Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1856 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IX. RICHTER. During the disputes as to Dalton's priority of discovery, it was frequently asserted that his atomic laws were not new, and they were, as is usual in such cases, attributed to various persons. Of these persons, Higgins, in this country, and Richter, in Germany, have been the most prominent. I have endeavoured to show exactly the position of Higgins; I shall do the same with Richter. Higgins came first with clearness and simplicity, uttering a beautiful idea which he failed to follow up; Richter came close after him, with great labour and enthusiasm, filled with a great idea of the study in which he was engaged, and obtained a law which he failed to follow up; he lost himself in complicated theories, having no idea how simple was the truth he sought for. Both were neglected, as happens when men fail to give completeness to their inquiries, even in the eyes of those who study and are willing to learn. Richter's books are--" Anfangsgriinde der Stoechyometrie oder Messkunst Chymischer Elemente." 3 vols. Bresslau und Hirschberg, 1792-4; and " Ueber die Neuern Gegenstiinde der Chymie," 1791-1802. I shall give rather copious extracts from his works, shewing the direction of his inquiries, and the ends he attained. Richter, Vol. I., Preface. " Mathematics includes all those sciences which refer to magnitude, and consequently a science lies more or less in the province of mathematics (geometry), according as it requires the determination of magnitudes. In chemical experiments this truth has often led me to the question, whether and how far chemistry is a part of applied mathematics; and especially in considering the well-known fact, that two neutral salts, when they decompose each other, form again neutral compounds. Book Synopsis John Dalton, 1766–1844 by : A.L. Smyth
Download or read book John Dalton, 1766–1844 written by A.L. Smyth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this second edition of this bibliography contains more than half as many entries again as the original selection of 1966. New sections include an annotated list of surviving apparatus and personal effects, an index of letters and printed extracts of letters, and a current plan of Manchester, as well as one of 1793, showing places with Dalton associations. Annotations are relatively more generous and the number of illustrations almost doubled. Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society was central to Daltons life and researches. It inherited almost all his manuscripts and apparatus; much of the collection was destroyed in 1940.

Book Synopsis History of Wireless by : T. K. Sarkar
Download or read book History of Wireless written by T. K. Sarkar and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-01-17 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Important new insights into how various components and systems evolved Premised on the idea that one cannot know a science without knowing its history, History of Wireless offers a lively new treatment that introduces previously unacknowledged pioneers and developments, setting a new standard for understanding the evolution of this important technology. Starting with the background-magnetism, electricity, light, and Maxwell's Electromagnetic Theory-this book offers new insights into the initial theory and experimental exploration of wireless. In addition to the well-known contributions of Maxwell, Hertz, and Marconi, it examines work done by Heaviside, Tesla, and passionate amateurs such as the Kentucky melon farmer Nathan Stubblefield and the unsung hero Antonio Meucci. Looking at the story from mathematical, physics, technical, and other perspectives, the clearly written text describes the development of wireless within a vivid scientific milieu. History of Wireless also goes into other key areas, including: The work of J. C. Bose and J. A. Fleming German, Japanese, and Soviet contributions to physics and applications of electromagnetic oscillations and waves Wireless telegraphic and telephonic development and attempts to achieve transatlantic wireless communications Wireless telegraphy in South Africa in the early twentieth century Antenna development in Japan: past and present Soviet quasi-optics at near-mm and sub-mm wavelengths The evolution of electromagnetic waveguides The history of phased array antennas Augmenting the typical, Marconi-centered approach, History of Wireless fills in the conventionally accepted story with attention to more specific, less-known discoveries and individuals, and challenges traditional assumptions about the origins and growth of wireless. This allows for a more comprehensive understanding of how various components and systems evolved. Written in a clear tone with a broad scientific audience in mind, this exciting and thorough treatment is sure to become a classic in the field.

Book Synopsis The Tradition of Science by : Leonard C. Bruno
Download or read book The Tradition of Science written by Leonard C. Bruno and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any real understanding of where we stand scientifically today and where we are headed depends to a great extent on an awareness of how we reached those scientific achievements. The increased impact of science and technology on our lives makes such an understanding even more important. For this reason, this book is intended to provide information about the major works of science in the collections of the Library of Congress. These selected works are organized here by traditional scientific discipline and are treated in historical and, generally, chronological order. The contents contain chapters on: (1) astronomy; (2) botany; (3) zoology; (4) medicine; (5) chemistry; (6) geology; (7) mathematics; and (8) physics. A bibliography provides information about particular Library of Congress collections to which a book or manuscript may belong, as well as specific bibliographic information. Title translations are also included. (TW)
