Book excerpt: Beyond Sentidiño: New Diasporic Reflections on Galician Culture is an interdisciplinary study of Galician literature, languages, and cultures. The volume brings together essays from fields across the humanities and social sciences to foster a discussion that incorporates new concepts that, as of now, are not part of the imaginary of Galiza: gentrification, language imperialism, youth unemployment, deruralization and deindustrialization, media control, technocapitalism, and gender and sexual normativity. It also serves to moderate a conversation about how independence from the political, material, and sociocultural networks of autonomic Galiza allows diasporic scholars to think of Galician culture in a de-essentializing manner. Working and living in the diaspora provides a lens through which to unmask the hegemonic neocolonial and neoliberal representation and reproduction of Galicianness promoted by different social, political, and mediatic powers.
Book Synopsis Peripheral Visions / Global Sounds by : José Colmeiro
Download or read book Peripheral Visions / Global Sounds written by José Colmeiro and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galician audio/visual culture has experienced an unprecedented period of growth following the process of political and cultural devolution in post-Franco Spain. This creative explosion has occurred in a productive dialogue with global currents and with considerable projection beyond the geopolitical boundaries of the nation and the state, but these seismic changes are only beginning to be the subject of attention of cultural and media studies. This book examines contemporary audio/visual production in Galicia as privileged channels through which modern Galician cultural identities have been imagined, constructed and consumed, both at home and abroad. The cultural redefinition of Galicia in the global age is explored through different media texts (popular music, cinema, video) which cross established boundaries and deterritorialise new border zones where tradition and modernity dissolve, generating creative tensions between the urban and the rural, the local and the global, the real and the imagined. The book aims for the deperipheralization and deterritorialization of the Galician cultural map by overcoming long-established hegemonic exclusions, whether based on language, discipline, genre, gender, origins, or territorial demarcation, while aiming to disjoint the center/periphery dichotomy that has relegated Galician culture to the margins. In essence, it is an attempt to resituate Galicia and Galician studies out of the periphery and open them to the world.

Download or read book Origins and Migrations in the Extended Eastern Himalayas written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-02-03 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Origins and migration are core elements in the histories, identities and stories of Tibeto-Burman-speaking populations in the extended eastern Himalayas, a region stretching from eastern Nepal through Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and the hill tracts surrounding Assam, to upland Southeast Asia and southwest China. This book is the first to bring together contemporary research on Tibeto-Burman-speaking hill peoples in this region and the only multi-disciplinary study of the closely related topics of origins and migration in this part of Asia, presenting current research by anthropologists, folklorists, linguists and historians. Through a series of case studies on local and regional populations, the contributors explore origins and migration in relation to theoretical and methodological approaches, language, identity and narrative.
Book Synopsis Gender, Displacement, and Cultural Networks of Galicia by : Obdulia Castro
Download or read book Gender, Displacement, and Cultural Networks of Galicia written by Obdulia Castro and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-02 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, bringing together a multi-voiced dialogue between academic scholars and professionals from diverse fields, shares a comprehensive and heterogeneous look at the interdisciplinarity of Galician Studies while examining a chronologically broad range of subjects from the 1800s to the present. This volume carves out a distinct approach to gender studies investigating issues of culture, language, displacement, counterculture artists, and community projects as related to questions of politics, gender and class. Women, conceived as both individual and political bodies, are studied, among other things, as an example of what it means to struggle from the margins emphasizing the importance of looking at the opposition between the center and the peripheries when studying the relationship between space and culture.

Download or read book Abstract Artists written by John Castagno and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Castagno's Artists' Signatures and Monograms have become the standard reference source for galleries, museums, libraries, and collectors around the world. Whether used to identify, authenticate, or verify signatures and works of both well-known and little-known artists, Castagno's work has no equal. In this new volume, Castagno has collected the signatures and monograms of artists who have spent all or a part of their careers in abstract art--painters, printmakers, sculptors, and photographers worldwide. This book features approximately 2,300 artists with more than 3,900 signature examples of how they sign their works. In addition to the standard signature entries, the book contains sections for monograms and initials, common surname signatures, alternative surname signatures, symbols, and Cyrillic signatures. This book also lists an additional 1,500 artists whose entry bears no signature. All 3,800 artists are listed with the most updated information on nationality, birth, and/or death dates. The entries direct the researcher to many biographical and bibliographical sources not found on web site searches, and many of the resources offer additional references. Several individual listings provide gallery referrals and catalog auction dates, which can be used to buy or sell a particular artist's work. The use of Abstract Artists Signatures and Monograms: An International Directory provides the researcher a reference tool not duplicated elsewhere--one that will save many hours of research.
