Notorious at the time of publication for the graphic sex scenes which populate many of the book's passages, Fanny Hill nevertheless would gain regard as one of the first pornographic novels ever published. When Britain's obscenity laws were struck down during the 1960s, the book was republished and introduced to new audiences legitimately. Fanny Hill has the distinct of being intermittently banned, with the author and various possessors of the text prosecuted. However over the centuries the book endured and today stands as part of England's literary pantheon. It was only due to the mass piracy of the text, and its reputation as an explicit, underground book depicting sexual activity, that the memoirs of Fanny Hill attained an enduring notoriety which saw it survive fully intact to the modern day.

Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure (popularly known as Fanny Hill, an anglicisation of the Latin mons veneris, mound of Venus) is an erotic novel by English novelist John Cleland first published in London in 1748. Written while the author was in debtors' prison in London, it is considered "the first original English prose pornography, and the first pornography to use the form of the novel". It is one of the most prosecuted and banned books in history. The novel was published in two instalments, on 21 November 1748 and in February 1749, by Fenton Griffiths and his brother Ralph under the name "G. Fenton". There has been speculation that the novel was at least partly written by 1740, when Cleland was stationed in Bombay as a servant of the British East India Company. Initially, there was no governmental reaction to the novel. However, in November 1749, a year after the first instalment was published, Cleland and Ralph Griffiths were arrested and charged with "corrupting the King's subjects." In court, Cleland renounced the novel and it was officially withdrawn.

By 'clandestine' is meant books whose publishers and printers attempt to hide their identities, usually by offering title pages whose misleading places and dates of publication may shock and amuse, but which always aim to mystify. Using internal and external evidence, an attempt is made to establish who were the printers, booksellers and publishers, English and Continental, involved in this trade.
