Book excerpt: Canadian military history and military matters have not been well represented in general in retrospective bibliographies of Canadian or in international military bibliographies. What has been attempted in this document is a bibliography of published primary sources and secondary works on Canadian military topics, excluding poetry and fiction, covering the period from Confederation to the present. Entries in the bibliography represent printed monographs, books and pamphlets, and serial titles. The prime criteria of inclusion were that the work be chiefly or uniquely both Canadian and military in its contents. Many in-house publications, of the training pamphlet or regulations type, have been included, but only insofar as they tell us something of the armed forces themselves, rather than details of tactical doctrine or of pieces of equipment. Works by or about Canadians serving with the armed forces of other countries have been included, as well as materials relating to the military history of Newfoundland since 1867.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the life of a navy, from its conception in thenineteenth century to its seventy-fifth birthday in 1985. Born in the midst of political controversy, the Royal Canadian Navytraces its roots to conflicting British and Canadian interests duringthe prime ministerships of Sir John A. Macdonald and Sir WilfridLaurier, as well as to Anglo-German naval competition in the earlyyears of the twentieth century. The RCN played a more important role in World War I than hasgenerally been realized and, despite neglect between the wars, rose toa position of some prominence in World War II. Except for ademoralizing period of retrenchment from 1945 to 1949, it thenflourished until the early 1960's, before the twin agonies ofunification and defence cutbacks began to influence itsdevelopment. Total unification of the navy with the army and air force has been aunique Canadian experience. How Canada weathered the transition fromRCN to "Marine Command" is illuminated by the discussions inthis book. The navy appears as a resilient institution in the face ofchange, particularly in the last two decades of its first seventy-fiveyears. This collection of papers by leading authorities in naval historyand defence policy provides a record of Canadian naval problems, thenavy's pragmatic search for solutions, and its prospects for thefuture. The authors open up areas of discussion that will be offundamental importance in the critical years to come.

Download or read book Canada and the Nuclear Arms Race written by Ernie Regehr and published by Lorimer. This book was released on 1983 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1983, this book reports from the middle of the nuclear arms race, when the world's two superpowers, the US and the USSR, were adding increasingly sophisticated weapons to their arsenals, reaching a point where they could effectively wipe each other out many times over. Some of Canada's most distinguished critics of the nuclear arms race examine this drift to annihilation, show how Canada was contributing to it, and explain the policies that Canada could have adopted to encourage the reversal of the arms race.
