Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " The underground railroad—with its mysterious signals, secret depots, abolitionist heroes, and slave-hunting villains—has become part of American mythology. But legend has distorted much of this history. Larry Gara shows how pre-Civil War partisan propanda, postwar remininscences by fame-hungry abolitionists, and oral tradition helped foster the popular belief that a powerful secret organization spirited floods of slaves away from the South. In contrast to much popular belief, however, the slaves themselves had active roles in their own escape. They carried out their runs, receiving aid only after they had reached territory where they still faced return. The Liberty Line puts slaves in their rightful position: the center of their struggle for freedom.

Download or read book Natural Resources, Neither Curse nor Destiny written by Daniel Lederman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-10-23 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Natural Resources: Neither Course nor Destiny' brings together a variety of analytical perspectives, ranging from econometric analyses of economic growth to historical studies of successful development experiences in countries with abundant natural resources. The evidence suggests that natural resources are neither a curse nor destiny. Natural resources can actually spur economic development when combined with the accumulation of knowledge for economic innovation. Furthermore, natural resource abundance need not be the only determinant of the structure of trade in developing countries. In fact, the accumulation of knowledge, infrastructure, and the quality of governance all seem to determine not only what countries produce and export, but also how firms and workers produce any good.
Download or read book Message of Isham G. Harris written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Message of Isham G. Harris: Governor of Tennessee, to the General Assembly of the State, October 5, 1859 Take this amount from the gross aggregate expenditures of the two years, and it leaves, as the actual expenditures for the ordinary purposes of government, including the payment of interest on actual indebtedness of the State, the sum of $1,362,677 90. The most rigid scrutiny into all the expenditures of the government is invoked, in order that they may be reduced to the lowest point consistent with public justice and sound public policy. It will be seen from the Comptrollers report, that the aggregate taxable property of the State amounts to $377,208,641 00, being an increase of taxable property, since the 1st October, 1857, of 876,849,830 00; and that the receipts into the Treasury for the last two fiscal years have been considerably more than sufficient to meet the expenditures of the same period. In this connection, it is proper that I call your attention to the fact, that sixty-six thousand six hundred and sixty-six dollars and sixty-six cents of the bonds of the State, issued for State stock in the Nashville, Murfreesboro' and Shelbyville Turnpike Company, fail due on the 25th July, 1861, the duty of providing for the payment of which devolves upon your present session.
