Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mema's house is in the poor barrio Nezahualcoyotl, a crowded urban space on the outskirts of Mexico City where people survive with the help of family, neighbors, and friends. This house is a sanctuary for a group of young, homosexual men who meet to do what they can't do openly at home. They chat, flirt, listen to music, and smoke marijuana. Among the group are sex workers and transvestites with high heels, short skirts, heavy make-up, and voluminous hairstyles; and their partners, young, bisexual men, wearing T-shirts and worn jeans, short hair, and maybe a mustache. Mema, an AIDS educator and the leader of this gang of homosexual men, invited Annick Prieur, a European sociologist, to meet the community and to conduct her fieldwork at his house. Prieur lived there for six months between 1988 and 1991, and she has kept in touch for more than eight years. As Prieur follows the transvestites in their daily activities—at their work as prostitutes or as hairdressers, at night having fun in the streets and in discos—on visits with their families and even in prisons, a fascinating story unfolds of love, violence, and deceit. She analyzes the complicated relations between the effeminate homosexuals, most of them transvestites, and their partners, the masculine-looking bisexual men, ultimately asking why these particular gender constructions exist in the Mexican working classes and how they can be so widespread in a male-dominated society—the very society from which the term machismo stems. Expertly weaving empirical research with theory, Prieur presents new analytical angles on several concepts: family, class, domination, the role of the body, and the production of differences among men. A riveting account of heroes and moral dilemmas, community gossip and intrigue, Mema's House, Mexico's City offers a rich story of a hitherto unfamiliar culture and lifestyle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this compelling account, Knockoff exposes the truth behind the fakes and uncovers the shocking consequences of dealing in counterfeit goods. Travelling across the globe, Tim Phillips shows that counterfeiting isn't a victimless crime; it is an illegal global industry undermining the world's economies. Based on interviews with victims, investigators and the people who sell counterfeits, Knockoff reveals the link between what we see as "innocent" fakes and organized crime. Phillips describes in detail how the counterfeiters' criminal network costs jobs, cripples developing countries, breeds corruption and violence, and kills thousands of people every year. He shows that by turning a blind eye to the problem, we become accomplices to theft, extortion and murder.

Orphaned as a child after her parents’ murder, and afflicted with hallucinations at dusk, she’s always felt more at ease in nature than with people. She traveled from Bangladesh to Brooklyn to live with the Saleems: her uncle Anwar, aunt Hashi, and their beautiful daughter, Charu, her complete opposite. One summer, when Ella returns home from college, she discovers Charu’s friend Maya—an Islamic cleric’s runaway daughter—asleep in her bedroom. As the girls have a summer of clandestine adventure and sexual awakenings, Anwar—owner of a popular botanical apothecary—has his own secrets, threatening his thirty-year marriage. Book excerpt: Amber Moon, starts her autobiography from her youngest age of two about the different abuses she endured while growing up through her adolescence years into her teenage years. Throughout the novel, she expresses the actions and emotions how she overcame her abuse in hopes to help others. A nice day out. I was only 4. My brother Tim and I had been home with my dad all week while mother has been working at the hospital taking care of patients. She's a LPN. After breakfast my dad came out back and told us we were going to the "icebox" to go fish with Rob today and we needed to get inside and get ready. Oh how I can remember my brother being so happy. Me...I felt panic. As I knew this was going to be a day of drinking and torture as it always was when my dad and his friend are together. We had gotten to the sink hole of a fishing place, it was back behind a lot of trees. I can still remember the smell to this day and how dirty it was. I often wondered why we ate the fish from that place. The water was always filled with trash. Yes, refrigerators too. Yet everyone in Hornell fished there. My dad set up the fishing rods on the bank and told me to sit on the ground that I wasn't good enough to sit in a chair, they are used only for men. As I watched my father, Rob and my brother all sit down in one. I sat in a pile of muddy grass patch that had trash in it. Crying, my dad slapped me across the face and asked me, "Do you want another?" As he raised his hand over his head. I curled up my legs and hugged them close to my chest in hopes I would not get hit again. Instead he pulls out his Polaroid from the back seat of his truck and takes a picture. As he yells, "Come on you little pussy."

Book excerpt: A dramatic and thought-provoking novel of one family's triumph in the face of the hardships and challenges of the post-Civil War South. The Wake of the Wind, J. California Cooper's third novel, is her most penetrating look yet at the challenges that generations of African Americans have had to overcome in order to carve out a home for themselves and their families. Set in Texas in the waning years of the Civil War, the novel tells the dramatic story of a remarkable heroine, Lifee, and her husband, Mor. When Emancipation finally comes to Texas, Mor, Lifee, and the extended family they create from other slaves who are also looking for a home and a future, set out in search of a piece of land they can call their own. In the face of constant threats, they manage not only to survive but to succeed--their crops grow, their children thrive, they educate themselves and others. Lifee and Mor pass their intelligence, determination, and talents along to their children, the next generation to surge forward. At once tragic and triumphant, this is an epic story that captures with extraordinary authenticity the most important struggle of the last hundred years.

Book excerpt: Drawn from Florida history, folklore, and fiction, this collection of stories tailor-made for telling will entertain, inspire, and astound readers and listeners of all ages. Cracker Jack is up to his old tricks: putting one over on his Yankee schoolteacher; confounding a census taker; and convincing a befuddled farmer that its not Saturday but Sunday (and if the preacher finds him working on a Sunday, well, there'll be you-know-what to pay!). Sheriff "Pogy" Bill Collins used to be the worst lawbreaker in Okeechobee City. Then he promised Judge Hancock that hed walk the straight and narrow in return for his release from jail. Pogy Bill kept his promise to the judge ... and then some. In a place called Dogbone, its really not that unusual to see a glow-in-the-dark man running naked after a driverless truck with two barking dogs in pursuit. It even made Ed Grady an honest-to-goodness churchgoer. Previous in series/pp
