Download or read book Girls in French and Francophone Literature and Film written by Daniela Di Cecco and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Girls in French and Francophone Literature and Film is a collection of essays focusing on constructions of girlhood in French and Francophone Literature and Film from the late-Nineteenth to the early-Twenty-First centuries. The volume is firmly anchored at the intersection of French and Francophone studies and the bourgeoning field of girls’ studies. Collectively, the articles demonstrate that girls’ experience, historically viewed as a mere deviation from the “normative” male model, is a product of diverse ideological, cultural and economic factors, and is deserving of its own field of inquiry.

Book Synopsis Philosophical Writings by : Simone de Beauvoir
Download or read book Philosophical Writings written by Simone de Beauvoir and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2005-01-26 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite growing interest in her philosophy, Simone de Beauvoir remains widely misunderstood. She is typically portrayed as a mere intellectual follower of her companion, Jean-Paul Sartre. In Philosophical Writings, Beauvoir herself shows that nothing could be further from the truth. Beauvoir's philosophical work suffers from a lack of English-language translation or, worse, mistranslation into heavily condensed popular versions. Philosophical Writings provides an unprecedented collection of complete, scholarly editions of philosophical texts that cover the first twenty-three years of Beauvoir's career, including a number of recently discovered works. Ranging from metaphysical literature to existentialist ethics, Philosophical Writings brings together diverse elements of Beauvoir's work while highlighting continuities in the development of her thought. Each of the translations features detailed notes and a scholarly introduction explaining its larger significance. Revelatory and long overdue, Philosophical Writings adds to the ongoing resurgence of interest in Beauvoir's thought and to her growing influence on today's philosophical curriculum.
Book Synopsis Jeanne Hyvrard, Wounded Witness by : Helen Vassallo
Download or read book Jeanne Hyvrard, Wounded Witness written by Helen Vassallo and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical responses to Jeanne Hyvrard have generally categorised her as a writer of 'écriture féminine' and/or autobiography, due to salient features of her oeuvre such as the use of first-person narrative, a cyclic writing style, and the quest for a 'female' language. Within these broader considerations, however, a recurrent motif throughout Hyvrard's writing is that of the body, specifically the female body, represented as suffering from different forms of physical/mental illness and emotional/social malaise. It is this primordial aspect of Hyvrard's work, on which surprisingly little critical analysis has been written, that this monograph explores. It has been demonstrated that Hyvrard's works can be studied as a unity as well as individually, given that all of her texts form part of her wider theory. While this theory is often referred to in abstract terms as 'pensée ronde', 'pensée globale' or 'pensée-femme', this study shows that it can be more specifically highlighted as a theory of dis(-)ease (i.e. the intertwining of physical malady and social malaise, medical terms and metaphor), and, particularly, as a social theory of the dis(-)eased female body.

Book Synopsis Three Centuries of Girls' Education by : Mary Anne O'Neil
Download or read book Three Centuries of Girls' Education written by Mary Anne O'Neil and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2022-10-19 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Three Centuries of Girls’ Education, Mary Anne O’Neil offers both an examination and the first English translation of Les Règlemens des religieuses Ursulines de la Congrégation de Paris. Published in 1705, Regulations is the first pedagogical system explicitly designed for the education of girls. It is also one of the few surviving documents describing the day-to-day operations of early Ursuline schools. O’Neil traces the history of the document from the writings of the Italian foundress of the Ursulines, to the establishment of the religious order in Paris in 1612, to the changes in the organization of Ursuline schools in nineteenth-century France, and, finally, to Mother Marie de St. Jean Martin’s spirited defense of the traditional French Ursuline method after World War II. In the eighteenth century, New Orleans Ursulines used the Regulations as a guide to establish their schools and teaching methods. Overall, O’Neil’s history and translation recover a vital source for historians of the early modern era but will also interest scholars in the fields of education history and female religious life.
Book Synopsis New Literary Voices of the Moroccan Diaspora by : Ieme van der Poel
Download or read book New Literary Voices of the Moroccan Diaspora written by Ieme van der Poel and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The highly-charged debate over Morocco’s diasporic minorities in Europe has led to a growing interest in the literary production of these ‘new’ Europeans. This comparative study is the first to discuss together a body of texts, including contemporary Judeo-Moroccan literature, written in French, Spanish, Catalan and Dutch, which have never been studied as a group. Faced with such a variegated field of literary production, the aim of this book is not to tie individual works of literature to their ‘national’ place of origin, but to re-conceptualize the idea of a ‘Moroccan’ literature with regard to the transnational and multilingual experiences from which it arises. Drawing on a wide range of theoretical insights, from Fatima Mernissi’s concept of female subalternity to Abdelmalek Sayad’s principle of the immigrants’ ‘absent’ history, this book allows for the re-evaluation of the relationship between migration and postcolonial literary studies. A careful analysis of the literary techniques used in the texts under scrutiny here highlights their poetic qualities, without bypassing their political relevance with regard to the intercultural relations between Morocco and Europe as they are presently unfolding across the Mediterranean, and beyond.
