Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorabilia of George B. Cheever, D.D: Late Pastor of the Church of the Puritans, Union Square, New York, and of His Wife, Elizabeth Wetmore Cheever, in Verse and Prose The writer of this sketch has frequently heard his discourses referred to by men now far in the vale of years, as having made a powerful impres sion upon their minds. Conscience and Christ were his recurring themes; and his appeals to innate ideas and intuitions, with reasonings from the nature of things, made his hearers solemn and thoughtful over themselves, and given to feel ing after a Saviour, if haply they might find him. Settled in a city where Unitarianism was pre dominant, he early engaged with enthusiasm in defence of the faith once delivered to the saints, beginning with an address at the religious celebra tion of the Fourth of July in Salem, entitled, Worldly Principles and Maxims as they Appear in the Light of Divine Truth. It is an interesting psychological fact that this wide-reaching address contains in embryo the thoughts and principles of many subsequent dis courses ou the temperance, anti-slavery, auti popery, Sabbath, social, and political reforms. Book Synopsis Dictionary of Early American Philosophers by : John R. Shook
Download or read book Dictionary of Early American Philosophers written by John R. Shook and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 1252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Early American Philosophers, which contains over 400 entries by nearly 300 authors, provides an account of philosophical thought in the United States and Canada between 1600 and 1860. The label of "philosopher" has been broadly applied in this Dictionary to intellectuals who have made philosophical contributions regardless of academic career or professional title. Most figures were not academic philosophers, as few such positions existed then, but they did work on philosophical issues and explored philosophical questions involved in such fields as pedagogy, rhetoric, the arts, history, politics, economics, sociology, psychology, medicine, anthropology, religion, metaphysics, and the natural sciences. Each entry begins with biographical and career information, and continues with a discussion of the subject's writings, teaching, and thought. A cross-referencing system refers the reader to other entries. The concluding bibliography lists significant publications by the subject, posthumous editions and collected works, and further reading about the subject.
Book Synopsis Executing Democracy by : Stephen J. Hartnett
Download or read book Executing Democracy written by Stephen J. Hartnett and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eye-opening and well-researched companion to the first volume of Executing Democracy enters the death-penalty discussion during the debates of 1835 and 1843, when pro-death penalty Calvinist minister George Barrell Cheever faced off against abolitionist magazine editor John O’Sullivan. In contrast to the macro-historical overview presented in volume 1, volume 2 provides micro-historical case studies, using these debates as springboards into the discussion of the death penalty in America at large. Incorporating a wide range of sources, including political poems, newspaper editorials, and warring manifestos, this second volume highlights a variety of perspectives, thus demonstrating the centrality of public debates about crime, violence, and punishment to the history of American democracy. Hartnett’s insightful assessment bears witness to a complex national discussion about the political, metaphysical, and cultural significance of the death penalty.
Book Synopsis Hard To Do by : Kelli María Korducki
Download or read book Hard To Do written by Kelli María Korducki and published by Coach House Books. This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Jane Austen to Taylor Swift, a look at the surprising politics of romantic love and its dissolution. Whatever the underlying motives – be they love, financial security, or mere masochism – the fact is that getting involved in a romantic partnership is emotionally, morally, and even politically fraught. In Hard To Do, Kelli María Korducki turns a Marxist lens on the relatively short history of romantic partnership, tracing how the socio-economic dynamics between men and women have transformed the ways women conceive of domestic partnership. With perceptive, reported insights on the ways marriage and divorce are legislated, the rituals of twentieth-century courtship, and contemporary practices for calling it off, Korducki reveals that, for all women, choosing to end a relationship is a radical action with very limited cultural precedent.
