Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alice, the author's mother, is mentioned frequently in this account of his book. A disciplinarian to no small degree, she did her best in the trying pre-war times of unemployment. A fair amount of the author's recollections concerns the ups and downs of life in the small Derbyshire town of Clowne in the thirties. The history and records of shops and ownership in Clowne might be said to be as meticulous as the records in the Doomsday book! But what makes this volume most valuable is the author's memories and insights into that ballerina of the skies, the Spitfire, the key player in the Battle of Britain. And who better qualified to sing these praises than a Spitfire pilot? For out of Clowne came Geoffrey Lewis, a living legend now in his eighties, one of our heroes who gives us first-hand information about his 'Spitty', apart from the absorbingly interesting account of his aircraft training in Prince Albert, in Canada, prior to engaging battle in Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new addition to the Images of War series is sure to prove welcome, illustrating as it does the preparatory stages of the iconic Battle of Britain. Whilst the country geared up for action, the air forces rallied, readying the high-performance Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire fighters that were to characterize this aerial conflict so dramatically. The nine month period that elapsed prior to the German dive-bombing attacks on British shipping in the English Channel (an event that signaled, what Winston Churchill labeled, The Battle of Britain) is the focus of this photographic study. The so-called 'Phoney War' that played out under the leadership of William Maxwell Aitken, the British Minister of Aircraft Production, saw all arms of the Air Force tasked with the job of ensuring that Britain and its forces were prepared for the German challenge that existed on the horizon.Images of some of pilots and various aircrews preparing for battle feature alongside shots of Spitfires in waiting, volunteer ambulance crews in readiness, civilians filling sandbags on the beaches of Britain to be used in an effort to protect its buildings. All these images serve to illustrate the times at hand, and the co-operative, resilient spirit of British pilots and civilians during this anticipatory period of uncertainty. Military enthusiasts and historians of the Second World War will be intrigued by the new insights opened up by these images. All are accompanied by Kaplan's illuminating prose, setting each image within context. A second volume will follow, focussing on the Battle itself, and The Few who achieved so much.

Book excerpt: During the summer of 1940, the skies over Great Britain are alive with snarling, twisting, darting fighters and bombers. The Battle of Britain is at its peak, and the Royal Air Force is struggling for its very existence. In the long-awaited sequel to Dragon Flight, Andy Duncan, a twenty-one-year-old Canadian airman and son of World War I ace Jimmy Duncan, is focused on piloting a Supermarine Spifire against the best that Nazi Germany can throw at the beleaguered English homeland. But when Duncan needs to hitch a van ride to the white cliffs where his squadron is stationed, the driver is Emily Smith-Barton, a buxom strawberry blonde corporal in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. Duncan is completely captivated by her loveliness and, as Emily enters his chaotic life, hopes of a brighter future dangle like a tantalizing carrot before him. But Duncan's dream of a more peaceful existence will only become reality if he and the fighter boys of the 689 Squadron can survive the brutal killing fields five miles above a patchwork countryside that has suddenly become more precious than gold.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume II of this mammoth reference work covers the years in which the League of Nations failed because of the emerging dictatorships in Germany and Italy and the expansionist policies adopted by Japan. Britain was still reeling from the consequences of World War I and the RAF was sadly far behind the other major world powers in aircraft design, still relying on bi-planes that were direct descendants of World War I thinking. It gradually became apparent that, despite UK government dithering, the RAF needed to develop new aircraft, engines and increase production to confront the bully-boy tactics of the Axis powers. As the turn of the decade approached extraordinary measures were taken to enable RAF to defend Britain's skies and this her freedom. As with Volume 1, this book covers every conceivable part of the RAF's history through these pre-War days. It looks at the development and invention of new equipment such as radar, monoplane fighters, metal construction and the heavy bomber. This was an era when science in aviation was rushing ahead and fortunately for Britain's freedom, it laid the foundations of victory in 1.945

Book excerpt: In The Breaking Storm, the first of Dilip Sarkar’s unprecedented seven-volume series exploring the Battle of Britain, the events that led up to the outbreak of war in 1939, and which set the scene for the epic aerial conflict of summer 1940, are fully explored. Continuing his examination of the events of the Spitfire Summer, in The Breaking Storm Dilip provides a day-by-day chronicle of the Battle of Britain’s first phase – the so-called Kanalkampf – which was fought over the Channel-bound convoys between 10 July and 12 August 1940. This account, though, does not simply concern RAF Fighter Command, as the author recognizes the operations and efforts of the RAF’s Bomber and Coastal commands, the Royal Navy and mercantile marine – making this book part of what he calls ‘the Big story’. Hitler’s actual policies and intentions towards the ongoing war with Britain are also explored. If the Battle of Britain was fought to deny Germany the aerial superiority required to launch a seaborne invasion of southern England, then, the author argues, the conflict could surely only have begun when the Germans committed to Operation Seelöwe – which was not, in fact, until 21 July 1940. It has previously been accepted that Hitler’s War Directive of 16 July 1940 signaled the intention to invade, but the author proves that this was no more than another example of the ‘brinkmanship’ that Hitler was renowned for, and the air attacks at that time little more than ‘Air Fleet Diplomacy’, all of which was intended to frighten Britain into accepting the Führer’s ‘last appeal to reason’ of 19 July 1940. In his broadcast of 22 July 1940, Lord Halifax made the nation’s unbowed position quite clear. He called Hitler’s bluff: previously reluctant to fight Britain, Hitler’s preferred policy in the ongoing war had been blockade and diplomacy – but now he had no choice but to unleash the Luftwaffe against Britain. All of this is investigated in detail, aligning these wider events and high decisions with action in the air. Through diligent research, combined with crucial official primary sources and personal papers, Dilip unravels many myths, often challenging the accepted narrative. This is not simply another dull record of combat losses and claims – far from it. Drawing upon unique first-hand accounts from a wide-range of combatants and eyewitnesses, along with Daily Home Intelligence Reports and numerous other primary sources, this book forms part of what is likely to be the first and last such comprehensively woven account of this epic air battle.
