Book excerpt: A friendly, frank, compassionate and comprehensive companion for any woman experiencing menopause, or anyone wondering what to expect. We live in a world where women are still mostly seen as second class, where our beauty is our currency and our aging bodies render us somewhat invisible. Women are powerful, especially as we get older, when we begin to care less about the external. We forget the society standard and turn our back on the beauty stamp of approval . . . Now that I've crossed that invisible line into menopause, into the second half of my life, I look around me in wonder . . . and sometimes despair. It's a challenge to not see yourself the way your culture sees you. Every woman will eventually go through menopause - that's half the population of the planet! And yet it's something that is still not fully explored. It's held in shame by some women and ignored by others. It can be devastating to some and a call to freedom for others. After going through her own 'change', Ali Daddo wanted to explore all the feelings around menopause and especially the post-menopausal years that so many women talk about as being 'the best years of their life'. Through sharing her own experience in a very real way, Ali hopes that women won't feel so alone in what can be a very lonely time. Alongside stories from some very well known Australian women, including Georgie Parker, Anita Heiss and Rhonda Burchmore, Queen Menopause is the book Ali wishes she'd had when she was approaching menopause - so she could have been better prepared for what was coming, embraced the process and felt supported. This is for all women.

Additionally, within these pages, you will find ways to optimize your health before, during, and after menopause and be well informed, and empowered in your own personal advocacy. You will love it!” —Dr. Anna Cabeca, OB/GYN, bestselling author of The Hormone Fix and MenuPause You have been misled about menopause. This comprehensive guide based on the latest research in aging, women’s health, and HRT dispels decades of misinformation. The Great Menopause Myth is your essential resource for optimized menopause care. More than simply an end to fertility, menopause is a time when a woman’s health can spin out of control. The hormonal shifts of menopause impact everything from body composition and immune system function to increased risk of chronic health conditions such as cancer, diabetes, dementia, heart disease, and osteoporosis. If you’re lucky enough to even be offered menopause treatment, traditional protocols, based on decades-old shoddy science and erroneous research conclusions, have gotten it wrong. Badly wrong. For years, conventional wisdom—and medical practice—have told women nothing needs to change in their lifestyle or healthcare at midlife, and they should just white-knuckle the discomfort of hot flashes, sleeplessness, weight gain and loss of muscle mass, mood swings, painful sex, joint pain, and incontinence as if it will all just (magically) go away in a decade or two. The Great Menopause Myth shows you how to age wise and well at midlife and beyond. Learn actionable steps and guidelines to curate an optimized menopause regimen based on your unique health considerations. Nutrition, exercise, and sleep hygiene at midlife: Best practices for aging healthy Thyropause, fatty liver disease, and gut health: The overlooked systems that need attention during menopause HRT or MHT: What is the difference and does it matter? (hint: it does!!) Not all HRT is created equal: Low dose or physiologic? Static or rhythmic? Continuous or cyclic? Creams, gels, patches, injections, pills, or pellets? Learn how to choose the best option for you. When HRT is truly not an option: Supplements and integrative options for menopause care Centered on your overall health and happiness, The Great Menopause Myth offers a welcome new narrative on menopause.

Book excerpt: Antifragile is a standalone book in Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s landmark Incerto series, an investigation of opacity, luck, uncertainty, probability, human error, risk, and decision-making in a world we don’t understand. The other books in the series are Fooled by Randomness, The Black Swan, Skin in the Game, and The Bed of Procrustes. Nassim Nicholas Taleb, the bestselling author of The Black Swan and one of the foremost thinkers of our time, reveals how to thrive in an uncertain world. Just as human bones get stronger when subjected to stress and tension, and rumors or riots intensify when someone tries to repress them, many things in life benefit from stress, disorder, volatility, and turmoil. What Taleb has identified and calls “antifragile” is that category of things that not only gain from chaos but need it in order to survive and flourish. In The Black Swan, Taleb showed us that highly improbable and unpredictable events underlie almost everything about our world. In Antifragile, Taleb stands uncertainty on its head, making it desirable, even necessary, and proposes that things be built in an antifragile manner. The antifragile is beyond the resilient or robust. The resilient resists shocks and stays the same; the antifragile gets better and better. Furthermore, the antifragile is immune to prediction errors and protected from adverse events. Why is the city-state better than the nation-state, why is debt bad for you, and why is what we call “efficient” not efficient at all? Why do government responses and social policies protect the strong and hurt the weak? Why should you write your resignation letter before even starting on the job? How did the sinking of the Titanic save lives? The book spans innovation by trial and error, life decisions, politics, urban planning, war, personal finance, economic systems, and medicine. And throughout, in addition to the street wisdom of Fat Tony of Brooklyn, the voices and recipes of ancient wisdom, from Roman, Greek, Semitic, and medieval sources, are loud and clear. Antifragile is a blueprint for living in a Black Swan world. Erudite, witty, and iconoclastic, Taleb’s message is revolutionary: The antifragile, and only the antifragile, will make it. Praise for Antifragile “Ambitious and thought-provoking . . . highly entertaining.”—The Economist “A bold book explaining how and why we should embrace uncertainty, randomness, and error . . . It may just change our lives.”—Newsweek

