to be reliable - a broad spectrum of approaches - tips to avoid pitfalls when using unfamiliar techniques - data from population records - safety aspects of mutagens and carcinogens - basic statistical concepts for experiment design This `on the bench' methodological text provides the necessary information for most of the common assays for genetic damage in use. The book includes methods which have been sufficiently used and tested to make their use reliable, but also presents methods which are not widely used at present, but which might prove most useful in screening for mutagenic effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New developments in the study of environmental mutagens continue to evolve in this rapidly emerging field. In Volume 7 of Chemical Mutagens, we have focused on various new techniques for the detection of genetic damage in somatic cells and germ cells of mammals and the use of lower eukaryotic microorganisms to detect aneuploidy as well as other types of genetic damage. Attention has also been given to the role of in vitro metabolic activation as a mechanism for modifying the genetic effects of different environmental chemicals. In a chapter on compar ative mutagenesis, reaction kinetics and their relationship to the mu tagenic action of monofunctional alkylating agents in higher eukaryotic organisms are examined. In another chapter, the pharmacology and toxicology of nitrites and nitrates, which are in widespread distribution in the environment, are discussed in detail. The books in this series have provided a mechanism for the publication of many important new developments in the study of the genetic effects of environmental chemicals. This series was launched by Dr. Alexander Hollaender who, beginning in 1971, edited Volumes 1-4 and then coedited Volumes 5-7. The success of his lO-year effort with these volumes is another testimony to Dr. Hollaender's many contri butions to the field of environmental mutagenesis. As Dr.

This volume derives directly from the presentations at the symposium. The University of Surrey, which is located in Guildford, Surrey, provided a congenial atmosphere for this conference and we would like to take this opportunity to thank the local organizing committee and especially Dr. G. Gordon Gibson, for all their efforts in both scientific and social arrangements. Special thanks are extended also to the graduate students of the Biochemistry Department (especially Ms. Tricia Breacker and Mr. Paul Tamburini) and to the conference secretaries who unstintingly gave of their time in a variety of roles to ensure the smooth functioning of the symposium. We wish to acknowledge the tireless efforts of the distinguished scientists who agreed to chair the sessions of the symposium: A. Hildebrandt (BRD), H. Remmer (BRD), L. Goldberg (USA), S. Orrenius (Sweden), H. Uehleke (BRD), J.R. Gillette (USA), C. Netter (BRD), M. Mercier (Belgium), F. Oesch (BRD), E. Boyland (UK), J.E. Gibson (USA), C.D. Klaassen (USA) and J.W. Gorrod (UK). The mounting of a large scale international symposium is fraught with many impediments, not the least of which are the financial and logistical problems of assembling a group of internationally distinguished scientists in one place at the same time. Success in such endeavors requires concerned and active sponsors. The three sponsoring
