Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Stephenson’s Planet class locomotive was the first true design of mainline express passenger locomotive. Delivered less than a year after Rocket it was one of the most successful early locomotive designs. Planet set the mold for British locomotive design for more than the next century featuring a multi tubular boiler; inside cylinders; crank axle; and the first use of proper frames. The Planet class, and its 0-4-0 Samson derivative, found use across Britain with examples being supplied to railways in London and Glasgow. The Planet class proved popular in Europe too with examples being first exported and then built in France. Two were exported to Austria, and the first locomotive to steam in Russia was based on the design. Planet and Samson also crossed the Atlantic with more examples being built in the United States than in Europe. A working replica of the revolutionary design was built in Manchester in 1992: the first mainline express passenger steam locomotive to be built in Britain since the 1960s. This book outlines the technical design of the Planet and Samson locomotive, and charts the careers of the class members at home and abroad.
Book Synopsis The Coming of the Railway by : David Gwyn
Download or read book The Coming of the Railway written by David Gwyn and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first global history of the epic early days of the iron railway Railways, in simple wooden or stone form, have existed since prehistory. But from the 1750s onward the introduction of iron rails led to a dramatic technological evolution--one that would truly change the world. In this rich new history, David Gwyn tells the neglected story of the early iron railway from a global perspective. Driven by a combination of ruthless enterprise, brilliant experimenters, and international cooperation, railway construction began to expand across the world with astonishing rapidity. From Britain to Australia, Russia to America, railways would bind together cities, nations, and entire continents. Rail was a tool of industry and empire as well as, eventually, passenger transport, and developments in technology occurred at breakneck speed--even if the first locomotive in America could muster only 6 mph. The Coming of the Railway explores these fascinating developments, documenting the early railway's outsize social, political, and economic impact--carving out the shape of the global economy as we know it today.

Book excerpt: The structures discovered on the Brecon Forest Tramroads illustrate the beginnings of modern railway practice. This first detailed archaeological study of a railway illuminates parallels located elsewhere in Britain. Developments that were to be of world importance. Did iron railway bridges exist before George Stephenson? This book shows that such bridges were built in south Wales thirty years before the construction of Stephenson's Gaunless Viaduct on the Stockton and Darlington Railway and explains where to see these bridges today. Numerous stone viaducts, bridges and causeways were built over gorges. Monumental building detail existed years before the Euston Arch. Even the foundations of American Industrial might were laid here. Book excerpt: Slates from quarries in Wales once went to roof the world. By the late nineteenth century as many as a third of all the roofing slates produced worldwide came from Wales, competing with quarries in France and the United States. This book traces the industry from its origins in the Roman period, its slow medieval development and then its massive expansion in the nineteenth century – as well as through its long drawn-out decline in the twentieth.
Book Synopsis Moving Mountains by Rail by : Ian P. Peaty
Download or read book Moving Mountains by Rail written by Ian P. Peaty and published by History Press Limited. This book was released on 2006 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the story of the railways which served numerous stone quarry companies around the country. Over many years these companies developed into one of the world's largest international corporations, Hanson Aggregates." "The small firms that merged were stone extractive companies that had produced road setts, kerb stones and tarmacadam for road surfacing; railway track ballast and limestone were used in several industries, especially in iron and steel production. Many of these constituent quarries had their own rail systems, often utilising rope-worked inclines to gain access to mountain tops. A large number of locomotives and even horses hauled a variety of wagons over different gauges, and even today several small quarries dispatch some of the heaviest freight trains, hauled by the most powerful diesel locomotives." "Ian Peaty has collected archive and current material to form a complete history of the Hanson Aggregate Group. This researched history is illustrated by numerous maps, a wide range of photographs, and the author's own watercolour paintings. Moving Mountains by Rail provides a unique record for rail enthusiasts, modellers, and those interested in the aggregate industry and industrial history alike."--BOOK JACKET.
