Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men and Women of the Eighteenth Century, Vol. 1 AN ancient sage has represented human reason under the form of an adventuress in rags resting in the evening upon ruins. Can we not thus represent the pliilosophy of the eighteenth century? She has penetrated the tem ple - she has there inscribed her name; but the temple is naught but a majestic ruin. In the eighteenth cen tury, wit destroyed the heart, reason destroyed poetry. After the reign of Pascal, who sought God in a future life, is the reign of Voltaire, who, forgetting God, stud ed only human life. The heart beat no more; wit de voured all. The seventeenth century was the slave of heaven; the eighteenth century proclaimed itself free, and broke the golden chains which joined heaven to earth. Enslaved, it had the voluptuousness of endurance: free, it stretched its arms, and found but vacuity. Pascal saw the abyss under his feet, but he also saw heaven beyond the. The first sprightly, frivolous, charming even in its follies, is marvellously personified in some well-known figures: Phillipe d'Orleans and La Phalaris, the Due de Richelieu and the Abbess de Chelles, Antoine Walteau, Voltaire in his youth. Mademoiselle de Camargo, the king Louis XV., supported by Madame de Pompadour and Madame Dubarry, Boucher and Vanloo, La Tour and Greuze, Voisenon who was an abbe, and Bernis who was a cardinal. Who besides? Shall I dare, after all these profane names, to mention her who consoled herself for the king and the throne, in her sheepfold of the Trianon? Do not forget some celebrated actresses: Mademoiselle Guimard, who lived like a queen; Sophie Arnould, who lived like a philosopher; others of rather less celebrity in the background of the picture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men and Women of the Eighteenth Century, Vol. 2 IT may excite astonishment that we return to individuals who, at the first glance, appear to be known to everybody, but in no instance have thought of reanimating one of these figures without the aid of unpublished documents. Up to the pres ent time, moreover, much greater attention has been given to a variation in the text of an author, than to a trait of character in his life. What, however, can he more interesting, than the study of the passions of a man whose name has survived him! Our chief study, therefore, in a poet should be, less the work which bears his name, than the movements of his heart. Poetry in action attracts us more than poetry ut] paper. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many scholars have written about eighteenth-century English novels, but no one really knows who read them. This study provides historical data on the provincial reading publics for various forms of fiction - novels, plays, chapbooks, children's books, and magazines. Archival records of Midland booksellers based in five market towns and selling printed matter to over thirty-three hundred customers between 1744 and 1807 form the basis for new information about who actually bought and borrowed different kinds of fiction in eighteenth-century provincial England. This book thus offers the first solid demographic information about actual readership in eighteenth-century provincial England, not only about the class, profession, age, and sex of readers but also about the market of available fiction from which they made their choices - and some speculation about why they made the choices they did. Contrary to received ideas, men in the provinces were the principal customers for eighteenth-century novels, including those written by women. Provincial customers preferred to buy rather than borrow fiction, and women preferred plays and novels written by women - women's works would have done better had women been the principal consumers. That is, demand for fiction (written by both men and women) was about equal for the first five years, but afterward the demand for women's works declined. Both men and women preferred novels with identifiable authors to anonymous ones, however, and both boys and men were able to cross gender lines in their reading. Goody Two-Shoes was one of the more popular children's books among Rugby schoolboys, and men read the Lady's Magazine. These and other findings will alter the way scholars look at the fiction of the period, the questions asked, and the histories told of it.

Book excerpt: “Like man, woman is a human being.” When The Second Sex was first published in Paris in 1949—groundbreaking, risqué, brilliantly written and strikingly modern—it provoked both outrage and inspiration. The Independent Woman contains three key chapters of Beauvoir’s masterwork, which illuminate the feminine condition and identify practical social reforms for gender equality. It captures the essence of the spirited manifesto that switched on light bulbs in the heads of a generation of women and continues to exert profound influence on feminists today.

Book excerpt: The handbook offers a comprehensive introduction to the British novel in the long eighteenth century, when this genre emerged to develop into the period’s most versatile and popular literary form. Part I features six systematic chapters that discuss literary, intellectual, socio-economic, and political contexts, providing innovative approaches to issues such as sense and sentiment, gender considerations, formal characteristics, economic history, enlightened and radical concepts of citizenship and human rights, ecological ramifications, and Britain’s growing global involvement. Part II presents twenty-five analytical chapters that attend to individual novels, some canonical and others recently recovered. These analyses engage the debates outlined in the systematic chapters, undertaking in-depth readings that both contextualize the works and draw on relevant criticism, literary theory, and cultural perspectives. The handbook’s breadth and depth, clear presentation, and lucid language make it attractive and accessible to scholar and student alike.