Book excerpt: From the team behind the super-popular Instagram @MyTherapistSays comes this humorous guide that chronicles the exhausting task of navigating the daily, anxiety-ridden struggle that we fondly call life. Including hilarious memes MTS is known and loved for, along with checklists, prompts, questions from readers, and more, My Therapist Says is the guide you need to achieve your goals, one wrong turn at a time. Have you ever wanted something, pursued it (albeit not quite as gracefully as you would’ve hoped), failed, and then genuinely asked yourself the question, “Am I delusional?” Well, that’s how I began penning this magnum opus. Like the Buddhist’s have their Tripitaka, you have…moi. And my therapist, though it’s unlikely she’ll admit this in public. On the receiving end of a ghosting session? Needing a way to leave a work function without looking like a buzzkill? Having a hard time developing amnesia about your last relationship? Fear not, as I cover everything from circumstantial etiquette to blissful delusion when necessary. So, grab a pen, a box of tissues, a glass of wine, and your bestie, because sh*t is about to get real. And remember, be yourself, be kind, and all that jazz, unless you’re a Susan*. If that’s the case, try to be literally anyone else. Ugh, my therapist hates that I wrote that. *Susan: Noun and verb. Unpleasant, annoying, and delusional, the Susan is somebody who is literally awful in every way, is liked by no one, but has no clue, no matter how many open clues you give her. If you roll your eyes at this, you’re probably a Susan. Uses: Susaning, Susanism. In her first book, A Penny for Them, Benjamin Matthews (né Pollock), discovers after several startling revelations that he isn’t who he thought he was, which stops him from leaving with his wife and children for the United Arab Emirates. Determined to join them, Ben manages to escape the clutches of Sergeant Daphne Johnson, when in book two, The Penny Drops, he sneaks out of the UK to “live the dream” in the desert country’s opulent culture. Feeling sheer relief upon arrival, and lured by his new exotic surroundings and the mysteries of the desert, Ben sees no point in telling his wife who he really is. Believing him to be an orphan, she remains blissfully ignorant of both his families, until his two mothers show up together, complete with suitcases. This sparks the beginning of another inevitable run of bad luck for Ben. Just when things seem to be going okay, something always turns up to spoil it! In A Bad Penny, Ben’s easy escape to United Arab Emirates is short lived, when, like a bad penny, everyone turns up!

Book excerpt: This book argues that masculine identity is in deep crisis in Western culture - the old forms are disintegrating, while men struggle to establish new relations with women and with each other. This book offers a fresh look at gender, particularly masculinity, by using material from the author's work as a psychotherapist. The book also considers the contrubtions made by feminism, sociology and anthropology to the study of gender, and suggests that it must be studied from an interdisciplinary standpoint. Masculity is seen to have economic, political and psychological roots, but the concrete development of gender must be traced in the relations of the male infant with his parents. Here the young boy has to separate from his mother, and his own proto-feminine identity, and identify with his father - but in Western culture fathering is often deficient. Male identity is shown to be fractured, fragile and truncated. Men are trained to be rational and violent, and to shut out whole areas of existence and feeling. Many stereotypes imprison men - particularly machismo, which is shown to be deeply masochistic and self-destructive.

Book excerpt: "This book has been written with the care of a master-craftsman, courageously evaluating the medical establishment, the corporate elites and the powerful government funding institutions. It is the result of expert knowledge and great attention to details. I edit standard medical textbooks, so I esteem the decades of efforts required to research and write a book like this." ---Wolfgang Weuffen, MD, Professor of Microbiology and Infectious Epidemiology "I have been so riveted reading this book that once, while standing on a platform of a major train station, I didn't even notice the Intercity train stop right in front of me and then go on without me. The authors are absolutely right in saying that the virus hunters and the media tend to push unfounded medical theories and sensationalized news based on the seesaw formula of hype and hope. Thereby, the CDC and the RKI snatch research funds worth billions of dollars, while the pharmaceutical industry generates giant profits, among them Tamiflu maker Roche. This book is an important contribution against such dangerous stultifications." --- Sievert Lorenzen, DSc, Professor of Zoology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender has a fundamental influence on the human brain, not only by virtue of biological and hormonal differences between the sexes but also because of the impact of gender-specific cultural, social, anthropological and environmental factors. Nevertheless, the relation of gender and psychopathology remains a largely neglected field. Gender perspective has been treated as a paradigm in this book on psychopathology because it determines the way in which a psychiatric symptom is defined, perceived and understood. This conception of gender as being of key importance in the definition of psychiatric symptomatology is exceptional in the literature. The book opens by examining historical and cultural aspects of mental health in women worldwide and the relation of sex, brain and gender, with coverage of both neurobiological and psychosocial aspects. The significance of gender with regard to specific aspects of psychopathology is then addressed in detail. A wide range of psychological disorders are considered, as well as hormonal influences and issues concerning body image, self identity, sexuality and life instinct. It is hoped that this book will make a significant contribution in ensuring that gender perspective receives due attention within descriptive psychopathology.
