Book Synopsis Lay Theology in the Reformation by : Paul A. Russell
Download or read book Lay Theology in the Reformation written by Paul A. Russell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-20 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the coming of the Protestant Reformation from the viewpoint of eight common people, who were sufficiently disturbed by the events of 1521-5 to write treatises, letters, dialogues, and sermons, which they published. Their works are lively testimony to the interest of laypeople in the affairs of the church, and their willingness to discuss often complex theological training. These works are among the first documents of lay theology and piety, but they are also propaganda: disappointed with the Catholic clergy and with secular authorities, the authors of these pamphlets were called to prophesy, preach, and convert their readers/listeners lest Christ return soon to find his church unprepared. They demanded a new apostolate for laypeople, something the clergy had feared for centuries and something which civic authorities feared as a potential source of radical ideas.

Book Synopsis Jews in German Literature since 1945 by :
Download or read book Jews in German Literature since 1945 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains some 46 essays on various aspects of contemporary German-Jewish literature. The approaches are diverse, reflecting the international origins of the contributors, who are based in seventeen different countries. Holocaust literature is just one theme in this context; others are memory, identity, Christian-Jewish relations, anti-Zionism, la belle juive, and more. Prose, poetry and drama are all represented, and there is a major debate on the controversial attempt to stage Fassbinder’s Der Müll, die Stadt und der Tod in 1985. The overall approach of the volume is an inclusive one. In his introduction, the editor calls for a reappraisal of the terms of German-Jewish discourse away from the notion of ‘Germans’ and ‘Jews’ and towards the idea that both Jews and non-Jews, all of them Germans, have contributed to the corpus of ‘German-Jewish literature’.

Book Synopsis The German People and the Reformation by : R. Po-chia Hsia
Download or read book The German People and the Reformation written by R. Po-chia Hsia and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the past, scholars tended to treat the Reformation as a chapter in the history of ideas, emphasizing the thought of the major reformers and the changes in Christian doctrine. Today, however, more and more historians are asking how the revolution in theology affected the lives of ordinary men and women. Aware that religious faith is part of the larger cultural and material universe of early modern Europeans, these scholars have exploited hitherto neglected sources in an attempt to reconstruct the people's Reformation. The twelve essays commissioned for this collection represent the broad spectrum of recent scholarship in the social history of the German Reformation. Historians from various countries offer a panorama of different methodological approaches and thematic concerns. Some of the essays represent original research; others address current historiographical debates; still others offer concise syntheses of recently published monographs, including seminal works in German. The essays are centered around four themes: cities and the Reformation; the transmitting of the Reformation in print, ritual and song; women and the family; and lastly, the impact of the Reformation on education and other aspects of lay culture." -- Back cover.
