Book excerpt: "The Broken Mirror" is a collection of memories about a special place, a special time, and some very special people. It is an unofficial history of the time spent in the small North Carolina towns of Willow Springs, Myatt's Mill, Mount Pleasant, Panther Branch Township, and Varina-Fuquay. Decades have passed. But the old houses, dilapidated barns, and broken mirrors that lay in the rubble have a lot to say about that era and the people to whom they once belonged. Now abandoned, they serve as reminders that life is as much about yesterday as it about today. The author's exploration of these secret places hidden in plain sight have revealed amazing treasures and valued memories. The artifacts were left behind for others to find. But the stories that those old gems told were taken and relayed in the pages of "The Broken Mirror." These are the memories of a time long gone, uncluttered by today's complicated lifestyles. With the world growing more technological and people more distant, this book serves as a retreat to a simpler time where conversation was king and the corner store was the center of the universe. The people who shared their stories in "The Broken Mirror" are living encyclopedias. They may forget where they left their car keys, but they can remember every shop on Main Street, who owned each one, and all of their relations. They can tell you about fairs and picnics and school dances like they happened just yesterday. Whether you are from North Carolina or any one of the other states that make up our great country, you will find laughter, wisdom, and comfort in these memories - sweet and bitter. The people who walked the streets of these old towns saw hardships and overcame them. They believed in the beauty of community. Now you are invited to become a neighbor. Escape into their world and fall in love with the stories chronicled on the pages of "The Broken Mirror."

Book excerpt: Talmadge P. Fletcher has written Memories from Thickety in order to preserve a record of his life experiences, mainly for his children, grandchildren, and other relatives. He undertook writing the book at the urging of his granddaughter. The book will also be worthwhile reading for anyone who wishes to know about the Great Depression, World War II, and the mountain region of western North Carolina from a personal perspective. A special feature of the book is the author's narration of his participation in "Operation Carpetbagger" which provided covert support to the French underground resistance to German occupation during WWII. Another part of the author's intention in writing this book is to help the younger generations learn what a difference there is between today and what some people call "the good old days." In the author's younger days, many people, especially in the mountains of western North Carolina, lived without washing machines, refrigerators, electric stoves, TVs, radios, and cars. The author says, "We never missed those things because we never had them." Memories from Thickety relates many incidents of hardship, but the author is often able to look back upon them and see their humorous aspects. The author was born in Gastonia, North Carolina, in 1923, but he has spent most of the ninety years of his life in Haywood County in the midst of the mountains of western North Carolina. All of his family and relatives are natives of the mountains of western North Carolina.

Book excerpt: "Fond Recollections of small town living...The best place in the world to call home." Memory as a River is from the very heart of its author, Virginia Midgett Richardson and is the true story of the joys, sorrows, fun and advantages of being reared in a true American small town or village, as one would call this riverside place she loves so much. All who know and love small towns will recognize the folks who were neighbors and friends even though they will be different. Too, others who only know the city life will catch a glimpse of why we love the place we hold in our hearts as always being home...Where everyone knows our name and is always there to lend a helping hand. Because of her loving and patient mother, Virginia learned to read and write before she started school. Almost from the time she could hold a pencil, she wanted to put her thoughts and feelings into words. She won a small prize in the first grade by writing a little poem and from then on, she tried to put all she saw and heard into rhyme or short prose and later on, had many of these published in the local newspapers Reared in the small fishing village of Sneads Ferry near the southeastern coast of North Carolina, Virginia paid special attention to the stories of the fishermen who made their living from the river and ocean, These included her grandfather, father, brothers, many cousins and others. She listened with fascination to tales of big catches, violent storms which often caught them by surprise and other stories. However, she loved poetry so much that her stories usually came out in rhyme and were mostly about the river she loved so much.
