Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of fundamental nuclear forces emerged gradually during the start of the 1930s and reached our present level of description some time before the 1950s. The Origin of the Concept of Nuclear Forces presents a unified, comprehensive account of the history of this important part of the modern scientific worldview. In addition, the authors, foremost experts in the field, examine the sociological and philosophical aspects of the story in light of the various theories of scientific development. The book contains analyses of published work, archival materials, and original interviews. It will be appealing primarily to historians of science and physicists interested in the roots of their field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The simplest model of nuclear matter is a collection of point nucleons interacting through a two-body potential that accounts for scattering data and the properties of the deuteron. In order to use and to test this model we must be able, for a given two-body potential, to 'calculate the l 9 corresponding saturation curve of nucle~r matter. The Brueckner-Bethe metho- is one method of making this calculation. The available evidence suggests that, at present, the Brueckner-Bethe method can be used to locate the saturation point with an uncertainty of -1 2-3 MeV in energy and about 0.1 fm in~. This is not very high accuracy, but it is good enough to make a start on physically interesting calculations. In this paper I describe the Brueckner-Bethe method and illustrate it with numerical results. Some of the results are designed to test the accuracy of the method, some are comparisons with variational calculations, and a saturation curve for the full Reid potential is given.

This book was released on 2016-11-27 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well established that the forces between nucleons are transmitted by mesons. According to the meson theory, the quantitative explanation of the nuclear forces was extremely tentative and incomplete. But this theory presents a valuable point of view. It is fairly certain now that the nucleons within nuclear matter are in a state made rather different from their free condition by the proximity of other nucleons .Charge independence of nuclear forces demand the existence of neutral meson as amongst the same type of nucleons (P-P) or (N-N). This force demands the same spin and the same orbital angular momentum. The exchange interaction is produced by only a neutral meson. The involving mesons without electric charge that it gives exchange forces between protons and Neutrons. Also therefore maintains charge independence character. It is evident for the nature of the products that neutral mesons decay by both strong and weak interactions. It means that neutral mesons' constituents are responsible for the electromagnetic interaction. Dramatically neutral mesons play an important role for both electromagnetic and nuclear forces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern nuclear physics is a well developed branch of physical science, with wide-ranging applications of its results in engineering and industry. At the same time, the development of a consistent theory of nuclei and nuclear processes presents certain problems. It is well known that the most important aim of nuclear physics is the study of nuclear structure and the explanation of properties on the basis of the interaction between nucleons which constitute nuclei. Difficulties of a modern theory of the nucleus are caused by both an insufficient knowledge of nuclear interactions and the multi particle character of nuclear systems. Experimental data on nuclear interactions do not contradict the hypothesis of the pair character of nuclear forces. However, the absence of rigorous meth ods of calculations of many particle nuclear systems with strong interaction makes it necessary to use macroscopic nuclear models to describe particular nuclear properties. Nuclear models have been developed in different ways, and the models themselves have been modified and complicated. In spite of the visible discrepancy, different models of the nucleus significantly supple ment one another. The development of nuclear models has led to considerable progress in the understanding of atomic nuclei. The current results of theo retical nuclear physics are reported in numerous scientific papers. The most important and relevant experimental and theoretical results can be found in many monographs, the best of which are written by well-known experts in the field.
Book Synopsis Nuclear Methods and the Nuclear Equation of State by : Marcello Baldo
Download or read book Nuclear Methods and the Nuclear Equation of State written by Marcello Baldo and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-11-15 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theoretical study of the nuclear equation of state (EOS) is a field of research which deals with most of the fundamental problems of nuclear physics. This book gives an overview of the present status of the microscopic theory of the nuclear EOS. Its aim is essentially twofold: first, to serve as a textbook for students entering the field, by covering the different subjects as exhaustively and didactically as possible; second, to be a reference book for all researchers active in the theory of nuclear matter, by providing a report on the latest developments. Special emphasis is given to the numerous open problems existing at present and the prospects for their possible solutions. The general framework of the different approaches presented in the book is the meson theory of nuclear forces — where no free parameter is introduced — and the many-body treatment of nucleon-nucleon correlations. The ultimate hope of this world-wide effort is the understanding of the structure of nuclear matter, both in the ground state and at finite temperature. The main audience addressed is the community of theoretical nuclear physicists, but nuclear experimentalists and astrophysicists will also find in the book an extensive amount of material of direct interest for their everyday work, particularly for those studying heavy-ion collisions, where the nuclear EOS is of special relevance. Finally, theoretical physicists working on elementary particle theory could find in the book some stimulating ideas and problems directly related to their field.
