Book Synopsis The U.S. War with Mexico by : Ernesto Chavez
Download or read book The U.S. War with Mexico written by Ernesto Chavez and published by Macmillan Higher Education. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. war with Mexico was a pivotal event in American history, it set crucial wartime precedents and served as a precursor for the impending Civil War. With a powerful introduction and rich collection of documents, Ernesto Ch‡vez makes a convincing case that as an expansionist war, the U.S.-Mexico conflict set a new standard for the acquisition of foreign territory through war. Equally important, the war racialized the enemy, and in so doing accentuated the nature of whiteness and white male citizenship in the U.S., especially as it related to conquered Mexicans, Indians, slaves, and even women. The war, along with ongoing westward expansion, heightened public debates in the North and South about slavery and its place in newly-acquired territories. In addition, Ch‡vez shows how the political, economic and social development of each nation played a critical role in the path to war and its ultimate outcome. Both official and popular documents offer the events leading up to the war, the politics surrounding it, popular sentiment in both countries about it, and the war's long-term impact on the future development and direction of these two nations. Headnotes, a chronology, maps and a selected bibliography enrich student understanding of this important historical moment.

Book excerpt: In his last message to Congress, delivered on December 5, 1848, President James K. Polk described the magnificent efforts that had led to victory in the war with Mexico. He praised those civilians who had directed the military in "a vast extent of territory, hundreds and even thousands of miles apart from each other." He took special pride in the cooperative efforts of the Army and Navy: "Both branches of the service performed their whole duty to the country ... There was concert between the heads of the two arms of the service ... By this means their combined power was brought to bear successfully on the enemy."

He died within three months of departing Washington."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Presidents, Polk to Hayes. What They Did. What They Said, What Was Said About Them is the second book in a planned five volume series, covering all the Presidents. These 43 men (so far) have succeeded in some regards and failed in others as they strove to do the best they could in what is surely one of the most difficult jobs in the world. Only they can truly appreciate what it takes to be the president. Others can only speculate. People feel strongly about U.S. Presidents. Some they admire – others they hate. It is fair game to criticize a president’s actions and policies. However, questioning their commitment to American ideals seems like hitting below the belt. There are no willing villains. Most people can find justification for their actions, beliefs, and prejudices. Each president strove to do the best he could for the nation and its people. This goal of the book is not to praise presidents, nor is it to condemn them. The subtitle of each of the five books in the series: What They Did. What They Said, What Was Said About Them, perfectly describes the approach adopted to tell their stories in a unique, way, meant to entertain as well as inform. Readers are asked to make their own judgments of the presidencies based on more information that the semi-myths they may recall History courses or what is preached in the many longstanding and despicable negative campaigning, mudslinging and character assassination reports they hear from partisans. One can find much to admire about each of the presidents and unfortunately much to deplore. Soldiers are told that in giving salutes to officers is not honoring the individuals, but rather their rank. If there are presidents, readers just feel they cannot salute, hopefully they can salute the presidency.
Book Synopsis Gold Rush of California by : Robert Badella
Download or read book Gold Rush of California written by Robert Badella and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Sutter and James Marshall actually formed a partnership together on August 27, 1847 for the purpose of building a saw mill along the American River located in the Sacramento Valley. While inspecting the waters depth of a tailrace ditch on January 24th 1848, Marshall apparently discovered what appeared to be gold. For them to obtain legal title of that gold, Sutter and Marshall officially presented a lease agreement to Governor Richard Mason of the State. Significantly large quantities of gold had been taken out of its southern fork on this American River which subsequently led to the discovery of Mormon Island as well as other gold mining camps. Within 1849 over 80,000 mining prospectors were widely scattered throughout the San Joaquin and Sacramento Valleys. Many of these gold seekers merely arrived at California by steamship via Cape Horn while others mainly came overland across the Oregon Trail. In fact a substantial number of Argonauts were making their seaward expedition to California while coming from Chile and Peru. During 1854 at least 300,000 thousand men had been curiously roaming the California foothills regional area for its contingent quest of gold. Furthermore this tremendous impact which was brought upon by that California gold rush was perhaps one of the greatest events in history.
