Book Synopsis Engineering in Chalk by : J. A. Lord
Download or read book Engineering in Chalk written by J. A. Lord and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides guidance on engineering in chalk. It describes the chalk's geological setting, its origins, occurrence, its stratigraphy, weathering and geomorphological situations, the material and mechanical properties. The descriptions are supported by a comprehensive set of photographs. It explains recommended schemes for the engineering description and classification of chalk, building on the work presented in CIRIA PR11, 'Foundations in Chalk'. The publication looks at the mechanical and material properties of intact, in-situ and compacted chalk and considers their implications for the design and construction of earthworks, cuttings, retaining walls and anchorages. Major sections deal with the selection and design of shallow and piled foundations. Based on analysis of the results of pile testing, the book makes recommendations for the design and choice of bored, CFA, driven cast-in-place and pre-formed piles in chalk and for estimating shaft and base resistances. Contents:1 Introduction, 2 The engineering geology of chalk, 3 Description and classification of chalk, 4 Mechanical properties of the chalk, 5 Chalk in embankments and fills, 6 Cuttings, retaining structures and anchorages in chalk, 7 Shallow foundations, 8 Piled foundations, 9 Site investigations in chalk, 10 Concluding remarks, References.

Download or read book Karst written by J. N. Jennings and published by Mit Press. This book was released on 2003-02-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rivers going underground, great springs emerging from the ground, independent hollows and basins instead of connecting valleys, deep potholes and vast caves, isolated towerlike hills reminiscent of the unbelievably steep peaks depicted in Chinese paintings—these are some of the distinctive features of karst, the name given to the kinds of country that owe their special characteristics to the unusual degree of solubility of their component rocks in natural waters. The special nature of karst is not only intrinsically interesting; it affects many aspects of life in the areas where it is found—water supplies, agriculture, engineering construction, tourism. There are, then, practical as well as scientific reasons for its study. The dramatic quality of karst landforms has caught the imagination of specialists and laymen alike. This book contains much to stimulate and inform the general reader as well as the undergraduate and high school student for whom it is written. It will be of particular interest to the hydrologist, the speleologist, and the sporting caver and potholer.

Book Synopsis The Earliest Occupation of Europe by : European Science Foundation. Workshop
Download or read book The Earliest Occupation of Europe written by European Science Foundation. Workshop and published by Faculty of Archaeology, University of Leiden. This book was released on 1995 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers arises from a meeting of distinguished scholars at Tautavel in 1993, sponsored by the European Science Fund. The aim of the meeting was to discuss and review the evidence for the earliest occupation of different European regions, from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean and from the United Kingdom to the Russian Plains and including neighbouring areas such as the Caucasus and Northern Africa. Discussion focused on four themes: chronology, environment, industries and subsistence. The central dispute between proponents of the Long chronology (placing the first hominids in Europe almost 2m years ago) and the supporters of a Short chronology (no hominids until 500,000 years ago) is covered in detail. The disputed 1.5m years are crucial to our understanding of how our earliest ancestors adapted to the European environment and this book will be crucial in furthering the debate.
