Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of British Generals Distinguished During the Peninsular War, Vol. 1 of 2 Many differences of Opinion will probably be ex pressed as to the judgment displayed in the present selection. Some readers may say, why is this General preferred, and that General omitted? The answer is, that it was necessary, to make a limit, and that the Work is offered, not as comprising the whole, but as merely a small cohort from the distinguished band. It will be easy to add to the list if more should be required. Fourteen generals of repute are included in this list. One only of the number was what may be termed old Sir Thomas Graham - and be was only sixty when he fought and Won, with marvellous promptitude and audacity, the Battle of Barrosa. The rest were in the prime vigour of their days, with strength and activity of body which seconded the energy of the mind. Without this happy combina tion of mental and physical attributes, the duties of a general in the field will hang heavily on him who has to perform them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of British Generals Distinguished During the Peninsular War, Vol. 2 of 2 Of Ciudad rodrigo, Badajos, and St. Sebastian, has animated the stormers Of Sebastopol. We have seen that want Of practice is not accompanied by any deficiency in noble daring. There is much in the career of Sir Thomas Picton for the young soldier to study with ad vantage. His rise was slow; he encountered many dif ficulties; he was the subject Of a violent persecution, which for a time cast a cloud upon his name and pros peets; by steady perseverance he surmounted Opposition. Book excerpt: Although biographies of Duke of Wellington abound, there few biographies of the generals that fought alongside him and executed his orders (or in some cases disobeyed them). The author John William Cole was well placed to provide the details of their lives being a long serving soldier in the British Army; his portraits are full of descriptive detail, without being too biased, he discusses the contentious issues as well as the victories they achieved. From the fiery, foul-mouthed Picton, respected but not loved by his men, to the quiet dignified “Daddy” Hill, who was adept at taking care of his own troops as well as surprising the French; the British generals were a diverse group worthy of individual attention that the author gave them. This volume chronicles the lives of No. VIII. — SIR THOMAS PICTON. No. IX. — LORD LYNEDOCH. No. IX. — EARL OF HOPETOUN. No. X. — LORD HILL. No. XII. — MAJOR-GENERAL LE MARCHANT. No. XII. — MAJOR-GENERAL ROSS. No. XIII. — SIR EDWARD PAKENHAM. Author – John William Cole (????-1870)

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This memoir is a masterly narrative by a participant at the very centre of British decision-making during the entire Second World War. Major General ‘Pug’ Ismay was appointed secretary of the Committee of Imperial Defence in July 1938 and from there became, in May 1940, Churchill’s senior military assistant and an additional member of the Chiefs of Staff Committee. Officially, his role was the leadership of the office of the minister of defence. Churchill was by then both prime minister and minister of defence and continued in these twin roles throughout the war. Ismay saw himself as Churchill’s ‘agent’ and was once flippantly described as his ‘Eminence Khaki’. Ismay was in a unique position to observe Churchill, who became a close confidante. Ismay has been praised by several highly-placed sources for his achievements in diplomacy and man-management during his Army service. His tact and charm kept the potential friction between the chiefs-of-staff and their political masters entirely controlled. His ability to ride the sometimes wild swings in Churchill’s temperament, yet still bring to committees the correct interpretation and thrust of Churchill’s views, was highly valued. This book is a masterpiece of prose. It is a remarkable product of its time and is in no way self-indulgent. It lacks military jargon and acronyms. It is full of interesting and humorous anecdotes and provides an excellent account of many aspects of Churchill’s non-public persona. It contains a single monotone plate of the author as well as three organisational diagrams and four maps. Not only military historians, but anyone with an interest in British history from the 1920s to the 1950s, would be greatly satisfied with it.”—Bruce Short RUSI Journal

Book Synopsis Memories Of Forty-Eight Years’ Service [Illustrated Edition] by : General Sir Horace Lockwood Smith-Dorrien
Download or read book Memories Of Forty-Eight Years’ Service [Illustrated Edition] written by General Sir Horace Lockwood Smith-Dorrien and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The memoirs of a veteran general of the British army who fought through the heat of the South African kopjes and plains to the mud, rain and misery at Ypres. Illustrated with 11 photographs and 27 maps and plans. He fought in many of the Imperial wars in Africa, and was distinguished as one of only five British officers to escape the utter slaughter at the battle of Isandlwana in 1878 during the Zulu War. His enduring modern fame rests on his achievements during the First World War, when he was selected to command one of the two corps of the small British Expeditionary Force in 1914 by Lord Kitchener, firmly believing that Smith-Dorrien would stand up to the commander Sir John French. As the B.E.F. struggled back through Belgium in the face of German forces that greatly outnumbered their own troops in 1914, the strain on the men began to show; they thought that they had outfought the Germans at the battle of Mons, but physically they could not fight and outmarch their foes. Seeing the tired and resentful expressions on his men’s faces, Smith-Dorrien came to a fateful decision: the safe retreat of the footsore B.E.F. could only be carried out if the Germans were slowed down. In defiance of his orders from Sir John French to keep going, he gathered as many of his soldiers as could stand and fought a brilliant rearguard action at Le Cateau, now regarded as pivotal in saving the B.E.F. from piecemeal destruction. Castigated in public and in private military circles for his decision at the time, he accelerated his downfall by his forthright attitude to his superior, Sir John French. After pointing out the flaws in French’s wasteful tactics following a particularly disastrous counterattack at Ypres, Smith-Dorrien had gone too far and was sent home under the excuse of “ill-health”, never to hold a field command again. His memoirs are detailed, exciting and a good balance to the highly inventive writings of Sir John French.

Book Synopsis Memoirs and Correspondence of Major-General Sir William Nott by : Sir William Nott
Download or read book Memoirs and Correspondence of Major-General Sir William Nott written by Sir William Nott and published by London, Hurst and Blackett. This book was released on 1854 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir William Nott (1782-1845) was an army officer in the East India Company who commanded British and Anglo-Indian forces in the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42). He was born into a farm family of modest means in Glamorganshire, Wales, and received a limited elementary education. He embarked for India in 1800, and received a commission in the army of the East India Company. For many years he commanded a succession of native infantry regiments. Throughout his military career he appreciated the military qualities of the sepoy (Indian soldiers serving in the army of the East India Company), which he compared favorably with those of the British soldier. A colonel before the Anglo-Afghan War began, Nott soon was promoted to general. He commanded British and native troops in several successful engagements and on January 13, 1842, was appointed commander of all British and Anglo-Indian troops in Lower Afghanistan and Sind. He won a major victory over Afghan forces near Ghazni on August 30, 1842, which led to the capture of Kabul and ultimately termination of the war. After service as resident at the court of Lucknow, Nott returned to England, where within two years he died. This book was compiled posthumously by J.H. Stocqueler, the author of several books of biography and British military history, using documents in the possession of Nott's daughters. Volume two of the work has a long appendix containing documents relevant to Nott's activities in Afghanistan, some by Nott himself but most by other officers. Nott is regarded by historians as by far the best British general in the Anglo-Afghan War.
