Book excerpt: Merryweather USMC: is a story about two young men in 1833, living in South Carolina. One would become a United States Marine Corps General, the other an admiral in the United States Navy. This book describes in vivid detail what may have occurred in the United States Marine Corps between 1837 and 1867. The narration is by the Marine Corps General, born in Port Royal, South Carolina. He will serve in Florida during the Seminole Wars, Mexico, and finally the Civil War. He is wounded at Gettysburg and is awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. He is promoted to Commandant of the Marine Corps and he occupies the highest USMC office in Washington D.C. The historical events of 1937 through 1967, are carefully followed. The imagination of the author provides rich characters in powerful settings from the battlefields of Mexico to those in America The time old love story between a man and woman is woven throughout the book when the general meets the daughter of John Randolph Adams. The Adams are those from the time of the Mayflower, two US Presidents and statesmen of America. The general and Miss Adams are like oil and water. He can not stand her, and she is convinced that this is the man she will marry. Scenes are set carefully with attention to accurate research of the low country of South Carolina as well as our Nation's Capital circa 1837 - 1867. The People's Standard History of the United States written by Edward S. Ellis and published by Western Book Syndicate and copyrighted by the Woolfall Company have provided background materials, maps of the period and needed information on how the federal government was organized and functioned during this period of our history. Dear Readers, This is a story of Americas admirals and generals from 1833 to 1877. These were trying times in the history of our country. In 1822, a young man was accepted into the Carlisle Military College of South Carolina. Another was accepted into the United States Military Academy at West Point. One became an admiral, the other a general. One lived in Port Royal, South Carolina, where he worked on his father's shrimp boats. The other was born on a plantation south of Beaufort, South Carolina and sailed aboard his father's merchant ships, they were both in tune with the sea. So when the two institutions asked for their selection of military service, they choose the Navy. One became an admireal, the other a brigadier general in the United Staes Marine Corps. This is a work of fiction. Its location was inspired by my home which I leased on Dataw Island from 2003 through 2008. The next barrier island in the chain is called Pollowanna Island and if was chosen as the fictional setting for the Caldwell family plantation. To my knowledge, there was never a Cladwell living in Beaufort. The fictional account is based, in part, on the lives of the Barnwell and Bull families who lived during these times. They owned the homes described along Bay Street. And, yes, they did have a Vice Admiral in the family. The historical events which are outlined in this book all took place. The dates and locations are accurate, but the characters are the products of my overactice imagination. Some persons mentioned, however, are real. You can not write about this period of our history without making reference to commanding admirals or generals. Sincerely, Dan Ryan

Book excerpt: In this historical novel, a skilled Charleston surgeon in the Army of Northern Virginia questions everything he knows as truth when faced with the horrors of the Civil War. The Civil War inevitably approaches. Two young Charlestonians, the Irish Catholic Mary Assumpta Bailey, and the English Protestant James Merriweather are soon to be intertwined through marriage, medicine, and their aversion to slavery. Mary Assumpta Bailey, her brother, Dr. John Bailey, and his medical apprentice, Dr. James Merriweather, openly serve anyone who walks through the doors of their Charleston medical practice – white, free blacks, seamen, or slaves. Equally, and despite its flaws, they also share an abiding love for the South. Dr. James Merriweather feels an enduring duty to the young men dying in battle and to his young family weathering the War on their small farm on Horlbeck Creek, South Carolina. Merriweather joins the War confident in the knowledge he can use his surgical skills to save the injured and send them back to their families. Rather quickly, Merriweather realizes how unprepared he is for the horrors of battle. Thus he begins a slow journey into his own war with darkness–his sanity precariously in the balance.

Book excerpt: The Coretta Scott King Honor-winning author tells the moving story of the friendship between a young white boy and a Black WWII veteran who has recently returned to the unwelcoming Jim Crow South. For Gabriel Haberlin, life seems pretty close to perfect in the small southern town of Birdsong, USA. But on his twelfth birthday, his point of view begins to change. It all starts when he comes face-to-face with one of the worst drivers in town while riding his new bicycle--an accident that would have been tragic if Mr. Meriwether Hunter hadn't been around to push him out of harm's way. After the accident, Gabriel and Meriwether become friends when they both start working at Gabriel's dad's auto shop, and Meriwether lets a secret slip: He served in the army's all-black 761st Tank Battalion in World War II. Soon Gabriel learns why it's so dangerous for Meriwether to talk about his heroism in front of white people, and Gabriel's eyes are finally opened to the hard truth about Birdsong--and his understanding of what it means to be a hero will never be the same.
Book Synopsis Palm Beach, Mar-a-Lago, and the Rise of America's Xanadu by : Les Standiford

This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first Gilded Age to the second, a “charming, zippy history . . . a rollicking, informative lesson in real estate, American history, and current events.” —Town & Country Looking at the island of Palm Beach today, with its unmatched mansions, tony shops, and pristine beaches, one is hard pressed to visualize the dense tangle of Palmetto brush and mangroves that it was when visionary entrepreneur and railroad tycoon Henry Flagler first arrived there in April 1893. Trusting his remarkable instincts, he built the Royal Poinciana Hotel within a year, and two years later, what was to become the legendary Breakers—instantly establishing the island as the preferred destination for those who could afford it. Over the next 125 years, Palm Beach has become synonymous with exclusivity—especially its most famous residence, Mar-a-Lago. As Les Standiford relates, the high walls of Mar-a-Lago and other manses like it were seemingly designed to contain scandal within as much as keep intruders out. This book tells the history of this fabled landscape intertwined with the colorful lives of its famous and infamous protagonists, from Flagler’s two wives to architect Addison Mizner, who created Palm Beach’s “Mediterranean look” to heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband E. F. Hutton, the original residents of Mar-a-Lago. With authoritative detail, Standiford recounts how Marjorie ruled Palm Beach society until her death in 1973, and how the fate of her mansion threatened to tear apart the very fabric of the town until Donald Trump acquired it in 1985. “Edifying, energetic, and captivating.” —Florida Weekly
