Chapters 1 to 3 pursue a critique of traditional methods of qualitative research and ethnographic writing, not simply pointing out the many flaws, as has been done many times already, but presenting constructive alternatives where needed. The result is a clear eyed way forward. Chapters 4 to 15 put the lessons from the theoretical first chapters to the test using English culture as a case study. It asks the most obvious questions: Does Englishness exist? If so, where does it exist? What does it look like? etc. etc. The answers are found in a moderately holistic approach that incorporates data from physical anthropology, history and archeology, linguistics and folklore as well as cultural studies. Considerable emphasis is given to how the Georgian and Victorian eras laid down so much of what is considered Englishness today. The book is somewhat autoethnographic, somewhat reflexive, somewhat emic, and somewhat etic (given that I was not born in England, but my mother was English, and I lived there for 9 years - and return regularly because I have family and close friends living there). I am not an insider, not an outsider.

Law notes that “social…science investigations interfere with the world…things change as a result. The issue, then, is not to seek disengagement but rather with how to engage” (ibid p14). Drawing on their own situated experiences, the book’s contributors address the “messy” implications of this and also explore the (equally messy) issue of why engage. They reflect on the process of undertaking research, and their role in the research process as they negotiate their own position in the field. What is ethnography “for”? What impact should, or do, we have in the field and after we leave the research site? What about unintended consequences? When (if ever) are we “off duty?” What does “informed consent” mean in a constantly shifting, dynamic ethnographic context? Is ethnography by its very nature a form of “action research?” By providing a wide range of situated explorations of “messy ethnographies,” the book presents a unique, hands-on guide to the challenges of negotiating ethnography in practice, which will be of use to all researchers and practitioners who use ethnography as a method.

Beginning as a beautiful bed covering, a quilt may later function as a ground cover at picnics until years of wear relegate it to someone's ragbag for scrap uses. Observing this life cycle led authors John Forrest and Deborah Blincoe to the idea that quilts, like living things, have a natural history that can be studied scientifically. They explore that natural history through an examination of the taxonomy, morphology, behavior, and ecology of quilts in their native environment—the homes of humans who make, use, keep, and bestow them. The taxonomy proposed by Forrest and Blincoe is rooted in the mechanics of replicating quilts so that it can be used to understand evolutionary and genetic relationships between quilt types. The morphology section anatomizes normal and abnormal physical features of quilts, while the section on conception and birth in the life cycle discusses how the underlying processes of replication intersect with environmental factors to produce tangible objects. This methodology is applicable to many kinds of crafts and will be of wide interest to students of folklore, anthropology, and art history.
