Book excerpt: A failed North Polar expedition—dog sled teams are tough to find on short notice in Washington DC—and a Christmas model train display can change a life. Or maybe two lives. Anne Darlington’s little brother may be the President’s Chief of Staff, but that fails to give her life any direction—which it is sorely lacking. Being the daughter of one of the South’s leading families isn’t helping either. Vice President Zachary Thomas fights battles of his own. His disaffected path drives him to fight for the future. Once he meets Anne, he finally knows why. But if the climate change conference doesn’t finish him off, battling Anne’s heart definitely will. [Can be read stand-alone or in series. A complete happy-ever-after with no cliffhangers. Originally published in “The Night Stalkers White House” series in 2015. Re-edited 2022 but still the same great story.] Buy now and celebrate the Christmas holidays.

Book excerpt: The remarkable story of the seven African American soldiers ultimately awarded the World War II Medal of Honor, and the 50-year campaign to deny them their recognition. In 1945, when Congress began reviewing the record of the most conspicuous acts of courage by American soldiers during World War II, they recommended awarding the Medal of Honor to 432 recipients. Despite the fact that more than one million African-Americans served, not a single black soldier received the Medal of Honor. The omission remained on the record for over four decades. But recent historical investigations have brought to light some of the extraordinary acts of valor performed by black soldiers during the war. Men like Vernon Baker, who single-handedly eliminated three enemy machineguns, an observation post, and a German dugout. Or Sergeant Reuben Rivers, who spearhead his tank unit's advance against fierce German resistance for three days despite being grievously wounded. Meanwhile Lieutenant Charles Thomas led his platoon to capture a strategically vital village on the Siegfried Line in 1944 despite losing half his men and suffering a number of wounds himself. Ultimately, in 1993 a US Army commission determined that seven men, including Baker, Rivers and Thomas, had been denied the Army's highest award simply due to racial discrimination. In 1997, more than 50 years after the war, President Clinton finally awarded the Medal of Honor to these seven heroes, sadly all but one of them posthumously. These are their stories.

The pieces of the puzzle start to fall into place and Zachary finds that there are more parallels between Harding’s life and his own than he would have guessed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the 1940s, Zachary Scott (1914-1965) was the model for sophisticated, debonair villains in American film. His best-known roles include a mysterious criminal in The Mask of Dimitrios and the indolent husband in Mildred Pierce. He garnered further acclaim for his portrayal of villains in Her Kind of Man, Danger Signal, and South of St. Louis. Although he earned critical praise for his performance as a heroic tenant farmer in Jean Renoir's The Southerner, Scott never quite escaped typecasting. In Zachary Scott: Hollywood's Sophisticated Cad, Ronald L. Davis writes an appealing biography of the film star. Scott grew up in privileged circumstances—his father was a distinguished physician; his grandfather was a pioneer cattle baron—and was expected to follow his father into medical practice. Instead, Scott began to pursue a career in theater while studying at the University of Texas and subsequently worked his way on a ship to England to pursue acting. Upon his return to America, he began to look for work in New York. Excelling on stage and screen throughout the 1940s, Scott seemed destined for stardom. By the end of 1950, however, he had suffered through a turbulent divorce. A rafting accident left him badly shaken and clinically depressed. His frustration over his roles mounted, and he began to drink heavily. He remarried and spent the rest of his career concentrating on stage and television work. Although Scott continued to perform occasionally in films, he never reclaimed the level of stardom that he had in the mid-1940s. To reconstruct Scott's life, Davis uses interviews with Scott and colleagues and reviews, articles, and archival correspondence from the Scott papers at the University of Texas and from the Warner Brothers Archives. The result is a portrait of a talented actor who was rarely allowed to show his versatility on the screen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Strong Brotherhood in Blood is a highly historically based fiction novel, commencing with one rural, nineteenth century familys experiences before centrally focusing upon a tight-knit pack of adolescent classmates. Like many mid-nineteenth century Americans, Taylor, Zachary, and Austin Strong, believe that it will be a swift, thirty-day war, with glory, adventure, and personal prestige going solely to those who swiftly enlist. With an older brother attending West Point, the younger Strong boys are swept with patriotism and commence upon a plan to get their entire and largely underage band in on the adventure. A natural born leader and icon, Taylor Strong instinctively takes charge of the plan and succeeds in mustering in the entire pack of boyhood classmates. Zachary Strong quickly and romantically notifies the town sweetheart of his departure, but Rebeccas heart has been forever fixed on Taylor. Despite the warnings and cautions from their eldest and battle-tested brother, Adam, and the undoubted knowledge of close cousins in gray, Zachary and Taylor Strong are resolute to their scheme to fight against the Southern Rebellion. Through disparity, disease, privation, warfare, and unrest, the strength and endurance of human bonds are severely tested. A Strong Brotherhood in Blood is extensively researched and based upon numerous, primary documents written by the common men who were there, and is a timeless story of psychological change, evolution, survival, and the perseverance of the human spirit. A Strong Brotherhood in Blood is the first book in a series set, including both a sequel and an innovative Confederate crossover novel that will satisfy both the novice as well as the professional historian.
