Book excerpt: In almost all cultures males have been elevated to be all-powerful, all- knowing, imputed with attributes of a god, a burden far beyond mortal abilities; a heavy load to carry - it's unfair. The term "man-kind" puts the collective concept of "male" as dominant, in control of all hu-mans, in control of bodies and minds - an overwhelming responsibility. All hu-mans are perceived as "man"- kind, but in reality, we are males and fe-males, men, wom-men (womb-men). No hu-man is all powerful nor all-knowing. Daily, momentarily, society expects a man to make right decisions, have the right answers at hand. He's supposed to understand tax laws, how to fix the plumbing, fix the car, hit a homer, be a well-paid executive and a patient, caring, all-wise Dad and husband. This happens only on TV.This perception of omnipotence of "man" is a burden - unrealistic. When a man seems "incompetent" - mortal, he's labeled "failure", "loser". Society covers up this perceived "failure" by sympathy, "Well, he's a good man anyway," "Well, he didn't have a chance," "Well, we need to be more patient..." We're chaffing the wound, encouraging division. Women, on the other hand, are encouraged, expected to set their needs aside to accommodate the man. When they don't, both men and women perceive that independence as selfish and society becomes antagonistic - we take sides, divide.C. S. Lewis in "Mere Christianity", suggests humans were created with a built-in sense of right and wrong. The expression varies with the culture, but the sense is innate in all cultures. This sense is based in the need to cooperate, so the species will survive. Plato and Aristotle said the same thing, i.e., "Let's get along...it's the right thing."However, the media encourages division and antagonism between males and fe-males; we're not cohesive - we're "us" against "them", divided by race, gender, politics, religion and nationality. This is profitable for the media but destructive to cultures and families. We cannot survive divided.Perhaps the basic dividing factor is religion, not "God". Organized religion is often warped; it teaches that "man", solely, is the representative of God. The "man" assumes control of all life. "Woman" is perceived as inferior. She is then forcibly en-cumbered by pregnancy, so she is easily controlled.Let's dispel the myth that God is a man and a man is God. It ain't necessarily so... Each man needs inner peace, self-appreciation, - all attributes of Popeye, an endearing, homely, self-accepting, individual. Popeye is Everyman - every "hu-man". Since this book is written for men I'll be talking directly to them to explain men's behavior from a woman's point of view. No doubt this view will be skewed; any clarifying, exchange of perception, is welcome. We need each other.

Book excerpt: What is the one aspect of this broken world that, when you see it, touch it, get near it, you just can’t stand? Very likely, that firestorm of frustration reflects your holy discontent, a reality so troubling that you are thrust off the couch and into the game. It’s during these defining times when your eyes open to the needs surrounding you and your heart hungers to respond that you hear God say, “I feel the same way about this problem. Now, let’s go solve it together!”Bill Hybels invites you to consider the dramatic impact your life will have when you allow your holy discontent to fuel instead of frustrate you. Using examples from the Bible, his own life, and the experiences of others, Hybels shows how you can find and feed your personal area of holy discontent, fight for it when things get risky, and follow it when it takes a mid-course turn. As you live from the energy of your holy discontent, you’ll fulfill your role in setting what is wrong in this world right!

In Why Is A Stepfather Called A Stepfather? J. F. McCormick, III., focuses on the stepfather because it seems as though the majority of stepparent homes are headed by stepfathers. He then differentiates between the bad stepfather and the good stepfather. The latter being the one who deserves a lot of praise but rarely receives it because society lumps the good in with the bad and looks down on both. The good stepfather deserves much praise because he is constantly exposed to problems with the children and many times with his wife that the biological father dont have to face. Problems like being told: Youre not my father! You cant tell me what to do! Problems like being told: Youre not their father! You cant spank them! Gods special love for stepfathers comes to view as He arranged for Moses and Jesus to be raised by stepfathers! Many mothers and stepchildren will be challenged to value good stepfathers the way that God values them as they strive to make a difficult family situation more livable.

