Book excerpt: I will begin by telling you a little about the person who I am and how I came to write these pages..... Today, I own and operate a real working cattle ranch along with a Country Western Bar and Grill, Western Wear, Feed and Saddle at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. I grew up in a small farming community in rolling hills of rural Ohio. I enlisted in the Military at age 17 and was selected by the US CID to do covert operations in the North Carolina region of USACIDC. I worked as a CID Agent for 7 years and then left the CID but continued to work with special operations for an additional two years. After 10 years of working as a covert undercover officer. I decided to change direction and become and retired a North Carolina State Trooper. The following poems and short stories were inspired by true events or friends who have touched my life in some matter and have forever changed my life. It is said that friendship is clairvoyant. With a true friend words are never needed. What you enjoy doing together will come natural and such a friendship shall stand throughout the ages. I hope you find such a friendship in your life and then you savor each day and share it with that someone special in your life as you go. Whether we realize it or not, everyone we know is very special to us. When we look back on our younger years, we will remember The people who went to school with us, the people who made us laugh, the people who hung out with us when nobody else would, and the people who made our lives much better simply by being a part of it. That's the wonderful thing about friendship--you always feel loved and cared about. The most important thing to remember is to always appreciate the friends that you have.... Seek out and find the time in each day to see the Beauty and Love in the world around you....

Book excerpt: An Oprah Magazine Best Romance Novel of 2020 In this brand-new series from award-winning author Rebekah Weatherspoon, a charming cowboy and his sleeping beauty find their modern-day happily ever after . . . With a headline spot on a hit morning show and truly mouth-watering culinary skills, chef Evie Buchanan is perched on the edge of stardom. But at an industry party, a fall lands Evie in the hospital—with no memory of who she is. Scrambling to help, Evie’s assistant contacts the only “family” Evie has left, close friends who run the luxury dude ranch in California where Evie grew up. Evie has no recollection of them—until former rodeo champion Zach Pleasant walks into her hospital room, and she realizes his handsome face has been haunting her dreams . . . Zach hasn’t seen Evie in years—not since their families conducted a campaign to make sure their childhood friendship never turned into anything more. When the young cowboy refused to admit the feelings between them were real, Evie left California, making it clear she never wanted to see Zach again. Now he refuses to make the same mistake twice. Starting fresh is a risk when they have a history she can’t recall, but Zach can’t bear to let go of her now. Can he awaken the sleeping beauty inside her who might still love him?

Book excerpt: As a young child during the hippie era, Donna Harlan quickly embraced one of the most popular fashion trends in the nation up until that time: the American cowboy/cowgirl. With television in many baby boomers' homes, the trend spread like wild fire. Many of these cowboys and cowgirls still share that connection from their youth. Writing with a keen sense of human nature, customs, and style from some of the more unique fashion periods of the latter half of the 20th century, Harlan shares humorous stories through a lens filtered by the contents of her closet. From restricting uniforms to liberating miniskirts, canvas shoes to corduroy pants, girls in cowgirl suits to flower children wearing peace signs and fringed vests, she reveals the impact these clothing items had on some of the most impressionable times of her life when clothing was, more than ever before, a means of individual expression. Clothing Memoirs of a Wannabe Cowgirl: Remembrances of Growing Up in the 1960s and '70s is an engaging way to quickly catapult many back to that vibrant, colorful period. Experience your memories of key life events during this changing time or discover some of the unique fashions that were popular at that time.

Book excerpt: Growing up on the embattled Mawr Estate in South Wales, all Gemma sees are burglaries, muggings, sadness and boredom. With a dad in prison and a mum who has given up hope, she, like everyone around her, is holding on to memories of the times when happiness wasn't so hard to find. When her search for the scene of a perfect childhood day takes her up into the surrounding hills, Gemma is forced into a meeting with the legendary Cowgirl. Everyone at school knows she's a weirdo: six foot tall and angry, the only conversations she has are with the twelve cows on her dad's farm. But with her abrupt arrival in Gemma's life, everything starts to look different. And with her only friends in mortal danger of the abattoir, it turns out she and Gemma have a mission on their hands. A gently funny story of a community coming together, this is a tale of happy endings in unexpected places. Shortlisted for the Waterstones Prize Winner of the Tir na n-Og Award Cover illustration by Tom Clohosy Cole. Also by G. R. Gemin: Sweet Pizza "The warmth and charm of 'Sweet Pizza' are quite extraordinary; though there are some very moving moments, it is mainly a joyous and eccentric comedy." - Kate Saunders, Guardian Children's Fiction Prize Judge

