Book excerpt: The 1915 Western Electric Employee Picnic is the social highlight of the year in Cicero, Illinois. Five steamers wait to ferry seven thousand passengers to the picnic grounds in Michigan City, Indiana. As teenager Dee Pageau packs her picnic basket and prepares to board the SS Eastland, she anticipates this will be the best day of her life. Dee hopes to spend time with her best friend, Mae Koznecki-but she also wants to get to know Mae's handsome brother, Karel, a little better. Dee has no idea that in a matter of hours, tragedy will strike. Despite her mother's dark premonition that death awaits her if she boards the SS Eastland, Dee decides the risk is worth a chance for more time with Karel. Dee's excitement quickly turns to terror, though, when the ship capsizes at the dock, threatening the lives of everyone on board. Rescued from certain death-not once, but twice-by Karel and a mysterious stranger, Dee soon discovers that Mae is nowhere to be found. Dee can only sit back and wait to hear if she is trapped in the flooding bowels of the capsized ship or worse yet, dead. In this captivating historical tale, Dee takes a coming-of-age journey like no other as she soon realizes that surviving the disaster is only the beginning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twelve-year-old Cassie has a lot to cope with when her father moves "out of the picture." Her mom's constantly working overtime, her teenage sister's going AWOL, and her little brother seriously needs attention. It's up to Cassie to prevent total chaos at home -- or so she thinks. She can't control everything, though. At school Cassie's two "best" friends are turning nasty, and a cute boy is sending mixed signals. And then there's Mr. Mullaney -- the weirdest, hardest English teacher in the seventh grade -- who hates everything she does. Since Mr. Mullaney isn't even reading her brilliant work, Cassie starts submitting journal entries like "A Virtual Tour of My Insanely Messy Desk." But her sassy humor isn't winning her any friends or helping her ailing grades. What's a girl to do when life gets totally insane? Barbara Dee has created a witty, poignant portrait of an intense, honest, feisty girl who is ferociously funny and only too human.

Book Synopsis Hey Ho Let's Go: The Story of the Ramones by : Everett True
Download or read book Hey Ho Let's Go: The Story of the Ramones written by Everett True and published by Omnibus Press. This book was released on 2010-05-16 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ramones cut an unforgettable swathe through decades of popular music. With politically charged anger, raw sounds and ferocious 20 minute sets they undercut the glamour of the mainstream music industry and gave the punk movement an authentic voice – A voice which can still be heard echoing through the decades. Seen through the eyes of the people who were there - musicians, managers, producers, publicists - this insightful biography depicts the Ramones rebellion against the establishment, how they forged their unique voice against the pressures of censure and managed to stay honest until the bitter end. Updated to reflect the sad death of guitarist Johnny Ramone, this is the essential story of the punk scene’s most durable and influential band.

Book excerpt: I like to joke how this is sort of two novels which kinda got merged. This occurred whenever inflicted with “burn out” during those heavy days I pounded on the computer keyboard writing, Three Cheers for Father Donovan. For anyone who’s never done it, let me attest as to how the necessary research and the required language translations extract a costly toll. {Latin is the official language of the Holy See. Yes, some Vatican documents are translated into English, but many are not.} Thus, it is agony to enjoy the ecstasy for me to say, “J.D., you did good job.” And it happens only when it’s over... It never fails. I always embark on writing one of these grandiose, epic historical novels completely cognizant of the scope, but utterly ignorant of the scale. Such was the case writing The Bolsheviks...Three Cheers for Father Donovan...The Black Madonna to some degree. It is a one to four year odyssey in which I will ask myself many times, “J.D., is this really worth it?” It must be. I always persevere until completion. However, in search of a diversion, I would—from time to time—seek escape by prattling about the exploits of the Rearchek, Langer, Machado, and Benelli families. Nothing much. Twenty pages here. Thirty pages there. In the end, I found myself with a lore of exactly two hundred pages when it came time to submit my manuscript, Three Cheers for Father Donovan, to the publisher. Then came, The Pontchartrain Connection. I never experience a need for any “down time” when I wrote that novel. For some reason, with that novel, I was in a state of perpetual “writer’s groove” from start to finish. {Writer’s groove is what I call that weird clarity of knowing full well beforehand as to where this is all going and how my characters will get there.} Once again, after handing my publisher the manuscript for, The Pontchartrain Connection, I did find myself examining those two hundred pages and saying, “J.D., let’s finish it.” So I did. Hence, everything from the point when Sherrie and Sheba fall in love onward constitutes the new novel. Everything prior to that is the old. As my copy-editor, Mandy, told me after a review of my old script, “Gee, J.D., why all the sex?” Answer: “I was toying around when I wrote it.” So, why in the hell am I boring my readers to death with this whining confession as to why I wrote what amounts to a trashy potboiler? Well folks, the answer to that is two-fold: One, it makes for a fun read. Two, another epic is in the works. Yes, it’s about to happen all over again. I am now toiling with my attempt to mate Mary Shelly’s novel, Frankenstein, with Dale Brown’s novel, The Da Vinci Code. The outcome will be something I call, The Maltese Messiah. Now, there is some good news: I have in the works not one, but two novels to fall back on should I need a break...The sequel to this novel, The Unholy Family, and the follow-on novel, The Run for the Roses... May the God of Our Fathers be with me!
Download or read book Marky Ramone written by Marky Ramone and published by Bonnier Zaffre. This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE FINAL WORD ON THE GENIUS AND MISCHIEF OF THE RAMONES, TOLD BY THE MAN WHO KEPT THE BEAT - AND LIVED TO TELL ABOUT IT. When punk rock reared its spiky head in the early seventies, Marc Bell had the best seat in the house. Already a young veteran of the prototype American metal band Dust, Bell took residence in artistic, seedy Lower Manhattan, where he played drums in bands that would shape rock music for decades to come, including Wayne County, who pioneered transsexual rock, and Richard Hell and the Voidoids, who directly inspired the entire early British punk scene. If punk has royalty, Marc became part of it in 1978 when he was anointed 'Marky Ramone' by Johnny, Joey, and Dee Dee of the iconoclastic Ramones. The band of tough misfits were a natural fit for Marky, who dressed punk before there was punk, and who brought with him his 'blitzkrieg' style of drumming, as well as the studio and stage experience the group needed to solidify its line-up. Together, they would change the world. But Marky Ramone changed, too. The epic wear and tear of a dysfunctional group endlessly crisscrossing the country and the planet in a van - practically a psychiatric ward on wheels - drove Marky from partying to alcoholism. When his life started to look more out of control than Dee Dee's, he knew he had a problem. Marky left music in the mid-eighties to enter recovery and returned to help the Ramones finally receive their due as one of the greatest and most influential bands of all time. From the cult film Rock 'n' Roll High School to 'I Wanna Be Sedated' to Marky's own struggles, Punk Rock Blitzkrieg is an authentic, unflinching, and always honest look at the people who reinvented rock music. And not a moment too soon.

As Dr. B. Janet Hibbs explains, the key to solving most relationship problems-whether relating to money, children, chores, sex, or in-laws-is through a shared sense of fairness. Intuitively, we think we know what's "fair." But as this book reveals, the way we each understand fairness is much more complex, and is powerfully shaped by our family expectations and experiences. Dr. Hibbs provides readers with a road map for recognizing imbalances and building a stronger, more loving relationship based on a new kind of fairness.
