Book excerpt: This international encyclopedia documents and surveys, for the first time, the entire complex of translation as well as the operations and phenomena associated with it. Structured along systematic, historical and geographic lines, it offers a comprehensive and critical account of the current state of knowledge and of international research. The Encyclopedia (1) offers an overview of the different types and branches of translation studies; (2) covers translation phenomena - including the entire range of interlingual, intralingual, and intersemiotic transfer and transformation - in their social, material, linguistic, intellectual, and cultural diversity from diachronic, synchronic, and systematic perspectives, (3) documents and elucidates the most important results of the study of translation to the present day, as well as the current debates, taking into account theoretical assumptions and methodological implications; (4) identifies, where possible, lacunae in existing research, listing priorities and desiderata for further research. The languages of publication are German, English, and French

Book excerpt: This book is a practical guide to using artificial intelligence with motivated employees in companies and organizations. You will learn what the prerequisites are for people to look forward to productive collaboration with "intelligent machines". Because this is the only way to leverage the full potential of AI. To this end, you will receive an overview of how and where AI can be used in companies and how to identify the right areas of application for AI in your company. The main issue here is the following: which tasks will be taken over by AI in the future and which should continue to be performed by employees. These decisions change processes and tasks and require practical change management and motivation. In this book, you will learn how to motivate and inspire people for these new tasks, so that the steps towards using AI in the work environment can succeed in the best possible way. About the Author: Prof. Dr. Andreas Moring is Professor of Digital Business, Innovation & AI at the International School of Management. He is founder and director of the JuS.TECH Institute for AI and Sustainability, co-founder of the WeGoFive initiative for productive human-AI cooperation and topic sponsor for human-AI cooperation at the Artificial Intelligence Center ARIC in Hamburg. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition KI im Job by Andreas Moring, published by Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2021. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.

Book excerpt: The interrelations between objects and organisms take many forms, from the microbes known to inhabit medieval manuscripts to the biomorphic forms observable in Art Nouveau lamps, and from the androids cast in American superhero comics to the coral found on Chinese porcelain recovered from shipwrecks. The contributions to this volume investigate various interactions between inanimate and animate matter in art, literature, technology, and other areas of human perception and expression. The book highlights how certain characteristics allow objects to be understood as living organisms, and vice versa. Via a range of dynamics involving vivification and reification, objects and organisms emerge as unstable, transforming within evolving situations. Innovative, interdisciplinary object-scientific contribution to critical ecology From the early modern period into the 21st century

Book excerpt: Taking human factors into account, a visual servoing approach aims to facilitate robots with real-time situational information to accomplish tasks in direct and proximate collaboration with people. A hybrid visual servoing algorithm, a combination of the classical position-based and image-based visual servoing, is applied to the whole task space. A model-based tracker monitors the human activities, via matching the human skeleton representation and the image of people in image. Grasping algorithms are implemented to compute grasp points based on the geometrical model of the robot gripper. Whilst major challenges of human-robot interactive object transfer are visual occlusions and making grasping plans, this work proposes a new method of visually guiding a robot with the presence of partial visual occlusion, and elaborate the solution to adaptive robotic grasping.

Book excerpt: A penetrating guide to artificial intelligence: what it is, what it does, and how it will change our lives At a breathtaking pace, artificial intelligence is getting better and faster at making complex decisions. AI can already identify malignant tumors on CT scans, give legal advice, out-bluff the best poker players in the world, and, with ever-increasing skill, drive our cars. In Who’s Afraid of AI?, award-winning author Thomas Ramge expertly explains how machines are learning to learn, and he questions what today’s explosion of AI capability could mean for tomorrow: Is it ethical to allow robots—endlessly patient—to replace human caregivers in providing comfort and companionship to the elderly? Since AI feeds on big data, can we prevent its misuse by corporations or the government? Will AI ever be capable of runaway self-improvement? And if “the singularity” does arrive, with AI’s intelligence exponentially outpacing our own, what will become of us when, in many ways, we’re obsolete?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If we read Ludwig Wittgenstein’s works and take his scientific formation in mathematical logic into account, it comes as a surprise that he ever developed a particular interest in anthropological questions. The following questions immediately arise: What role does anthropology play in Wittgenstein’s work? How do problems concerning mankind as a whole relate to his philosophy? How does his approach relate to philosophical anthropology? How does he view classical issues about Man’s affairs and actions? The aim of this book is to investigate the anthropological questions that Wittgenstein raised in his works. The answers to the questions raised in this introduction may be found on the intersection between forms of life and radical translation from another culture into ours. The book presents an extensive analysis of anthropological issues with emphasis on language and social elements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Die 11. BWMMS. In line with our aim to encourage international contributions, we have introduced the concept of the Focus Track to allow for a dedicated track of high impact research presentations on a specific topic in human factors. This year’s Focus Track centered on mobile brain/body imaging and neuroadaptive technology. Here, the focus was on the use of psychophysiological data for Human-Machine Systems. Two invited keynote lectures have provided a deepened insight into this new research area during this Berlin Workshop. Besides the new Focus Track, the well-established mixture of Research-, Workshop-, and Poster Tracks allowed for presentations and lively discussions research projects from all areas of human factors. This conference proceeding comprises all presented papers at the 11th BWMMS.
