Book excerpt: When Deborah Gold and her husband signed up to foster parent in their rural mountain community, they did not foresee that it would lead to a roller-coaster fifteen years of involvement with a traumatized yet resilient birth family. They fell in love with Michael (a toddler when he came to them), yet they had to reckon with the knowledge that he could leave their lives at any time. In Counting Down, Gold tells the story of forging a family within a confounding system. We meet social workers, a birth mother with the courage to give her children the childhood she never had herself, and a father parenting from prison. We also encounter members of a remarkable fellowship of Appalachian foster parents—gay, straight, right, left, evangelical, and atheist—united by love, loss, and quality hand-me-downs. Gold’s memoir is one of the few books to deliver a foster parent’s perspective (and, through Michael’s own poetry and essays, that of a former foster child). In it, she shakes up common assumptions and offers a powerfully frank and hopeful look at an experience often portrayed as bleak.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In three previous books, through a selection of prose poems, the author shared bits and pieces of a life, one comprised of complete abandonment by a mother and the disconnected roles played by extended family members, a life that eventually led to being placed in foster care. Now, for the first time, with In the Care of Strangers, he tells the entire story of what such a life was actually like. In this five-part memoir, dependent on the seven deadly sins, the author tries to reconstruct a painful journey of coming of age under the literal care of strangers and the individuals that made up the foster homes and hospitals that would help to shape a young man’s life, certainly a difficult life, riddled with abuse from the start (Malice) and ending with greed and envy in a fourth and final home. He finds and develops pride in himself while recuperating from a paralysis. How this young man attempts to survive the experiences of foster care while also having to contend with a disability, and still managing to try to simply achieve graduation from high school, with a goal toward college, is a testament to a human spirit beyond measure. This riveting story, told through an innocent, almost childlike voice of a boy shocked into care, then as an older man who has come to terms with his situation (The Unclaimed), and finally through the poetry, should be taken as an inspiration for many.

Book excerpt: In this engaging life story, spanning seventeen moves and twelve schools by the age of sixteen, Dante shares her dreams and fears - taking us from her loving family farm in Virginia to the wacky Driftwood Shack in Florida and beyond. We travel with her to the outskirts of an Indian reservation, on to a movie location in Tucson, and to a runaway teenage girl's life in downtown Los Angeles, California . . . eventually to the mega-mansions of Silicon Valley. The only reliable constant in this girl's life was change - new homes, new families, new experiences - ever adapting to new lifestyles. Amid the chaos, long-term relationships were difficult to form. But Dante was full of love, and wanted to be loved. From her artistic father and loving Nana to the sometimes cruel caregivers, and on to foster homes that would become her temporary sanctuaries, there was never a dull moment. And along the way, Dante's humor overcame adversity and restored healing and faith in the face of hardship and loss. But this is a story of hope - a metamorphosis of character and spirit, a journey of survival through a dim tunnel of self-doubt and unworthy feelings, and out into the beckoning light of a blossoming future. With determination and perseverance she transcended the limitations of the past - discovering faith and trust in the loving influence of those who cared along the way. With anticipation we follow Dante out onto the ledge. And we jump . . . and with her we learn how to fly.

Book excerpt: While we were preparing for our last foster child to leave us, I made a comment to that foster child that I should write a book about my experiences. She said, “Then why don’t you!” Although I had thought about it for quite some time prior to that, I never thought that I would actually sit down and extend this opportunity to others. This information is for anyone who has entertained the thought of helping children. This is a great desire to have. A warm heart is sure to follow the success of any given occasion. This is a story about foster care and adoption. It’s not just any story; this is a true story. This is a story of love, diligence, sacrifice, kindness, and willingness to be selfless. This is my story. In the life of every child, they should be able to imagine hopes, dreams, goals, and ways how to be able to achieve them. Instead, I have learned that survival techniques tend to take the place of such thoughts if you are a foster child. Dreams can be crushed, and reality becomes an everyday living nightmare. When this happens, what then? Children are taken into foster homes every day. Foster parents willingly give their time and talents to help those in need. This achievement I believe needs to be a built-in passion. You are not paid for your services as a foster parent. You are, however, reimbursed for your kindness. This is not a get-rich-quick plan. If so, there would be a lot of rich foster parents out there, including us! A passion for life has to be restored in children when such difficult situations arise as a result of inhumane behavior. It is hoped that this information will increase your decision to want to adopt, to help those in need. You, in turn, will find the peace and contentment that your restless heart so richly deserves. These children come from all walks of life, from every background imaginable to mankind. And some backgrounds that aren’t imaginable too. They come from all types of situations. Not only will your eyes be opened to a different world of a reality beyond your comprehensible grasp but you will also gain an appreciation for what you have rather than for what you want to have. This information is to help you gain a knowledge of the world of foster care. The questions that have intrigued your mind for years as you have watched your neighbors bring in children that are not theirs can now be answered. Although it is not rude to ask foster parents questions of interest in your behalf, you won’t have to worry about daring to ask them questions anymore. This information is not only intended for your education but also to help you maintain your sanity while caring for foster children in your home or the worry of what others might think about what you are doing as a foster parent. This is not an easy thing to do. I don’t believe from the bottom of my heart that it was ever meant to be. However, I believe that there are certain people on this earth who care about doing this work simply because they have the kind of heart that can handle it. Not all people can. There was actually a time in our lives when our parents asked us to not do foster care anymore. They had seen so many children and had witnessed what they had been through so many times that they just couldn’t take it anymore. It takes a certain kind of person to be able to open your heart and your home to help out a stranger and to be able to learn to love them while they are with you and then in turn to be able to miss them when they leave your home. You know if you are that kind of person because you will feel it in your heart. Should you choose to take this step, there will be a support system there for you to help you along your way. Not everyone will understand why you have chosen to do this. However, you will know in your heart if it is the right thing for you to do. If you feel you can handle what these children have been through and that you won’t drop your jaw from shock when you hear each and eve

