Book excerpt: Men of Physics: L. D. Landau, Volume 2: Thermodynamics, Plasma Physics and Quantum Mechanics is dedicated to L. D. Landau's contributions in the fields of thermodynamics, plasma physics, and quantum mechanics. Landau's theory of second-order phase transitions is discussed, along with his contributions to nuclear physics, astrophysics, cosmic ray physics, and quantum field theory. This volume is comprised of 15 chapters and begins with a discussion on Landau's theory of second-order phase transitions, which includes his assumption that all thermodynamic functions would allow regular series expansions near the transition point. The following chapters focus on Landau's papers on the transport equation for ionized systems and on plasma oscillations; his contributions to nuclear physics, cosmic ray physics, and astrophysics; his work in pure quantum mechanics; and his contributions to quantum field theory. The second section elaborates on the theory of phase transitions; the transport equation in the case of Coulomb interactions; the vibrations of the electronic plasma; and the statistical theory of nuclei. The origin of stellar energy is also examined, along with the multiple production of particles during collisions of fast particles and the extension of the uncertainty principle to relativistic quantum theory. A theory of energy transfer in collisions is also described. The final chapter considers the conservation laws for weak interactions. This book will be a useful resource for physicists and students interested in the work of L. D. Landau.

Book Synopsis Thermodynamics of Flowing Systems by : Antony N. Beris
Download or read book Thermodynamics of Flowing Systems written by Antony N. Beris and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1994-05-26 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This much-needed monograph presents a systematic, step-by-step approach to the continuum modeling of flow phenomena exhibited within materials endowed with a complex internal microstructure, such as polymers and liquid crystals. By combining the principles of Hamiltonian mechanics with those of irreversible thermodynamics, Antony N. Beris and Brian J. Edwards, renowned authorities on the subject, expertly describe the complex interplay between conservative and dissipative processes. Throughout the book, the authors emphasize the evaluation of the free energy--largely based on ideas from statistical mechanics--and how to fit the values of the phenomenological parameters against those of microscopic models. With Thermodynamics of Flowing Systems in hand, mathematicians, engineers, and physicists involved with the theoretical study of flow behavior in structurally complex media now have a superb, self-contained theoretical framework on which to base their modeling efforts.

Book Synopsis Recent Advances in Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations and Applications by : Xiaobing Feng
Download or read book Recent Advances in Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations and Applications written by Xiaobing Feng and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An emerging field over the past 15 years, computational mathematics is a vast area which has experienced major developments in both algorithmic advances and applications to other fields. These developments have had profound implications in mathematics, science, engineering and industry. Compiled here are six of nine in-depth survey papers with an expository discussion on computational mathematics that were presented at the 2001 John H. Barrett Memorial Lectures at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. They focus on parallel numerical algorithms for partial differential equations, their implementation and applications in fluid mechanics and material science. Each of the lecturers is a leading researcher in the field of computational mathematics and its applications. This book will be a useful reference for graduate students as well as the many groups of researchers working in advanced computations, including engineering and computer scientists. Prior knowledge of partial differential equations and their numerical methods is helpful.
