Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial and Biographical Sketches A pleasant dale that lowly lay Between two hills, Whose high heads overplaced, The valley did with cool shade overcast. Through midst thereof a little river rolled, By which there sat a knight with helm unlaced, Himself refreshing with the liquid cold, After his travel long and labors manifold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kirkpatrick Memorial, or Biographical Sketches of Father and Son The present memorial volume is not the result of a sudden thought. It has a history. Declining health induced the Rev. Jacob Kirkpatrick, Jr., to resign, in 1857, the pastoral charge of the Third Presbyterian Church, Trenton, N. J. Both pastor and people saw no hope of his recovery. Many of his friends, sorrowing that they should hear his voice no more in the pulpit, felt that it would be a consolation, if he might still preach to them through the press. They requested the privilege of publishing a small volume of his sermons. He modestly declined, shrinking, as he had ever done, from publicity. In now publishing a few of his sermons, no violence is done to his last wishes. It is true, that while lingering at his father's house, waiting for the Heavenly call, he requested that his manuscripts might be burned. But his father interposed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University Memorial: Biographical Sketches of Alumni of the University of Virginia Who Fell in the Confederate War; Five Volumes in One NO apology, it is believed, will be required for the publica tion of the university memorial. The people for whose eye it is intended do not believe that the sword is the arbiter of right, nor have they ceased to cherish the principles which thev made so gigantic an effort to maintain. They are not ashamed of their kinsmen who fell in the great Confederate struggle, and who, sleeping now by mountain and river, in forest and field, in glen and dale, have bequeathed to them as a proud heritage the glory which their heroism achieved. Though poor and oppressed, the Southern people still have - if only this a wealth of affection to lavish upon their dead: too poor to raise but here and there the costly marble shaft, they are yet rich in the highest and holiest offerings of the heart. They give honor themselves: they would that all might give it. When in the soft days of spring they go, men, matrons, maidens and trooping children, with garlands for their graves, they greet with hearty God - speed him who can bring but a single blossom even thus will they welcome this offering to their memory - this wreath of cypress and laurel and oak, fash Ioned by many hands for the brow of the grand Old Mother that sits mourning for her martyred children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial Record of Licking County, Ohio: Containing Biographical Sketches of Representative Citizens of the County, Together With Biographies and Portraits of All the Presidents of the United States The greatest of English historians, Macaulay, and one of the most brilliant writers if the present century, has said: "The history of a country is best told in a record of the lives of its people." In conformity with this idea the Portrait and Memorial Record of this county has been prepared. Instead of going to musty records, and taking therefrom dry statistical matter that can be appreciated by but few, our corps of writers have gone to the people, the men and women who have, by then enterprise and industry, brought the county to rank second to none among those comprising this great and noble State, and from their lips have the story of their life struggles. No more interesting or instructive matter could be presented to an intelligent public. In this volume will be found a record of many whose lives are worthy the imitation of coming generations. It tells how some, commencing life in poverty, by industry and economy have accumulated wealth. It tells how others, with limited advantages for securing an education, have become learned men and women, with an influence extending throughout the length and breadth of the land. It tells of men who have risen from the lower walks of life to eminence as statesmen, and whose names have become famous. It tells of those in every walk in life who have striven to succeed, and records how that success has usually crowned their efforts. It tells also of many, very many, who, not seeking the applause of the world, have pursued "the even tenor of their way," content to have it said of them as Christ said of the woman performing a deed of mercy - "they have done what they could." It tells how that many in the pride and strength of young manhood left the plow and the anvil, the lawyers office and the counting-room, left every trade and profession, and at their country's call went forth valiantly "to do or die," and how through their efforts the Union was restored and peace once more reigned in the land. In the life of every man and of every woman is a lesson that should not be lost upon those who follow after. Coming generations will appreciate this volume and preserve it as a sacred treasure, from the fact that it contains so much that would never find its way into public records, and which would otherwise be inaccessible. Great care has been taken in the compilation of the work and every opportunity possible given to those represented to insure correctness in what has been written, and the publishers flatter themselves that they give to their readers a work with few errors of consequence. In addition to the biographical sketches, portraits of a number of representative citizens are given. The faces of some, and biographical sketches of many, will be missed in this volume. For this the publishers are not to blame. Not having a proper conception of the work, some refused to give the information necessary to compile a sketch, while others were indifferent. Occasionally some member of the family would oppose the enterprise, and on account of such opposition the support of the interested one would be withheld. In a few instances men could never be found, though repeated calls were made at their residence or place of business. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketches of Eminent American Statesmen: With Speeches, Addresses and Letters The public are indebted for this volume to her, who, for many years was the devoted wife, the liv ing helpmate of its distinguished author, and this fact lends a pathetic interest to the work itself. Mrs. Perry, though advanced in years, and bowed down by a great grief, assumed the task of compiling and arranging for publication the writings of her husband, and no tribute to the memory of the dead patriot and statesman could be more appropriate, or more touching than this offered by her loving heart. No monument to perpetuate his name and his fame could so arouse the universal sympathy of our people as does this simple memorial of her devotion to him and of her reverence for his memory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Relics of Genius: Visit to the Last Homes of Poets, Painters, and Players With Biographical Sketches However simple the memorial raised above the poet, it will attract more grateful attention than the costlier tomb by which it may be surrounded. Though the pedigree Of the minstrel have no historic charm, the cold curiosity excited by the rich mausoleum will give place to warm and genial feeling at the shrine of the bard, whose stores of wisdom, clothed with the richness of language, were bequeathed to us as an inheritance; and we linger around his tomb as though it were that of one we had known and loved. The grave may long since have closed upon his lineaments, but his voice is still heard, and the intercourse between him and posterity will be ever new. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Jersey Conference Memorial: Containing Biographical Sketches of All Its Deceased Members, Including Those Who Have Died in the Newark Conference Among the honored names that adorn the ministerial list Of the M. E. Church only a few are entitled to greater prominence than that Of Thomas Morrell. Very few can more safely be set forth as examples for imitation, or reproduced in the hearts and lives of succeeding generations. His fallen mantle may well be coveted by his sons in the ministry. And if biography teaches history by example, that of such a man clothes its lessons with a halo of light, and invests them with an evil restraining and good stimulating impulse.
