Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States was embroiled in the American Civil War. Every city, large or small town, and all of the rural areas throughout America of the time were affected. Much of the male population was involved in this struggle--either directly or indirectly. The ladies were also highly involved. This is the story of an area of Western Pennsylvania--Mercer County, halfway between Pittsburgh and Erie--and the people who served in that war. A significant portion of the population went to the service. These men and women played a significant role in the Union winning that struggle (there were also Confederates from this area involved). This part of the country may seem like it was far away from the situations that caused this war, but we were right along the paths that led to war. This area was populated by people whose parents or grandparents fought in the Revolutionary War. They were very patriotic and saw the Constitution as a contract that the South could not just walk away from--it bound the States together forever (the South viewed the Constitution as a compact--a gentleman's agreement (a hand shake agreement) that as long as it served both parties they would work together, but it had failed). The young men were probably excited to go on a quest--an adventure--most had never been farther from their homes than fifty miles. Many of the citizens of Mercer County were drawn to the abolitionist movement. There were parts of the Underground Railroad that ran through the county. There was a runaway slave community near the present town of Sandy Lake and a freed slave community at Indian Run. Mercer Borough was less than sixty miles from two slave markets in Virginia (present day West Virginia). The soldiers from this small community fought in almost every battle-large and small-during those four rugged years. Here is their story in their own words-mostly. This book is the story of the American Civil War from the perspective of a small town and of small town boys. It is in depth and striking. You come to know those boys and men from at least one hundred fifty-four years ago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pennsylvania border county of York and its people stood smack in the middle of things - where South met North - in the American Civil War. That war roiled York County from its tip near the capital of Harrisburg to its 40-mile base at the Mason-Dixon Line. Union soldiers moved to the South after seasoning and staging on county soil. Train cars dripping with blood carried many wounded and diseased soldiers back to a mammoth U.S. military hospital on York parkland. Thousands of York County residents donned blue uniforms, and untold scores died. The war marched onto county soil in those terrible days before the Battle of Gettysburg. The four-day Confederate visit drained money, food, supplies, and horseflesh. Soldiers in blue and gray died in fighting at Hanover and Wrightsville. Gettysburg came next, and county residents gathered food and supplies to treat the wounds of battle, a short 30 miles away. Authors Scott MIngus and Jim McClure present more than 300 different stories of York during the war, including soldiers' memoirs, newspaper accounts, civilian letters and diaries, and other primary sources.

Book excerpt: Originating almost a quarter of a century prior to the Civil War, Mercer County, West Virginia was named for General Hugh Mercer, a Revolutionary War hero. The county has been a crossroads for many events, including the Civil War and the establishment of an industrial economy after the war ended. When two mighty railroads, the Norfolk & Western and The Virginian, began shipping coal and timber to the once-agrarian area, Mercer County blossomed into one of the five most highly populated counties of the Mountain State. In 1671, colonial explorer Robert Fallam described what would become Mercer County in his journal as "a pleasing tho' dreadful sight to see the mountains and hills as if piled one upon another." Despite extreme challenges, residents of Mercer County developed a spirit of pride, independence, strength, and genuine fellowship that today makes the region a warm and friendly place to call home. As legend holds, even the notorious outlaw Frank James was so overwhelmed by the hospitality he received in Mercer County in 1882 that he decided to pass on robbing the Bank of Princeton and, instead, robbed a bank in a neighboring county.

Book excerpt: Southern Revenge is the Civil War history of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, the only Northern town burned by the Confederates. This unique story is told appropriately through not only modern scholarship, but also through rare photographs, diary accounts, and period newspaper articles which let the victims speak for themselves.Chambersburg, a quiet farming community near the Maryland border, was truly the crossroads of destiny. The home of the Cumberland Valley Railroad, that progressive community had much to offer the war effort. To give but one example, the railroad system provided a much needed supply route that could be used by either army.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the first shots of the Civil War were fired, nearly one-third of Germantown's sons and daughters answered the call to duty. Generals and soldiers, doctors and nurses all fought to preserve the Union. Many were lost, but some returned home to carry on the memory of their fallen comrades through the efforts of the Grand Army of the Republic. The Philadelphia neighborhood was itself transformed when the town hall became Cuyler Hospital and local nurses like Catherine Keyser and Hannah Zell cared for the wounded of Gettysburg and other battles. In this intimate and sharply focused account, local historian Eugene Glenn Stackhouse commemorates the sacrifices of Germantown's proud citizenry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “balanced, compelling” study of one rural region in the North where war resistance flourished (Civil War Times). During the Civil War, there were explosions of resistance to the war throughout the Union—from the deadly draft riots in New York City to other, less well-known outbreaks. In Deserter Country, Robert M. Sandow explores one of these least known “inner civil wars”: the widespread, sometimes violent opposition in the Appalachian lumber country of Pennsylvania. Sparsely settled, these mountains were home to divided communities that provided a safe haven for opponents of the war. The dissent of mountain folk reflected their own marginality in the face of rapidly increasing exploitation of timber resources by big firms, as well as partisan debates over loyalty. One of the few studies of the northern Appalachians, this book draws revealing parallels to the War in the southern mountains, exploring the roots of rural protest in frontier development, the market economy, military policy, partisan debate, and everyday resistance. Sandow also sheds new light on the party politics of rural resistance, rejecting easy depictions of war-opponents as traitors and malcontents for a more nuanced and complicated study of class, economic upheaval, and localism.

Join author Jennifer Rogers as she recounts the lesser-known history of Bucks County. Industrial power in the region expanded in the late 1700s as Irish laborers sacrificed life and limb to construct a section of the Pennsylvania Canal and the Durham Furnace. In 1921, a gruesome train wreck claimed the lives of twenty-seven people, forever leaving its tragic mark on the busy rail lines emerging from Philadelphia. Raised a Quaker in Doylestown, James A. Michener went from local English teacher to Pulitzer Prize-winning author, leaving his philanthropic mark at the art museum named for him.
