Book excerpt: This edition in four volumes is a record of Napoleon's last years spent on the island of Saint Helena, documented by comte de Las Cases, Napoleons servant and unofficial secretary in exile. Las Cases began his journal on June 20, 1815, two days after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, and continued it until his expulsion from St. Helena on orders of the island's governor, Hudson Lowe, at the end of the following year. The core of the work transcribes Las Cases' near-daily conversations with the former Emperor on his life, his career, his political philosophy, and the conditions of his exile. The work entered the popular imagination as something like Napoleon's own personal and political testament, and as such became a founding text in the development of the Napoleon cult and the ideology of Bonapartism.

Book excerpt: Before the shattering of the Napoleonic empire in 1815, Count Las Cases had served loyally for many years in the council of state. However, his most important service was to come after he followed his Emperor into exile on St. Helena. During his time with Napoleon on the “Rock in the Atlantic”, he was to write down all that he heard from the Emperor’s mouth, as clear a stream of his thoughts and reminiscences as were ever recorded. He was to eventually publish these entries as the “Memoirs of the life...”, also known as the Mémorial de St. Hélène. They stand as a classic not just of the history of Napoleon’s times, but also of the history of the first year of his banishment. Ranging from his earliest days in Corsica to the ranging battlefields of his career, Napoleon speaks through these pages as in no other of the sources left to us today. Essential reading and the birth of the Napoleonic legend. Author — Las Cases, Emmanuel-Auguste-Dieudonné, comte de, 1766-1842. Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in 1855, New York, by Red Field. Original Page Count – 400 pages. Illustrations — 4.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life, Exile, and Conversations of the Emperor Napoleon, Vol. 4 The Emperor, provoked by such disgraceful usage and such gratuitous insults, opens his mind without reserve to Sir Hudson Lowe; his words know no restraint; he frees himself for ever from his odious presence, and declares that he never will See him again. The most unworthy proceeding of the English ministers, said the Emperor to him, is not to have sent me here, but to have delivered me into your hands. I complained of the admiral your predecessor; but he at least had a heart! You are a disgrace to your nation, and your name will for ever be a stain upon its character! This Governor, the Emperor would frequently say to 'us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life, Exile, and Conversations, of the Emperor Napoleon, Vol. 2: With Portraits and Numerous Other Embellishments Island of Elba was not acquiesced in, that every one did not perceive that my reign was desirable and necessary for the balance and repose of Europe! But kings and people both feared me; they were wrong, and may pay dearly for it. I returned a new man; they could not believe it; they could not imagine that a man might have sufficient strength of mind to alter his character, or to bend to the power of circumstances. I had, however, given proofs of this, and some pledges to the same effect. Who is ignorant that I am not a man for half measures? I should have been as sincerely the monarch of the constitution and of peace, as I had been of abso lute sway and great enterprises. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1811, twelve young men were chosen among the families in the Emperors personal service to serve as ushers in his apartments. My mother, attached to the household of the King of Rome as first nurse to the prince, requested this favour for me from the grand chamberlain, the Count de Montesquiou, and it was granted.Louis-Joseph Marchands intimate memoir of his time as Napoleons valet is the last of the significant Napoleonic manuscripts to be translated into English and a unique and precious insight into the last days of Napoleons Imperial project.Serving alongside the Emperor from the apex of his reign and through his eventual demise, Marchand depicts, in remarkable detail, the Russian campaign, the campaigns of Germany and France, Napoleons exile to Elba and subsequent escape, his defeat at Waterloo.Friend and confidante to the leader, Marchand was beside him at the Tuileries during the Hundred Days, and he was present to hear Napoleons last words, France my son the army on the island of St Helena. This sincere and authentic testimony from a man with nothing to hide, nothing to apologise for is both a meticulous historical record and a fresh personal perspective on Napoleon. In this work, Tulard remarks in his preface, the Emperor speaks freely. Listen..Marchand presents the somewhat familiar history of the Emperor's decline as completely new territory through conversations, fond stories and personal encounters'.'Marchand's memoirs, republished in English for the first time in two decades, represent a truly irreplaceable contribution to Napoleonic scholarship. Beyond the Emperor as commander and conqueror, Marchand, from his privileged vantage point, illuminates Napoleon the man in rich and absorbing detail.' - John H Gill