Book excerpt: “Be careful who you trust... things are not always as they seem.” Marcus Churchill is a bright, fit and handsome young man with a strong sense of justice and fair play. He lives in a world where truth and social order are the norm, and where deception and crime are simply beyond his comprehension. That was until, one day, a lie provokes a sequence of events that expose just how imperfect and fragile his ordered society really is. In this fast-moving action adventure, filled with subtle twists and turns, romance, humour and even corruption and war, Marcus’s mundane and tidy life is turned into a struggle for survival - not just his own survival, but also the survival of his world. God’s Children will grip you from start to finish. However, to the ‘philosophers’ among us, this story might be read as an exploration of the challenging topic of how society treats its minority and hard-to-understand groups, wrapping issues of race, colour, disability and political correctness into the storyline in a subtle and totally novel, yet highly entertaining way.

Book excerpt: In The Devil and Philosophy, 34 philosophers explore questions about one of the most recognizable and influential characters (villains?) of all time. From Roman Polanski's The Ninth Gate to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion to Bram Stoker's Dracula to Darth Vader to Al Pacino's iconic performance in The Devil's Advocate, this book demonstrates that a little devil goes a long way. From humorous appearances, as in Kevin Smith's film Dogma and Chuck Palahniuk's novels Damned and its sequel Doomed, to more villanous appearances, such as Gabriel Byrne's cold outing as Satan in End of Days, The Devil in Philosophy proves that the Devil comes in many forms. Through the lenses of Jung, Kant, Kundera, Balkan, Plato, Bradwardine, Aristotle, Hume, Blackburn, Descartes, Lavey, Thoreau, and Aquinas, The Devil and Philosophy take a philosophical look at one of time's greatest characters. Are there any good arguments for the actual existence of the Devil? Does demonic evil thrive in Gotham City? Can humans really be accountable for all evil? Which truths about the Devil are actual facts? Is Milton correct, in that the Devil believes he is doing good?

Book excerpt: I've begged God for forgiveness, but I won't know till the day I die if He has truly forgiven me ... I've paid my dues to society by serving my long sentence, but perhaps I haven't earned His indulgence ... Oh my God, I've lived so many different lives! I survived Pablo Escobar Gaviria, El Patrón (The Boss), and it was the strength of his indomitable spirit that kept me going all these years; I don't quite know how or why. I still feel his presence every day of my existence. The Medellin cartel's crimes weigh as heavily on my shoulders today as they did yesterday. My youth, wasted in crime, became the sword that now hangs over my graying head. To the world, I'll always be known by my alias, Popeye, the fearsome hitman of the Medellin cartel, Pablo Escobar Gaviria's right-hand man ... How can I make you understand I'm a new man ... that twenty-three years behind bars in that hellhole have transformed the person I once was. Now the freedom I yearned for is vanishing in the murderous hands of my enemies. Perhaps fate has extended my life only to toy with me by preparing my own dying moments. I survived in captivity but I don't know if I'll be able to live in freedom ... A prisoner of my own mind, I'll try to fight to find some peace ... It's very cold ... now it's August 2014. I'm one step from freedom and I'm still breathing ... still here in this dimly lit cell in the maximum security prison in Cómbita, Boyacá.

Book excerpt: Underwater horror rises to the surface in this science fiction thriller from the author “who knows the details of deep-sea exploration firsthand” (Ben Bova, Hugo Award-wining author). A Japanese fishing trawler becomes a ghost ship. A pleasure yacht is under attack by unknown sea creatures. A Coast Guard crew is massacred by something not of this world. Ted Bell had only one personal goal—to reach Mars. He believed that harnessing the power of the deep-sea bacteria that allows creatures to live in super-heated, poisonous water might get humans to deep space. But when Ted intentionally infected a member of the crew for his own agenda, it didn’t go as planned. A new life form was created–completely out of control. Ted’s failed experiment doomed the crew of the USS Challenger. After living through the terrifying disaster that killed half the crew, three survivors think they have escaped the nightmare. Instead, the creatures have risen from the depths—and the three discover that the horrifying experience on the Challenger was only the beginning. Praise for Deep Black Sea “Spine-tingling terror . . . An exciting read!” —Ben Bova, Hugo Award-winning author “Crichton at his best is the main author who comes to mind as a comparable influence when reading Deep Black Sea . . . The informative and fascinating science that fills each page really elevates this book to a higher grade.” —Horror Novel Reviews

