Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial Day, May Thirtieth, 1910 Not to glorify war nor the heroes of war was Memorial Day set apart. It was rather to impress upon us and our children the terrible price which our permanent peace has cost, and to keep constantly before us the picture of havoc and sacrifice wrought by an appeal to arms. But, while our dread and hatred of war should increase with every telling of the story which the day recalls, its proper observance should also in crease our respect and devotion for these peace-loving men and women who, with great reluctance, dared to choose the strife of war rather than 'the repose of dishonor; who hated war not less than we and whose love 'for peace was none the less, but who hated wrong and national disgrace 'more than they hated war, and who loved right and national honor -more than an unstable and dishonorable peace. Therefore let no one think that these soldiers whose memory we honor lusted for the blood s-of their fellow men or took comfort in the plunder of homes and the destruction of cities. They, far more vividly than we, saw the pity and the agony of it all, and, on battle - field and camping ground, longed anxiously for the dawn of peace. Thus, it is, that war may become its own worst enemy and its great soldiers our best heralds of peace. It was Ulysses S. Grant, the great soldier of the greatest war of all times, who wrote, Let us have peace. 'was this a chance sentence that dropped from his pen? Did the thought first occur to him after all opportunities for fighting were over? N o. It was his firm conviction, his heartfelt desire, born with him into the world, deepened by the dread and anxiety of every battle, burned into his soul by the fire of conflict and slaughter. We are, therefore, most fortunate that in honoring him as a great soldier, we are also honoring him as a great prophet of peace. And in thus showing our respect for our great soldier and commander, we shall also show our respect to all those brave men whose courage and devotion made the name of Grant worthy of our honor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial Day: May Thirtieth, 1921 Here I am at that little spot I've come so many thousand miles to find, and if my letter is hard to read you'll understand, for the tears are streaming down my face, as I write in a strange mixture of emotions. I am Sitting at the foot of his little white cross, nicely painted. I've said my Rosary and strewed his sleeping place With poppies and a few other flowers. I've taken a picture of it for you, and Will take others during the next few days when I come It is very quiet here - nothing to be heard but the sound of the skylarks, and they sing all the time. The cemetery is on a little slope and stretches before me, row after row of little White crosses, with an American flag floating high over them all. It is lovely! There are flower beds on the Sides, but on the graves them selves there is only grass or cut flowers; so that all are alike. They face the East, these men of ours, and I can imagine how the early rays of the rising sun strike the shining faces of the crosses, and how at sunset the last beams throw the shadows of this symbol over the resting places of our lads, with the arms outstretched as if covering them forever and ever in peace. And I am so glad to be here. I just sat down on the earth at the foot of his grave, and I thought and thought. I am sad - I am happy I am rested - just being here, and you would be too. It was hard to part with him, so I am sad. But he died as a brave soldier should and as he would have chosen to go, and for the flag, so I'm glad. And in this beautiful, quiet spot, so calm, so peaceful, so pretty, the busy World seems far away, and its troubles and turmoil seem of little account, so I am rested and contented. Seeing this place as I do, I am more convinced than ever that Al would rather stay here, seemingly still in service with his men, row after row of them, the most striking monument we could ever erect to our beloved country, and the part she played in the war. On the right, as you approach the cemetery, runs a road; on the left is a lovely field of grain, and all around runs a border of poppies. I put some on his grave, and shall press one that nestled close to his little cross, as I took the picture. I did not look for any of the other graves today - this day was just Al's, but the next time I come I'll find the others and take pictures of them for their folks at home. After angry Protestants tossed three representatives of the Holy Roman Empire out the window of the royal castle in Prague, world war spread from Bohemia with relentless abandon, drawing powers from Spain to Sweden into a nightmarish world of famine, disease, and seemingly unstoppable destruction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the centenary of the Great War approaches, citizens worldwide are reflecting on the history, trauma, and losses of a war-torn twentieth century. It is in remembering past wars that we are at once confronted with the profound horror and suffering of armed conflict and the increasing elusiveness of peace. The contributors to Bearing Witness do not presume to resolve these troubling questions, but provoke new kinds of reflection. They explore literature, the arts, history, language, and popular culture to move beyond the language of rhetoric and commemoration provided by politicians and the military. Adding nuance to discussions of war and peace, this collection probes the understanding and insight created in the works of musicians, dramatists, poets, painters, photographers, and novelists, to provide a complex view of the ways in which war is waged, witnessed, and remembered. A compelling and informative collection, Bearing Witness sheds new light on the impact of war and the power of suffering, heroism and memory, to expose the human roots of violence and compassion. Contributors include Heribert Adam (Simon Fraser University), Laura Brandon (Carleton University), Mireille Calle-Gruber (Université La Sorbonne Nouvelle), Janet Danielson (Simon Fraser University), Sandra Djwa (emeritus, Simon Fraser University), Alan Filewod (University of Guelph), Sherrill Grace (University of British Columbia), Patrick Imbert (University of Ottawa), Tiffany Johnstone (PhD Candidate, University of British Columbia), Martin Löschnigg (Graz University), Lauren Lydic (PhD, University of Toronto), Conny Steenman Marcusse (Netherlands), Jonathan Vance (University of Western Ontario), Aritha van Herk (University of Calgary), Peter C. van Wyck (Concordia University), Christl Verduyn (Mount Allison University), and Anne Wheeler (filmmaker).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Ulysses S. Grant is best remembered today as a war-winning general, and he certainly deserves credit for his efforts on behalf of the Union. But has he received too much credit at the expense of other men? Have others who fought the war with him suffered unfairly at his hands? General Grant and the Verdict of History: Memoir, Memory, and the Civil War explores these issues. Professor Frank P. Varney examines Grant’s relationship with three noted Civil War generals: the brash and uncompromising “Fighting Joe” Hooker; George H. Thomas, the stellar commander who earned the sobriquet “Rock of Chickamauga”; and Gouverneur Kemble Warren, who served honorably and well in every major action of the Army of the Potomac before being relieved less than two weeks before Appomattox, and only after he had played a prominent part in the major Union victory at Five Forks. In his earlier book General Grant and the Rewriting of History, Dr. Varney studied the tempestuous relationship between Grant and Union General William S. Rosecrans. During the war, Rosecrans was considered by many of his contemporaries to be on par with Grant himself; today, he is largely forgotten. Rosecrans’s star dimmed, argues Varney, because Grant orchestrated the effort. Unbeknownst to most students of the war, Grant used his official reports, interviews with the press, and his memoirs to influence how future generations would remember the war and his part in it. Aided greatly by his two terms as president, by the clarity and eloquence of his memoirs, and in particular by the dramatic backdrop against which those memoirs were written, our historical memory has been influenced to a degree greater than many realize. It is beyond time to return to the original sources—the letters, journals, reports, and memoirs of other witnesses and the transcripts of courts-martial— to examine Grant’s story from a fresh perspective. The results are enlightening and more than a little disturbing.
