Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of Jonathan Letterman, M. D: Surgeon United States Army and Medical Director of the Army of the Potomac In the same year he passed a successful examination by the Army Medical Board in New York City, and was appointed an assistant surgeon in the Army, June 29, 1849. He served in Florida in the campaigns against the Seminole Indians from his appointment until March, 1853; he was then transferred to Fort Ripley, Minnesota, and in May, 1854, marched with troops from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to New Mexico. In that department he served at Fort Defiance in the country of the Navajo Indians, and was engaged in Colonel Loring's expedition against the Gila Apaches. He continued on duty in New Mexico until the autumn of 1858, when he was granted a leave of absence after his service of four years on the frontier. In 1859 he was on duty at Fort Monroe, Virginia, and in the office of the late General Satterlee, United States Army, who then was the Chief Medical Purveyor for the Army, 1860 found him in California, where he was engaged in Major Carleton's expedition against the Pah Ute Indians. In November, 1861, he accompanied troops from California to New York City, and was soon after on duty with the Army of the Potomac. In May, 1862, he was made Medical Director of the Department of West Virginia. He served in this position but a short time, for on June 19th of this year he was assigned to duty as Medical Director of the Army of the Potomac, succeeding Surgeon Charles Tripler, United States Army, who had been nominated by the President of the United States to the important position of Medical Inspector-General of the United States Army. On July 2d he received his promotion as surgeon, to date from April 16, 1862. Dr. Letterman, proceeding to the field of his new duties, arrived at the White House, on the Peninsula, on the 28th June, but, owing to the interruption of communications, was unable to report to General McClellan until July 1st, and was assigned to duty by him on July 4, 1862. The Army of the Potomac was then at Harrison's Landing, on the James River, whither it had retired after the exhausting Peninsula campaign. The service he had seen on the frontier and in Indian expeditions had inured him to the hardships of military life. Book excerpt: A New York Times Best Seller! When Jonathan Letterman was appointed the chief medical officer of the Army of the Potomac, he revolutionized combat medicine over the course of four major battles—Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. He made battlefield survival possible by creating the first organized ambulance corps and a more effective field hospital system. Confronting conditions of squalor, poor nutrition, and rampant disease that left 20 percent of the men unfit to fight, Letterman improved health and combat readiness by pioneering hygiene and diet standards. With stirring accounts of battles and the struggle to invent and supply adequate care during impossible conditions, Surgeon in Blue recounts Letterman’s life from his small-town Pennsylvania beginnings to his trailblazing wartime years and his subsequent career as a wildcatter and the medical examiner of San Francisco. At last, here is the missing portrait of a key figure of Civil War history and military medicine. His principles of battlefield care are still implemented on today’s battlefields and by first responders. Skyhorse Publishing, along with our Arcade, Good Books, Sports Publishing, and Yucca imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs. Our list includes biographies on well-known historical figures like Benjamin Franklin, Nelson Mandela, and Alexander Graham Bell, as well as villains from history, such as Heinrich Himmler, John Wayne Gacy, and O. J. Simpson. We have also published survivor stories of World War II, memoirs about overcoming adversity, first-hand tales of adventure, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Book excerpt: An account of the World War II heroics of the corps that “revolutionized medical care for British troops . . . Most Highly Recommended” (Firetrench). On 28 September 1945, Field Marshal Montgomery expressed his “admiration and high regard to a corps whose contribution to victory has been beyond all calculation.” The Royal Army Medical Corps was active during all engagements in the Second World War. From the defeat in Norway in 1940 to the hell of Dunkirk and the fall of France, from the chaos of the retreat through Greece and Crete to the war’s turning point in the vast deserts of North Africa, from the intensity of D-Day and the Normandy campaign to the reverses at Arnhem and the eventual liberation of the German death camps and Far East prison camps, RAMC personnel were frequently at the heart of the action, risking their lives to provide medical support to a mobile army in a highly mechanized war. For those taken prisoner by the enemy, maintaining the physical and psychological well-being of their fellow captives became an urgent necessity, while for a small number of exceptionally brave and hardy souls, attachment to commando units saw them provide medical support for some of the most daring raids of the war. Nearly 3,000 RAMC doctors and orderlies were killed during the war as a result of enemy action or exposure to dangerous tropical diseases. Using previously unpublished archival material and personal family papers, this book sheds fresh light on the experience of the regulars, volunteers and conscripts who gave expression to the motto of the RAMC: Faithful in Adversity.

Author, journalist, and USS Midway Museum spokesman Scott McGaugh reveals the riveting stories of the men and women who save lives on the front lines in Battlefield Angels, the first book about battlefield medicine in the US military. Told from the point of view of the unsung heroes who slide into bomb craters and climb into blazing ships, this unique look at medicine in the trenches traces the history of the military medical corps and the contributions it has made to America's health, for example, how the military medical corps pioneered the ambulance concept, emergency medevac helicopters, hospital designs, and contagious disease prevention. McGough also details how the military medical corps has adopted medical science discoveries, field tested them in battle, adapted them, and proved their value.
