Book excerpt: GARCIN. And what use do you suppose I have for one? Do you know who I was? ... Oh, well, it's no great matter. And, to tell the truth, I had quite a habit o& living among furniture that I didn't relish, and in false positions. I'd even come to like it. A false position in a Louis Philippe dining room you know the style? well, that had its points, you know. Bogus in bogus, so to speak. VALET. And you'll find that living in a Second Empire drawing room has its points. GARCIN. Real y? ... Yes, yes, I dare say ... (He takes another look around) Still, I certainly didn't expect this! You know what they tell us down there? VALET. What about? GARCIN. About (makes a sweeping gesture) this residence. VALET. Real y, sir, how could you believe such cock and bull stories? Told by people who'd never set foot here. For, of course, if they had GARCIN. Quite so. (Both laugh. Abruptly the laugh dies from Garcin's face) But, I say, where are the instruments of torture?
Download or read book Fell written by M.E. Kerr and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Fell loves his family and gourmet cooking, and feels appropriately tormented by Keats, his rich girlfriend from the right side of the tracks. A normal life - normal, that is, until he meets Woodrow Pingree one night by ramming into the back of his Mitsubishi. Suddenly nothing will be the same. A poor boy is now a rich one at an exclusive prep school. A woman who's no longer a girl enters Fell's life with long kisses and no promises. He's paid to be someone he's not with a name that's no longer his own. ''Your fate is already set; just lean into it,'' Fell is told. Only don't fall, Fell... don't fall. Fell is a love story and a suspense story - the first in a series by M.E. Kerr. A strange incident on the night of the senior prom changes John Fell's entire life, leading him to enroll in an exclusive private school under an assumed name.

Book Synopsis The Metaphysics of Knowledge by : Keith Hossack
Download or read book The Metaphysics of Knowledge written by Keith Hossack and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-09-20 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Metaphysics of Knowledge presents the thesis that knowledge is an absolutely fundamental relation, with an indispensable role to play in metaphysics, philosophical logic, and philosophy of mind and language. Knowledge has been generally assumed to be a propositional attitude like belief. But Keith Hossack argues that knowledge is not a relation to a content; rather, it a relation to a fact. This point of view allows us to explain many of the concepts of philosophical logic in terms of knowledge. Hossack provides a theory of facts as structured combinations of particulars and universals, and presents a theory of content as the property of a mental act that determines its value for getting knowledge. He also defends a theory of representation in which the conceptual structure of a content is taken to picture the fact it represents. This permits definitions to be given of reference, truth, and necessity in terms of knowledge. Turning to the metaphysics of mind and language, Hossack argues that a conscious state is one that is identical with knowledge of its own occurrence. This allows us to characterise subjectivity, and, by illuminating the 'I'-concept, allows us to gain a better understanding of the concept of a person. Language is then explained in terms of knowledge, as a device used by a community of persons for exchanging knowledge by testimony. The Metaphysics of Knowledge concludes that knowledge is too fundamental to be constituted by something else, such as one's functional or physical state; other things may cause knowledge, but do not constitute it.

Book Synopsis Born Evil Or Born Genius by : Barry Sudiker
Download or read book Born Evil Or Born Genius written by Barry Sudiker and published by SP Books. This book was released on 2002-11 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating study of behaviour and its consequences, this work will make a huge impact in our thinking about crime and how to prevent it. In this controversial and shocking book, Barry Sudiker proves, through research and statistics, that both genius and criminality are inherited. He maintains that heredity plays a role in everything from I.Q. and eye colour to morals and the propensity for evil. Even more stunning are the authors case studies and examples that support his theories. In the classic nature vs. nurture debate, Sudiker insists that environment accounts for only three percent of ones behaviour. Genetics and predispositions account for the rest, which are passed down from the parents and grandparents. The author delves into controversial topics as Eugenics, starting: "Genetics, by shaping a human beings characteristics, determines everything from intelligence to the propensity to commit murder. The criminal element of society therefore is effected by genetics, and if this can be harnessed, genetics can be used to reduce crime in the world and help advance and improve humankind"
