Book excerpt: An in-depth understanding of the meridians and acupoints lies at the heart of effective practice in traditional Chinese medicine. This book outlines everything that practitioners and students need to know. The book explains how meridians relate to the major organs, where they are located in the body, and how they are linked to the healthy flow of Qi and blood. A large section of the book is devoted to descriptions of specific acupoints - their names, how to locate them, an introduction to the symptoms they can be used to treat, and how. Also included is a thorough introduction to the basics of acupuncture practice, including how to prepare a patient prior to treatment, how to insert and manipulate acupuncture needles, how and when to use moxibustion and cupping techniques, and what to do if treatment goes wrong. This useful and authoritative textbook, compiled by the China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Centre (CBIATC), under the editorial direction of leading Chinese clinicians Zhu Bing and Wang Hongcai, is essential reading for students of traditional Chinese medicine, and an excellent reference for acupuncture practitioners at all levels.

Book excerpt: “A classic novel of both feminism and the Civil Rights movement” in 1960s Atlanta by the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Color Purple (Ms.). As she approaches the end of her teen years, Meridian Hill has already married, divorced, and given birth to a son. She’s looking for a second chance, and at a small college outside Atlanta, Georgia, in the early 1960s, Meridian discovers the civil rights movement. So fully does the cause guide her life that she’s willing to sacrifice virtually anything to help transform the conditions of a people whose subjugation she shares. Meridian draws from Walker’s own experiences working alongside some of the heroes of the civil rights movement, and the novel stands as a shrewd and affecting document of the dissolution of the Jim Crow South. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Alice Walker including rare photos from the author’s personal collection.

Book excerpt: If you enjoy books by Brene’ Brown, Adam Grant, and James Clear, you will love this book. If you have been searching for a leadership training or coaching guide that fits your unique situation, look no further. In Crossing Meridians: Engineering Disruption to Become a More Effective Leader, the author shares her tested approach to leadership enrichment and provides a workbook to help leaders plan and own their development journey. The author thoughtfully shows aspiring to mid-career leaders how to own their career success, moving from their familiar ways of working and thinking to heightened leadership. With her Crossing Meridians approach, which is both a mindset and a method, the author provides the framework for a deeply personal, step-by-step approach to leadership development that guides leaders through learning cycles. Whether you are a new manager or a leader who needs to sharpen your leadership skills, Crossing Meridians can help you. In the book, leaders are encouraged to engineer their own disruption—taking on uncomfortable, more complex development actions that allow them to cross divides while gaining the essential leadership capabilities of empathy, openness, and resiliency. Leaders are shown how to define their Beginning Meridians, those early, pervasive influences that shape us. And they are shown how to envision their larger leadership and target, select, and execute development actions that move them from their Beginning Meridians to their New Meridians. The author also draws the connection between the Crossing Meridians leadership development method and today’s real world challenges. She makes the case that organizations today are presented with a myriad of pressing issues, like social and racial justice, that they cannot ignore. With increased expectations and scrutiny from customers, employees, communities, and partners, organizations have made significant promises that require strong leadership to deliver on those promises. The author shows how leaders that have crossed meridians are invaluable to these organizations because of their heightened leadership agility and insights borne of learning through disruption and discomfort. To help readers plan their leadership development, the author has included a workbook. It is where leaders can assess, distill, reimagine, plan, act, and repeat on their journey to becoming more effective leaders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space and time on earth are regulated by the prime meridian, 0°, which is, by convention, based at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. But the meridian’s location in southeast London is not a simple legacy of Britain’s imperial past. Before the nineteenth century, more than twenty-five different prime meridians were in use around the world, including Paris, Beijing, Greenwich, Washington, and the location traditional in Europe since Ptolemy, the Canary Islands. Charles Withers explains how the choice of Greenwich to mark 0° longitude solved complex problems of global measurement that had engaged geographers, astronomers, and mariners since ancient times. Withers guides readers through the navigation and astronomy associated with diverse meridians and explains the problems that these cartographic lines both solved and created. He shows that as science and commerce became more global and as railway and telegraph networks tied the world closer together, the multiplicity of prime meridians led to ever greater confusion in the coordination of time and the geographical division of space. After a series of international scientific meetings, notably the 1884 International Meridian Conference in Washington, DC, Greenwich emerged as the most pragmatic choice for a global prime meridian, though not unanimously or without acrimony. Even after 1884, other prime meridians remained in use for decades. As Zero Degrees shows, geographies of the prime meridian are a testament to the power of maps, the challenges of accurate measurement on a global scale, and the role of scientific authority in creating the modern world.

Book excerpt: With thousands of years history and your own experience in using or benefiting from meridian-based medical practices, you many not feel that you need physical proof of the existence of meridian lines and points. However, it is the lack of visual proof that has kept the Western health community, including the insurance companies, from fully accepting the practices of the East like acupuncture and acupressure. Those who understand meridian theory know that it is not just the ability to help heal that is important in Eastern practice, but the focus on health maintenance through maintaining the flow of energy throughout the body. There are many people trying to establish the proof of meridian theory and this book contributes to this goal by presenting a sample of the work of Dr. Shui Yin Lo, who uses infrared photography in his research and has discovered its ability to reveal easily the 14 major meridians in Eastern meridian theory. We all know that we need a more efficient and cost effect approach to medical care and this book will provide a major steppingstone towards that goal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the recent times, there occured a tremendous phenomenon in the field of Science. It is the growing awareness of the importance of Oriental Medicine, notably the so called acupuncture, in America, Europe and countries all over the world. Acupunture, as a field of medicine, poses a fundametal problem. It embraces a lot of complexities which must first have a through knowledge of meridians and acupuncutre points. Moreover, there is a need for them to have a complete understanding of all the acupunture parts in the human body. These can not bo acquired, however, in just a day's time. Like any other field of specialization, it demands a continuous practice of learning and relearing. In this connection, I am publing a book which will serve as a guide for medical students and doctors pursuing further studies in acupunture. The entitle "Acupunture Meridiana and Acupuncture Points" possesses distinct characteristies for easy reading and understanding. "Acupunture Meridians and Acupunture Points" indicates the exact position of these points. They are located in various parts of the human body; namely, bone surfaces, muscles, blood vessels and nerves. To aid readers in understanding better these points, the authors intentionally uses meridian classification, point's names and symptoms Korean and Chinese characters are also used for more depth. The findings presented in this study, however, should not be deemed by readers as conclusive and absolute. Liky and study, it assumes fallibility. In consonance to this, the author seek your advice by writing to them so that a revision may be undertaken. The author, I present any contribution it can be given to the people of today will be my honer and pressure. I like to express my thanks to wife JiHye, daughter Sandy, son Alex, and all family folks for helps and support.
