This book was released on 2015-03-27 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1990s providing mental health services to the elderly and particularly to elderly Native Americans had been an issue of some concern for the last several decades. Despite this, many public decisions made at the time were based on inadequate data. Due to this lack of data, there had been little research devoted to determining the factors associated with mental health among elderly Native Americans. Instead, the growing body of mental health research had "been based on limited samples, primarily of middle-majority Anglos." Originally published in 1994, the purpose of this research was to utilize existing data to close the gap in our understanding of mental health among elderly Native Americans.
Book Synopsis Creating Infrastructures for Latino Mental Health by : Lydia P. Buki
Download or read book Creating Infrastructures for Latino Mental Health written by Lydia P. Buki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latinos are the fastest growing and largest minority group in the United States. In 2008, this group numbered over 47 million; by 2050, the population is expected to triple, reaching 133 million. Traditionally, Latinos have immigrated to large urban centers (e.g., New York, Los Angeles) that over long periods of time developed a complex infrastructure to receive new immigrants. Increasingly, new Spanish-speaking immigrants are moving into areas of the country previously unfamiliar to them. Although urban co-ethnic communities continue to be the destination of many newcomers, immigrants from Mexico, Central America, and South America in pursuit of low-skilled labor opportunities are settling in small towns and rural areas of the South and Midwest. This new demographic trend has resulted in the creation of the term "new growth communities," which refers to small rural areas that are now home to a small but rapidly growing Hispanic population. Unfortunately, these communities, which are now present in many states across the country (e.g., Illinois, North Carolina), lack the infrastructure necessary to meet the needs of Latino immigrants (e.g., access to health care, immigration assistance, and breaking down language barriers). The lack of an infrastructure and the lack of an established ethnic community to facilitate the assimilation of new immigrants present an ongoing challenge, especially in the area of Latino mental health. The volume focuses on dealing with systemic issues and on providing innovative ideas for development of infrastructure of services. This text will advance ways to understand and ameliorate mental health disparities both from research and experiential perspectives.
Book Synopsis Hispanic Aged Mental Health by : Terry L. Brink
Download or read book Hispanic Aged Mental Health written by Terry L. Brink and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1992 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hispanic Aged Mental Health describes the influence of cultural factors on the aging process of elderly Hispanic persons in the United States. Emphasizing a clinically relevant presentation of mental health issues in this population, it focuses on incidence and assessment of dementia and depression and describes various forms of intervention that may be used. This unique book helps clinicians better understand and work with Hispanic elderly and their families. Chapters cover a wide range of topics within the subject to give a broad view of the problems often faced by elderly Hispanic people. Topics addressed include life satisfaction, ethnocultural themes in caregiving, acculturation and depression of Hispanics in the U.S., alcoholism, self-reliant behavior, treating the sequelae of a curse, and barriers to health care access. Several psychometric scales in Spanish translation are included to help facilitate treatment of Spanish speaking clients. Psychologists, psychiatrists, gerontologists, social workers, counselors, and all people who work with elderly Hispanic people will find Hispanic Aged Mental Health an invaluable guide in their daily practice.