Book excerpt: It Had To Happen: Memoirs From A Foster Child tells the harrowing story of Tameena, a teenage girl who endured a traumatic journey through the foster care system after being taken away from her abusive biological family. After experiencing physical abuse at the hands of her mother and being separated from her beloved sisters "Lyfe, Sophia, and Sephora," Tameena is placed in a foster home, where she finally finds safety and develops a genuine bond with her new family. Tameena's sense of security is shattered when she becomes a victim of sexual abuse by her foster Uncle, P. Terrified of losing her new found family and desperate to protect them, Tameena's unimaginable pain and anguish in silence by the weight of her traumatic experiences become increasingly difficult to bear. Overwhelmed by her secrets and suffering, she confides in her social worker, who takes immediate action to protect her. Tameena is placed in a new foster home, hoping for a fresh start and a chance at a brighter future. As the legal process unfolds, Tameena finds the strength to testify against Uncle P in court, facing the family she once believed to be her refuge. Through these distressing times, to cope with her emotional turmoil, Tameena turns to unhealthy habits, including smoking, alcohol consumption, and burying herself in work and church activities. However, despite her attempts to mask her pain, the scars from her abuse continue to haunt her.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of The Promise of a Pencil and Kisses from Katie comes an inspirational memoir by the founder of Comfort Cases about his turbulent childhood in the foster care system and the countless obstacles and discrimination he endured in adopting his four children. Rob Scheer never thought that he would be living the life he is now. He’s happily married to his partner and love of his life, he’s the father of four beautiful children, and he’s the founder of an organization that makes life better for thousands of children in the foster care system. But life wasn’t always like this. Growing up in an abusive household before his placement in foster care, Rob had all the odds stacked against him. Kicked out of his foster family’s home within weeks after turning eighteen—with a year left of high school to go—he had to resort to sleeping in his car and in public bathrooms. He suffered from drug addiction and battled with depression, never knowing when his next meal would be or where he would sleep at night. But by true perseverance, he was able to find his own path and achieve his wildest dreams. “A heartwarming, hopeful memoir brimming with humanitarianism and compassion” (Kirkus Reviews), Rob’s story provides a glimpse into what it’s like to grow up in the foster care system, and sheds necessary light on the children who are often treated without dignity. Both a timely call to action and a courageous and candid account of life in the foster care system, A Forever Family ultimately leaves you with one message: one person can make a difference.

I go through all the different emotions that a foster or adoptive parent may experience. I hope to better prepare them and, maybe, inform them enough that they can make wise decisions for their family. I also share some of my stories over the twenty-two years. My sharing may save a child in having a better-prepared foster parent or save a parent from becoming a foster parent. There is a lot of joy in foster parenting, but you are taking on a large responsibility. The more prepared you can be, the better.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE • “A powerful, heartbreaking, necessary masterpiece.”—Cheryl Strayed, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Wild The moving story of what one woman learned from fostering a newborn—about injustice, about making mistakes, about how to better love and protect people beyond our immediate kin May you always feel at home. After their decision not to have a biological child, Sarah Sentilles and her husband, Eric, decide to adopt via the foster care system. Despite knowing that the system’s goal is the child’s reunification with the birth family, Sarah opens their home to a flurry of social workers who question them, evaluate them, and ultimately prepare them to welcome a child into their lives—even if it means most likely having to give the child back. After years of starts and stops, and endless navigation of the complexities and injustices of the foster care system, a phone call finally comes: a three-day-old baby girl named Coco, in immediate need of a foster family. Sarah and Eric bring this newborn stranger home. “You were never ours,” Sarah tells Coco, “yet we belong to each other.” A love letter to Coco and to the countless children like her, Stranger Care chronicles Sarah’s discovery of what it means to mother—in this case, not just a vulnerable infant but the birth mother who loves her, too. Ultimately, Coco’s story reminds us that we depend on family, and that family can take different forms. With prose that Nick Flynn has called “fearless, stirring, rhythmic,” Sentilles lays bare an intimate, powerful story with universal concerns: How can we care for and protect one another? How do we ensure a more hopeful future for life on this planet? And if we’re all related—tree, bird, star, person—how might we better live?

Book excerpt: "A child never perceives the thought of life without parents, and when it does happen, it can shatter the child's heart and tear down any sense of security. Children in this situation are forced to either die in the tragedy or find a way to live and survive it. I set out to survive..." "Pieces of the Pearl: Memoirs of a Foster Child's Triumphant Transformation" tells the true-life story of Teresa Ann Winton, who invites you to journey into the depths of her soul where a vulnerable and profoundly sad little girl once lived. Teresa's unstable home left her exposed to abuse, poverty, and neglect. Foster care, a system meant to help the helpless, brought even more trauma and loss. But in spite of it all, Teresa forged ahead, refusing to succumb to despair. In this poignant story, the author interlaces poetry and narrative, sharing her joys and sorrows, her triumphs and tears. "Pieces of the Pearl: Memoirs of a Foster Child's Triumphant Transformation" is a search for wholeness and reconciliation, one whose spiritual message of undying faith, hope, and love will leave readers inspired. A story like "Pieces of the Pearl" must be told. The teeming masses of humanity must be exposed to a true story of 'can do.' People must see real faith at worka "a faith that is not ignorant of the ugliness of man, but does not blame that ugliness on God. In the fires of tragedy, people of bitterness or heroism are born, and I am proud to say that I know this hero, Teresa Winton. a "Phil Arnold, Louisville, Kentucky"
