Book excerpt: It is necessary to develop a [pi]N model which contains, at least qualitatively, the mechanisms originated from some fundamental theory of strong interactions. QCD is now commonly accepted as the fundamental theory of the strong interaction. However, due to the great mathematical complexities, it is still not possible to describe the nuclear phenomena, e.g., [pi]N and NN interactions from it. On the other hand, models based on meson-exchange picture have been very successful in describing the NN phase shifts and observables. It is therefore reasonable to assume that the [pi]N dynamics at low and intermediate energies can be described by the same approach. The degree of success of such a meson-exchange [pi]N model would depend on the consistency in the parameters employed, e.g., masses and coupling constants, as compared to those used in the meson-exchange NN model. In this paper, we report on the development of a [pi]N model starting from an effective Lagrangian. We introduce a three-dimensional reduction of the Lagrangian field theory for deriving from a [pi]N scattering equation. The constructed model can be readily applied to resolve the above-mentioned important problems in the field of intermediate energy nuclear physics. We present our preliminary results and discuss future improvements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computation is essential to our modern understanding of nuclear systems. Although simple analytical models might guide our intuition, the complex ity of the nuclear many-body problem and the ever-increasing precision of experimental results require large-scale numerical studies for a quantitative understanding. Despite their importance, many nuclear physics computations remain something of a black art. A practicing nuclear physicist might be familiar with one or another type of computation, but there is no way to systemati cally acquire broad experience. Although computational methods and results are often presented in the literature, it is often difficult to obtain the working codes. More often than not, particular numerical expertise resides in one or a few individuals, who must be contacted informally to generate results; this option becomes unavailable when these individuals leave the field. And while the teaching of modern nuclear physics can benefit enormously from realistic computer simulations, there has been no source for much of the important material. The present volume, the second of two, is an experiment aimed at address ing some of these problems. We have asked recognized experts in various aspects of computational nuclear physics to codify their expertise in indi vidual chapters. Each chapter takes the form of a brief description of the relevant physics (with appropriate references to the literature), followed by a discussion of the numerical methods used and their embodiment in a FOR TRAN code. The chapters also contain sample input and test runs, as well as suggestions for further exploration.

This book was released on 2003-01-15 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with both the experimental and theoretical aspects of meson physics; in particular, it presents new results. The main topics are: hadronic and electromagnetic meson production in various reactions; meson interaction with mesons, nucleons and nuclei; the structure of hadrons; mesons and fundamental symmetries; exotic systems. The book provides an overview of the current status of these areas, as well as of new developments, besides giving a preview of the forthcoming investigations.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the investigation of the strongly interacting hadrons ? to a quark model operating with effective color particles, constituent quarks, massive effective gluons and diquarks. The study of strong interactions based on effective constituent particles requires a solid ground of experimental data, which we now have at our disposal with the serious progress made in the investigation of hadrons, especially meson states. The present understanding of QCD applied to strong interactions can be distorted by prejudices. Therefore, the way followed by the quark model is to rely on the experiment and to restore the effective Hamiltonian on the basis of QCD on the one hand, and, on the other, of the spectral integral method.Baryon-baryon and antibaryon-baryon interactions are studied with the purpose of unambiguous applications of the written formulae to the interpretation of experimental data ? to the observation of new meson and baryon resonances. The technique used is the spin-orbital momentum expansion of the amplitude. This method is our basic approach to the proper treatment of experimental data. The photon-induced reactions are also considered and the problem of form factors is discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference Mesons and Light Nuclei, organized by the Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP), Rez, was held during July 2 - 7, 1995 in small north Bohemian town Straz pod Ralskem. It was the sixth in a series of meetings which took place previously at Liblice 74 and 81, Bechyne 85 and 88, and Prague 91. The conferences gained already their firm position among intermediate energy nuclear physics activities. International nuclear physics community strongly supported our intention to continue the series. This year's venue for the conference was the accommodation and social area of the DIAMO company at Straz. The goal of the meeting was to summarize the present situation and the future perspectives concerning the experimental investigations and theoreti cal descriptions of light nuclei and their interactions with electromagnetic and hadronic probes, mainly at intermediate energies. The scientific program of the conference included the following areas of research: nuclear physics with pions and antiprotons, T)-meson physics, baryonic systems with strangeness, relativis tic few-body dynamics, and electroweak nuclear interaction. Representatives from many international groups working within different experimental facili ties and with different theoretical methods were invited and asked to present their latest results and future research programs. The Straz conference, attended by 102 physicist from institutions in 22 countries, was sponsored by the Austrian Ministry for Science and Research, Czech Ministry for Industry and Trade, and by SKODA PRAHA a.s. Thanks to this sponsorship we could also invite several participants and students at essentially reduced cost.

Download or read book A Relativistic Meson-exchange Model of Pion-nucleon Scattering written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pion-nucleon scattering is investigated using the Kadshevsky three-dimensional reduction of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. The resulting potential includes the direct and crossed N and [Delta] terms, and the t-channel [sigma]- and [rho]-exchange terms. The nucleon-pole condition is imposed to define the renormalization of the nucleon mass and the [pi]NN coupling constant. A mixture of the scalar and vector [sigma][pi][pi] couplings is introduced to simulate the broad width of the s-wave correlated two-pion exchange mechanism. Good descriptions of the [pi]N phase shifts up to 400 MeV have been obtained in all S- and P-waves. The off-shell behavior for our model differs significantly from that obtained using different reductions. A paper describing our results was published.
