L’Avertissement (qui est peut-être dû à Khalifa Boubli, secrétaire privé de l’ex-khédive, et signataire de Y Avant-propos) indique que le « texte original » a été réparti en chapitres, suivant les indications que le souverain a lui-même données « dans la marge de son manuscrit », et que des notes de sa main ont été insérées à leur place respective. Mais de cette version première du texte nous ne savons rien. La dactylogramme dont nous disposons a fait l’objet de corrections assez nombreuses effectuées par plusieurs relecteurs, mais apparemment non par le khédive, si l’on compare les écritures aux autographes du souverain. Khalifa Boubli ne donne aucune indication sur la manière dont le texte primitif a été rédigé : on peut supposer qu’il a été dicté.