Book excerpt: "A native of the Rust Belt whose own life resonates with these stories, Rotella has gone to the home turf of his characters, hanging out in boxing gyms and blues clubs, riding along with cops and moviemakers, discussing the future of Brockton with a visionary artist and a pitbull-fancying janitor who both plan to save the city's soul. These people make culture with their hands, and hands become an expressive metaphor for Rotella as he traces the links between their individual talents and the urban scenes in which they flourish. His writing connects what happens on the street to the larger story of urban transformation, especially the shift from a way of life that demanded individuals be "good with their hands" to one that depends on the intellectual and social skills fostered by formal education and service work."

Book excerpt: The Muslim world is clamoring for democracy in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and elsewhere. The Christian world is clamoring for moderate Muslims to denounce the actions of the fundamentalists. Through the message communicated in Friends in Low Places, Dr. Ibrahim seeks to bridge the gap between people with competing beliefs. The journey started in the Bronx where Dr. Ibrahim opened an HIV clinic, and where mere survival causes the rubber of ones belief to meet the road of a harsh life. The greatest human accomplishment is that of a reconciled relationship through the gift of love. But God's unconditional love creates the most sublime relationship because it lasts forever and is never wanting, nor can it be lost. Dr. Habib Ibrahims clinic is a dangerous place but it is also a loving place where the grace of God shines. After having had a dream in which Jesus motioned with his hands saying, Bring them to me and I will heal them, Dr. Ibrahim had a new passion to bring Gods love and healing to the Bronx. Dr. Ibrahim and his wife became partners in a clinic where Jesus Christ serves as The Master Physician. Narrating the spiritual journey during the last fifteen years of Ibrahims life, Friends in Low Places provides a humorous and sometimes poignant look at how Ibrahim seeks to fashion a human spirit that reflects the Holy Spirit of God. Only God loves us perfectly, and as we thirst for Him, He thirsts for us, as told by an old Sufi Muslim saying: Oh, you who are thirsty for the tea do not realize that the tea is also thirsty for you. From age thirty-five to fifty, this memoir offers an eclectic representation of what Ibrahim has learned. It includes quips from his Bronx patients, which are often colored with deep meaning, and testimonies of life told through poems, essays, his Bronx patients lives, and the lives of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish friends. This book contains the account of three Muslims, one gangster, one crack addict, and one Orthodox Jew, all whom found the love of Jesus. There is even a story of a soldier from Afghanistan who drove a tank during the Russian occupation, this man was overwhelmed by the words spoken by Jesus, encouraging us to 'love our enemies.' We Americans are the next superpower in Afghanistan, but I wonder what weapon Jesus would use to win the hearts of the citizens there. Would he use a tomahawk missile, a drone plane, or would He use his old standard weapon, the wooden cross? Dr. Ibrahim says, "I was once a Muslim from Pakistan, but after 9/11, I am also a Christian from Manhattan Island. I pray that God will invert the original purpose of this satanic terrorist attack, and as such, God will bring more people to become seekers of His love. When times are good, we Americans think that our success is because of our own wisdom and might. Persecution from fundamentalist Muslims reminds us that we are still vulnerable and need to turn to God for protection and answers. Furthermore, we need to pray for those who persecute us, just as Jesus prayed for his tormentors when He was on the cross. Despite 9/11, if we are motivated to pray and practice fasting, Americans can regain their spiritual center of gravity, and many more Muslims can encounter the precious love of Jesus Christ."----Chapter 8, East meets West.
