These were the days of the first telephones coming to rural areas and black-and-white TVs always housed in terribly heavy consoles. They had tubes in them at the time that would burn out constantly. The antennas on the rooftops would generally bring in around three stations, which could be watched without excessive graininess. Because of their vast weight, a repairman had to be summoned each time a tube went out. If it wasn't this, it would be network problems, which caused the screens to roll for an indeterminable periods of time. Everything was much different at that time. The highly awaited telephones were vastly different from the ones we know today. They called them party lines at the time which meant there could be a handful of different households on each line. This meant every phone had a different ring; such as two shorts or one long, etc, It also meant anyone could eavesdrop whenever they wanted which was called rubbering in. As you can see nothing of any importance was ever discussed on them. And how would you like to go without A/C? At that time, it just didn't exist, in anything! At least where we lived. The other story, "Flat Tires," was rescued from the recesses of his mind, for the salvation of all mankind!.

Neihardt's early short fiction begun with The End of the Dream and Other Stories. Originally published in popular magazines between 1905 and 1908, these stories about the American frontier illustrated Neihardt's artistry in the short form and foreshadow the themes, situations, and characterizations of his later, better-known work. Although two of the Indian stories, the ironic "Feather for Feather" and the satirical "A Political Coup at Little Omaha," were collected in The Lonesome Trail in 1907, none has been reprinted since early in the twentieth century. Other stories included here are "Like a Woman," featuring the plucky Pelagie, and "The Face in the Balcony," which is dedicated to "those who have gone through life misunderstood." "The Epic-Minded Scot," about a stranger who is stubbornly idealistic and scrupulous, is considered one of Neihardt's best tales. "The Brutal Fact" revolves around a William Tell type of contest between trapping partners that anticipates Neihardt's Song of Three Friends. "The Lure of Woman," a study of greed and revenge, was expanded into his novel Life's Lure. The ineffable "Ancient Memory" carries profound philosophical implications while presenting a strange doppelgänger of sorts. Finally, the memorable Waters—an alcoholic, one-legged, one-eyed frontier printer—is introduced in "The Discarded Fetish," which, with minor changes, became the first half of the novel The Dawn-Builder. In her foreword Neihardt's daughter Hilda Neihardt recalls intimate details incidental to the writing of these stories.

Book excerpt: In the summer of 1960, four of us, students at Atlanta (Michigan) High School, embarked on a pulpwood cutting operation as a way to earn spending money for the coming school year. While scrounging around my dad’s sawmill shed for some tools to use in our enterprise, we found an old sign painted by one of his lumberjacks. It read, “CAN’T HARDLY LUMBER COMPANY.” Not then realizing how prophetic it would be, we took the sign for our pulpwood site. Our experiences that summer, mostly humorous in hindsight, provided the grist for several of the stories and vignettes in this volume. Others chronicle Betty Powell’s 1942 joke on the sheriff, Doug King’s barn-raising bee, and the great porcupine hunt of 1956. All provide a glimpse into northern Michigan life as we experienced it back in the day. After graduating from Atlanta (Michigan) High School in 1961, DAN STEVENS earned B.S. and M.A. degrees from The University of Michigan and a Juris Doctor from T.M. Cooley Law School. He returned to Montmorency County as a businessman and lawyer and represented northeastern Michigan in the Michigan House of Representatives for two terms. Later he served as a policy coordinator for the Florida Governor and was the County Attorney for Hendry County, Florida, over thirteen years. He and his wife Sarah now split their time between Atlanta, Michigan, and Tallahassee, Florida.
