Book Synopsis The Regime of Anastasio Somoza, 1936-1956 by : Knut Walter
Download or read book The Regime of Anastasio Somoza, 1936-1956 written by Knut Walter and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To many observers, Anastasio Somoza, who ruled Nicaragua from 1936 until his assassination in 1956, personified the worst features of a dictator. While not dismissing these characteristics, Knut Walter argues that the regime was in fact more notable for its achievement of stability, economic growth, and state building than for its personalistic and dictatorial features. Using a wide range of sources in Nicaraguan archives, Walter focuses on institutional and structural developments to explain how Somoza gained and consolidated power. According to Walter, Somoza preferred to resolve conflicts by political means rather than by outright coercion. Specifically, he built his government on agreements negotiated with the country's principal political actors, labor groups, and business organizations. Nicaragua's two traditional parties, one conservative and the other liberal, were included in elections, thus giving the appearance of political pluralism. Partly as a result, the opposition was forced to become increasingly radical, says Walter; eventually, in 1979, Nicaragua produced the only successful revolution in Central America and the first in all of Latin America since Cuba's.

Book Synopsis Foundations of Despotism by : Richard Lee Turits
Download or read book Foundations of Despotism written by Richard Lee Turits and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the history of the Dominican Republic as it evolved from the first European colony in the Americas into a modern nation under the rule of Rafael Trujillo. It investigates the social foundations of Trujillo’s exceptionally enduring and brutal dictatorship (1930-1961) and, more broadly, the way power is sustained in such non-democratic regimes. The author reveals how the seemingly unilateral imposition of power by Trujillo in fact depended on the regime’s mediation of profound social and economic transformations, especially through agrarian policies that assisted the nation’s large independent peasantry. By promoting an alternative modernity that sustained peasants’ free access to land during a period of economic growth, the regime secured peasant support as well as backing from certain elite sectors. This book thus elucidates for the first time the hidden foundations of the Trujillo regime.
Book Synopsis Colombia and the United States by : Bradley Lynn Coleman
Download or read book Colombia and the United States written by Bradley Lynn Coleman and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic ties with the United States were important to Colombia even in the early twentieth century, as the U.S. was the major market for coffee, Colombia's leading export and source of revenue. A 1940 trade agreement strengthened pre - World War II relations between Bogota and Washington, and Colombia's position as a close ally of the United States became evident during World War II, although its commitment to the Allied cause did not include troop participation. Colombia's strategic proximity to the Caribbean and the Panama Canal and its pro-American stance within the region were helpful to the Allied nations.Though its relations with the United States were strained during the late 1940s and throughout most of the 1950s due to the pro-Catholic Conservative government's persecution of the nation's few Protestants, Colombia's partnership with the United States prompted it to contribute troops to the UN peacekeeping force during the Korean War (1950-53). Colombia also provided the only Latin American troops to the UN Emergency Force in the Suez conflict (1956-58).Filling a gap in the available literature on U.S. relations with less developed countries, author Bradley Coleman provides new research on the development of the U. S.-Colombian alliance that will serve as an invaluable resource for scholars of U.S. and Latin American diplomacy.