Book excerpt: Two years after he won the average at the Las Vegas National Rodeo Finals by riding Kamikaze, the world’s most unridable bull, Lick is down on his luck, working on a ranch in the remote Nevada desert with Al Bean, an ornery old cowboy. Then into their lives crashes Teddie Arizona–aka T.A.–a woman of mystery who crawls out of the wreckage of her plane with a $500,000 secret. When T.A.’s “husband,” F. Rank Pantaker, dispatches his henchmen to retrieve the money–and the girl–Lick and Al find themselves trying to outrun the bad guys and protect a damsel in distress. Is T.A. out to cheat her cheatin’ husband, or is she really just trying to stop an illegal scheme cooked up by F. Rank and the infamous Ponce de Crayon, Vegas’s most glamorous tiger tamer? Is she playing Lick–or is it love? Will Al Bean’s cockeyed schemes, an able assist from Cody, Lick’s cowboy sidekick, a brigade of old-time rodeo reunioneers, and a few miles of duct tape be enough to stop F. Rank’s nefarious plan, reform a career party girl, and change the hearts and minds of ten of the world’s most thrill-seeking billionaires? Can Cody keep Lick from climbing onto raging bull Kamikaze’s back one more time? Can true love triumph over shoot-outs at the not-so-okay corral and close encounters with white tigers? Hey, this is Baxter Black—what do you think? Written with Baxter’s rip-roaring humor and inventive language, this caper gallops to a thunderously satisfying conclusion. Fans who enjoyed Hey, Cowboy, Wanna Get Lucky? will relish their reunion with Lick and Cody, while new readers will delight in this unforgettable cast of characters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texas boasts greater bird diversity than almost any state, with more than six hundred species living in or passing through during spring and fall migrations. Jennifer L. Bristol’s Parking Lot Birding speaks to people who would love to observe a wide variety of birds in easy access locations that don’t require arduous hikes or a degree in ornithology. As she explains, “I have personally trudged down hundreds of miles of trails in Texas, loaded down with gear, searching for birds, only to return to the parking lot to find what I was looking for.” Drawing on her experience as a former park ranger and lifelong nature enthusiast, Bristol explores ninety birding locations that are open to the public and accessible regardless of ability or mobility. Divided by geography, with each of the nine sections centered on a large urban area or defined ecoregion, Parking Lot Birding: A Fun Guide to Discovering Birds in Texas will take readers to birds in locales from the busy heart of Dallas to the remote Muleshoe Wildlife Refuge in the plains north of Lubbock. Each birding stop includes the name and address of a specific birding location, number of species that have been recorded, and types of birding amenities offered. Locational accounts end with a “Feather Fact” that provides interesting and relevant details about selected birds in a particular region. You never know what you might see when on the beaten path, especially in a state as big and ecologically diverse as Texas. So grab your binoculars and let’s go birding!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who could have known . . . . . . that this girl child, seeded in a little cabin at a Columbine resort on her mothers honeymoon, would carry stardust in her veins from a stellar system so very far away in the universe? It would have been impossible at that time for anyone to know that in this mortal flesh walked an entity of high spiritual esteem. My mother named me Diana after the goddess of the hunt, the forest, and the beloved moonwhich is merely 250 thousand miles away. Precious, precious and set aside, kept safe for these days; I was tenderly wrapped in mythology and poetry and tucked in nightly by my mother who showed me the moon and the man who lived there. This magical lady told me, her firstborn, that I was made of moonbeams and stardust. There is no doubt in my mind that I was programmed by Lorines love of poetry and stories. Her childlike belief in the truth of fairytales and the magic of rhyme and words strung together like precious jewels in a royal necklace was impressed into my DNA. (This caused certain dendrons to lie down and give way to those that would stand tall and carry verse and prose through my soul like a great river.) I have kept my promise to Lorine. I have written her story, The Cowgirl Princess and Starwalker, using her collection of journals and photographs and of course, I wove it all together with my own especially special collection of memories and lots and lots of stardust and tears.
