Book excerpt: Continuous salinity and/or temperature profiles were made off the coast of Monterey Bay monthly between August 1973 and August 1974 and on a spatial grid finer than is conventionally used. A procedure is described to convert the data from analog to digital form, process these data on an IBM 360 computer, and print out the results by station for each month. The results show water mass features of small spatial scale detectable only because of the small grid spacing. A gyre or filament structure is suggested by the north to south variation between lines of stations. The extent of the area of the survey is insufficient to describe completely the water mass structure on both the eastern and western boundaries; however, the temporal variation in the observed water mass structure is consistent with the three oceanographic seasons described for the California Current system. Elements of relatively cold water and relatively warm water masses are identified in the area of survey. (Author).

This book was released on 1975 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mesoscale components of the geostrophic flow and its temporal and spatial variability are discussed for the oceanic region west of the continental shelf off Monterey Bay. The results were obtained from spatially dense observations on thirteen cruises between Aug 73 and Aug 74. Patterns of current flow indicated by drogues and geostrophy tend to confirm an analysis of the structure which has alternating elements of poleward and equatorward flow. Surface current flow patterns are similar to those found at depths to 375 m. The bottom topography influences the direction of flow inside the 1,000 fathom curve. Seasonal variations of the geostrophic flow and salt transport were congruent with Skogsberg's (1936) annual cycle composed of three distinct oceanographic seasons. The flow and structure in the area are complex with flow elements less than 10 km in width. The data suggest that observations on a sampling grid length less than 10 km transverse to the current flow, and extensive independent current measurements are required to describe adequately the small-scale features of the flow, structure and its time variations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seasonal, monthly, weekly, and hourly sea level variability at Monterey, California is described and the oceanic and atmospheric processes which cause these variations are examined. Monthly mean sea level anomalies at Monterey are significantly correlated with those observed at tide stations as distant as Prince Rupert, Canada and Callao, Peru, indicating that these anomalies are related to large scale rather than to strictly local atmospheric or oceanic changes. Multiple regression analysis indicates that monthly anomalies of atmospheric pressure, sea surface temperature, and meridional wind stress account for much of the observed monthly sea level variability. Sea level elevations at Monterey, when adjusted for the atmospheric pressure (barometric) effect, show a seasonal high in winter and a minimum in spring. These seasonal variations are in phase with those of nearby steric height observations. There is also good agreement between weekly mean sea level and steric height observations in a time-series sense. Because of the close agreement between sea level and steric height, and the high correlation of Monterey sea level with that at nearby tide stations, steric height and sea level variations both must be related to variations in the geostrophic current flow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water masses in Monterey Bay are determined from the CTD casts of the Monterey Ocean Observing System (MOOS) Upper-water-column Science Experiment (MUSE) August 2000 dataset. It is shown through cluster analysis that the MUSE 2000 CTD dataset contains 5 water masses. These five water masses are bay surface water (BSW), bay warm water (BWW), bay intermediate water (BIW), subarctic upper water (SUW), and North Pacific deep water (NPDW). The BWW is a new water mass that exists in one area and is attributed to the effects of solar heating. The volumes occupied by each of the water masses are obtained. The BIW water is the most dominant water mass and occupies 68.8% of the volume. The statistical means and standard deviations for each water parameter, including spiciness and oxygen concentration, are calculated during separate upwelling and relaxed periods. The water mass content and structure are analyzed and studied during upwelling and a relaxed period. During upwelling, along a CTD track off Pt. Ano Nuevo, the water mass Temperature-Salinity distribution tended to be organized along three branches. Off Pt. Ano Nuevo the innovative coastal observation network (ICON) model showed the formation of a cyclonic eddy during the analyzed upwelling period. In time the eddy moved southwest and became absorbed into the southerly flow during the initial phases of the following wind-relaxed period.
