Book excerpt: Capturing the essence of Hunter S. Thompson’s “Gonzo” style, short story Mescalito details his dark and miserably comic first mescaline drug trip. First published in Songs of the Doomed, Mescalito suggests the nascent ideas and energy of Thompson’s seminal work on the ‘60s experience, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. "We live in a jungle of pending disasters," the author warns. Alone in a hotel room in Los Angeles in February, 1969, Thompsons’ alter-ego Duke sustains a fever-pitched bout of paranoia so dark and depraved, it would make most mortals run fast―and far―from this kind of suicidal experimentation.

Book excerpt: Mescalito Riding His White Horse was inspired by several interviews conducted with Peter Rowan, legendary bluegrass musician, over a period of a few months during 2021. Peter never really followed the path of rock superstar - he was more interested in the alchemical process of music. In discovering this magic, I have felt myself projected across time, place, and identity and tried to put that experience into words. Except for the quoted interviews, which were transcribed as spoken, what follows is a combination of autobiography mixed with my visions and dreams. Some were imagined. All were real.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1978, Don Juan, Mescalito and Modern Magic begins with an analysis of the Castaneda material from the viewpoint of its inherently magical content. The author examines the symbiotic gestures, the magical actions and the mind-altering techniques employed by the brujo Don Juan, and then goes on to draw comparisons with two other schools of thought: the psychedelic development of the 1960s and the Western Magical Tradition. The essential aim throughout is to show that there is a basically Western shamanism which uses Western symbols and is easily accessible. The shamanistic practices of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn are examined in this context. Considerable emphasis is also placed on mythological aspects associated with out-of-the-body experiences and their relevance to both the Don Juan Mescalito imagery and the Qabalistic and Tarot symbols found in Western Magic. This book will be of interest to students of religion, history and literature.

Book excerpt: An almost unnaturally poignant love story from the father of “Gonzo” journalism and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Hunter S. Thompson. What makes the romantic short story Screwjack so touching, for all its queerness, is the aching melancholy in its depiction of the modern man's burden: that "we are doomed. Mama has gone off to Real Estate School...and after that maybe even to Law School. We will never see her again." Hunter S. Thompson’s most searing and unnaturally poignant love story, Screwjack is simultaneously eerie and feverish, debauched and affecting. Never before—and perhaps never since—has modern man’s melancholia been so vividly revealed in one powerful story.

Castaneda's now classic book remains controversial for the alternative way of seeing that it presents and the revolution in cognition it demands. Whether read as ethnographic fact or creative fiction, it is the story of a remarkable journey that has left an indelible impression on the life of more than a million readers around the world.

Book excerpt: The first part of the book takes place 1875-1925 in Texas. A man lost in the desert finds his "spirit animal", a deer that guides him to an oasis where he learns how to survive. His deer introduces him to the cactus, peyote. The man has renamed himself Adam, like a new man reborn. He has peyote infused visions that unknown to him predict his future and the future of his family. He leaves his oasis to find his place in the real world. He crosses the desert where he finds the woman of his visions. Her name is Eva. She is a Mexican laborers daughter. They marry and raise a family with all that entails, the good and the bad. Several of their children die in infancy while one becomes a famous border killer, others farmers and one a railroad man. The railroad minded son marries an Apache captive and they move to Ft. Worth where they establish the Texas family name of Bridgewater that survives to this day. Eva dies and Adam now alone returns to his desert oasis to live out the rest of his days. His last encounter on this earth is with a large, hungry bear. This ends Part 1 of the story. Part 2 of the story takes place between 1950-2015. The story applies the Ten Commandments of the Bible to lives of ordinary members of the Bridgewater family via eleven short stories. The reason that there are eleven instead of ten separate stories is that a member of the Bridgewater family, Herbert has without knowing it created an eleventh commandment as a guide for his family and any others that will listen.

Book excerpt: A definitive history of mescaline that explores its mind-altering effects across cultures, from ancient America to Western modernity Mescaline became a popular sensation in the mid-twentieth century through Aldous Huxley's The Doors of Perception, after which the word "psychedelic" was coined to describe it. Its story, however, extends deep into prehistory: the earliest Andean cultures depicted mescaline-containing cacti in their temples. Mescaline was isolated in 1897 from the peyote cactus, first encountered by Europeans during the Spanish conquest of Mexico. During the twentieth century it was used by psychologists investigating the secrets of consciousness, spiritual seekers from Aleister Crowley to the president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, artists exploring the creative process, and psychiatrists looking to cure schizophrenia. Meanwhile peyote played a vital role in preserving and shaping Native American identity. Drawing on botany, pharmacology, ethnography, and the mind sciences and examining the mescaline experiences of figures from William James to Walter Benjamin to Hunter S. Thompson, this is an enthralling narrative of mescaline's many lives.
