Eng. Geógrafo. Virgínia Maria Alves Benchimol: Especialista em Docência do Ensino Superior. Especialista em Psicopedagogia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The starting point for this collection is a chapter by Dick Allwright on the language learning and teaching classroom experience entitled Six Promising Directions in Applied Linguistics. The other distinguished contributors respond to this discussion with their own interpretations and from their own experience. The collection problematizes prescription, efficiency, and technical solutions as orientations to classroom language learning. Complexity and idiosyncrasy, on the other hand, are recognized as central concepts in a move towards centralizing teachers' and learners' own understanding of 'classroom life', in the contexts of language learning, adult literacy education and language teacher education.

Book excerpt: The first comprehensive examination of injuries associated with adventure and extreme sports This book reviews the existing data on the frequency and distribution of injuries and the factors contributing to injuries in adventure and extreme sports. Further, it suggests injury prevention strategies and provides recommendations for future research. Providing the first comprehensive compilation of epidemiological data over a range of new age sports considered to be adventurous and extreme, this publication is also the first of its kind to track down all of the major literature associated with the topic. A uniform and evidence-based approach to organizing and interpreting the literature is used in all chapters. All of the sport-specific chapters are laid out with the same basic headings making it easier for the reader to find common information across chapters. Sports physicians, physical therapists, recreation managers, researchers, injury prevention specialists, the adventure and extreme sport industry, and the adventure and extreme sport participants themselves will find the book useful in identifying problem areas in which appropriate preventive measures can be initiated to reduce the risk and severity of injuries. They will also want to use the book as a source for future research related to injuries in adventure and extreme sports.

Book excerpt: Resistance training has moved from the universe of personal experiences, superficiality and common sense, to systematized, rational and experimentation-focused knowledge. This book is the fruit of this reality. Physical activity enthusiasts and professionals will find from a brief review of the principles of training to the fine adjustments of resistance training such as: range of motion, exercise dose and selection of the stimulus. Many people give up resistance training because they do not obtain the expected results. Through this didactic and profound work, the variables will be exposed and the paths to the best program will be pointed out. Criticism of obsolete models, paradigms breaking and sustainable resistance training are some of the themes that the author discusses with great propriety. The book represents a perfect union of theory and practice. Written by someone with more than 20 years of practical experience and, at the same time, one of the world's most exceptional researchers on resistance training. A success in terms of sales and amongst critics, the book is in its sixth edition in Portuguese and it is the most widely read book on the theme in its original language, positioning itself as a bestseller since its release and obtaining major awards. This is undoubtedly a work that will contribute to the personal and professional growth of those who are interested and work in the area.

Book excerpt: While it is accepted that sport coaches should safeguard participants, Care in Sport Coaching: Pedagogical Cases argues that coaches have a duty of care that moves beyond protection and involves the development of caring relationships with athletes. Recent high-profile incidents of abuse in sport highlight the need to reposition coaching as a caring activity and to embed care within coach education and coaching policy. Based around extended case studies, this book provides grounded accounts of how coaches care in their everyday practice. These case studies are analysed using multidisciplinary theoretical perspectives to illustrate and problematise how coaches care. Conclusions are provided, based on these analyses, that will help coach educators, researchers and policy makers establish care as a key facet of everyday sport coaching activities. Additionally, the book offers guidelines that will aid practitioners to enact care in their practice. This is important reading for coaches, researchers, lecturers and students who are concerned with the role of coaches and the development of coaching practice.
