This book makes its subject matter lively and engaging by including loads of information in a way that the reader can easily grasp with its clearly-written narrative, use of illustrations, information boxes, composer profiles, and generous quantities of interesting material, such as composers' letters and critic's reviews of music throughout the ages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "...the best extant map of our sonic shadowlands, and it has changed how I listen."—Alex Ross, The New Yorker "...an essential survey of contemporary music."—New York Times "…sharp, provacative and always on the money. The listening list alone promises months of fresh discovery, the main text a fresh new way of navigating the world of sound."—The Wire 2017 Music Book of the Year—Alex Ross, The New Yorker Music after the Fall is the first book to survey contemporary Western art music within the transformed political, cultural, and technological environment of the post–Cold War era. In this book, Tim Rutherford-Johnson considers musical composition against this changed backdrop, placing it in the context of globalization, digitization, and new media. Drawing connections with the other arts, in particular visual art and architecture, he expands the definition of Western art music to include forms of composition, experimental music, sound art, and crossover work from across the spectrum, inside and beyond the concert hall. Each chapter is a critical consideration of a wide range of composers, performers, works, and institutions, and develops a broad and rich picture of the new music ecosystem, from North American string quartets to Lebanese improvisers, from electroacoustic music studios in South America to ruined pianos in the Australian outback. Rutherford-Johnson puts forth a new approach to the study of contemporary music that relies less on taxonomies of style and technique than on the comparison of different responses to common themes of permission, fluidity, excess, and loss.

A History of Music in Western Culture, 4/e is based on the premise that the best way to convey the history of Western music is to focus on specific works of music. The text is structured around a carefully selected repertory of music that reflects the development of the art form throughout time. Mark Evan Bonds helps readers gain a broad understanding of the nature of music, its role in society, and the ways in which these have changed over time. Book Synopsis How Musical is Man? by : John Blacking
Download or read book How Musical is Man? written by John Blacking and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 1973 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important study in ethnomusicology is an attempt by the author -- a musician who has become a social anthropologist -- to compare his experiences of music-making in different cultures. He is here presenting new information resulting from his research into African music, especially among the Venda. Venda music, he discovered is in its way no less complex in structure than European music. Literacy and the invention of nation may generate extended musical structures, but they express differences of degree, and not the difference in kind that is implied by the distinction between 'art' and 'folk' music. Many, if not all, of music's essential processes may be found in the constitution of the human body and in patterns of interaction of human bodies in society. Thus all music is structurally, as well as functionally, 'folk' music in the sense that music cannot be transmitted of have meaning without associations between people. If John Blacking's guess about the biological and social origins of music is correct, or even only partly correct, it would generate new ideas about the nature of musicality, the role of music in education and its general role in societies which (like the Venda in the context of their traditional economy) will have more leisure time as automation increases.

Book Synopsis The Collected Works of Wyndham Lewis: Time and Western Man by : Paul Edwards
Download or read book The Collected Works of Wyndham Lewis: Time and Western Man written by Paul Edwards and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-19 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Collected Works of Wyndham Lewis brings together for the first time all of the published writings of Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957), a major contributor to literary modernism and one of the most important British painters of the first half of the twentieth century. This is the first comprehensive edition of Time and Western Man, with explanatory notes, previously unpublished drafts, a history of composition, and an account of its critical reception. Originally published in 1927, Time and Western Man is one of Lewis's most important books, and a pioneering work of cultural criticism. It contains scathing criticism of his fellow modernist writers, Ezra Pound, James Joyce, and Gertrude Stein. The second part of the book analyses and attacks the philosophy of 'Time', focusing especially on Henri Bergson, A. N. Whitehead, Samuel Alexander, and Oswald Spengler. Many of Lewis's most penetrating arguments are in the drafts that are printed in this edition for the first time.
