Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study developed and evaluated a short-range ensemble forecasting (SREF) system with the goal of producing useful forecast probability (FP). Real- time, 0 to 48-h forecasts from four different SREF systems were compared for 129 forecast cases over the Pacific Northwest. Eight analyses from different operational forecast centers were used as initial conditions (ICs) for running the Fifth-Generation Pennsylvania State University-National Center of Atmospheric Research Mesoscale Model (MM5). Additional ICs were generated through linear combinations of the original 8 analyses, but this did not result in an increase in FP skill commensurate with the increase in ensemble size. It was also found that an ensemble made up of unequally likely members can be skillful as long as all members at least occasionally perform well. Model error is a large source of forecast uncertainty and must be accounted for to maximize SREF utility, particularly for mesoscale, sensible weather phenomena. Inclusion of model perturbations in a SREF increased dispersion toward statistical consistency, but low dispersion remained problematic. Additionally, model perturbations notably improved FP skill (both reliability and resolution), revealing the significant influence of model uncertainty. Systematic model errors (i.e., biases) should always be removed from a SREF since they are a large part of forecast error but do not contribute to forecast uncertainty. A grid-based, 2-week, running-mean bias correction was shown to improve FP skill through: 1) better reliability by adjusting the ensemble mean toward the verification's mean, and 2) better resolution by reducing unrealistic ensemble variance.

Book excerpt: Subsynoptic convective areas are isloated, monitored and forecast through extrapolation and advection using McIDAS, (Man-Computer Interactive Data Access System), and interactive computer video-display system. Research on isolating the convective areas focuses on development of statistics using digital visual and IR GOES satellite data to delineate areal coverage and intensity. McIDAS algorithms have been developed to: (1) compute the brightness centroid; (2) form a best-fit ellipse to the region; and (3) compute areal average IR and normalized-visual brightness. Sequences of brightness centers and geometric outlines serve as input extrapolation routines to project system movement and change in area coverage and intensity. Research also has been initiated on using vertically-integrated wind fields to advect meteorological fields and disturbances. Preliminary results using these techniques for short-range forecast are presented.

Book excerpt: Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) and solar flares are energetic events taking place at the Sun that can affect the space weather or the near-Earth environment by the release of vast quantities of electromagnetic radiation and charged particles. Solar active regions are the areas where most flares and CMEs originate. Studying the associations among sunspot groups, flares, filaments, and CMEs is helpful in understanding the possible cause and effect relationships between these events and features. Forecasting space weather in a timely manner is important for protecting technological systems and human life on earth and in space. The research presented in this thesis introduces novel, fully computerised, machine learning-based decision rules and models that can be used within a system design for automated space weather forecasting. The system design in this work consists of three stages: (1) designing computer tools to find the associations among sunspot groups, flares, filaments, and CMEs (2) applying machine learning algorithms to the associations' datasets and (3) studying the evolution patterns of sunspot groups using time-series methods. Machine learning algorithms are used to provide computerised learning rules and models that enable the system to provide automated prediction of CMEs, flares, and evolution patterns of sunspot groups. These numerical rules are extracted from the characteristics, associations, and time-series analysis of the available historical solar data. The training of machine learning algorithms is based on data sets created by investigating the associations among sunspots, filaments, flares, and CMEs. Evolution patterns of sunspot areas and McIntosh classifications are analysed using a statistical machine learning method, namely the Hidden Markov Model (HMM).
