He had an insurance business but was elected to U.S. Congress, where he served from 1927-1933 and 1935 to 1945, also serving in the Marines, 1942-1945. A man of great personal courage, Maas singlehandedly faced down a deranged armed man who took over the House of Representatives with a loaded revolver. When he learned he was going blind, Maas determined to continue to live his life well, joining the President’s Committee on Employment of the Physically Handicapped in 1949, and chairing that Committee from 1954-1964.
