Book Synopsis Edinburgh's Festivals by : David Pollock
Download or read book Edinburgh's Festivals written by David Pollock and published by Luath Press Ltd. This book was released on 2023-08-04 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1947, an émigré Austrian opera impresario launched the Edinburgh International Festival of Music and Drama to heal the scars of the Second World War through a celebration of the arts. At the same time, a socialist theatre group from Glasgow and other amateur companies protested their exclusion from the festival by performing anyway, inventing the concept of 'fringe' theatre. Now the annual celebration known collectively as the Edinburgh Festival is the largest arts festival in the world, incorporating events dedicated to theatre, film, art, literature, comedy, dance, jazz and even military pageantry. It has launched careers – from Peter Cook and Dudley Moore in Beyond the Fringe to Phoebe Waller-Bridge with Fleabag – mirrored the political and social mood of its times, shaped the city of Edinburgh around it and welcomed a huge all-star cast, including Orson Welles, Grace Kelly, Yehudi Menuhin and Mark E Smith's The Fall and many many more. This is its story.

Book Synopsis Black is the New White by : Nakkiah Lui
Download or read book Black is the New White written by Nakkiah Lui and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Nakkiah Lui's writing is, as always, on point: hold-your-belly funny; pumping with politics that prompts visible discomfort.' Maxine Beneba Clark, Saturday Paper 'Her writing, whether devastating or hilarious, has always shown a great deal of accessible humanity and relentless intelligence.' Guardian 'We needed a new David Williamson, someone who speaks to Australia and Australians now. We've found her in Nakkiah.' Alex Broun, playwright 'Mount Druitt's answer to Lena Dunham.' Belvoir Theatre 'If there is such a thing as a rockstar playwright, Nakkiah Lui is it.' Fran Kelly, RN Love, politics and other things you shouldn't talk about at dinner Charlotte Gibson is a lawyer with a brilliant career ahead of her. As her father Ray says, she could be the next female Indigenous Waleed Aly. But she has other ideas. First of all, it's Christmas. Second of all, she's in love. The thing is, her fiance, Francis Smith, is not what her family expected - he's unemployed, he's an experimental composer ... and he's white! Bringing him and his conservative parents to meet her family on their ancestral land is a bold move. Will he stand up to the scrutiny? Or will this romance descend into farce? Love is never just black and white. It's complicated by class, politics, ambition, and too much wine over dinner. But for Charlotte and Francis, it's mostly complicated by family. Secrets are revealed, prejudices outed and old rivalries get sorted through. What can't be solved through diplomacy can surely be solved by a good old-fashioned dance-off. They're just that kind of family. Award-winning writer Nakkiah Lui shows why she is one of this country's most in-demand young voices, delivering cutting satire that is both seductively subversive and thoroughly delightful.
Download or read book Detritus written by Robyn Archer and published by UWA Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Let's promote all artforms - the ephemeral as well as the solid and saleable - for all the things our people do as creative individuals to stimulate our brains and our own individual and collective creative muscle.' Robyn Archer has been a redoubtable player in Australia's arts and cultural communities for decades - as a feminist, festival director and singer and writer. In this passionate collection of speeches, some even in song, Archer investigates the artistic process - the myriad ways in which artists create a body of work - and the importance of how we, the public, regard, value and use that work. Book Synopsis Loading the Silence: Australian Sound Art in the Post-Digital Age by : Linda Ioanna Kouvaras
Download or read book Loading the Silence: Australian Sound Art in the Post-Digital Age written by Linda Ioanna Kouvaras and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experimentalist phenomenon of 'noise' as constituting 'art' in much twentieth-century music (paradoxically) reached its zenith in Cage’s (’silent’ piece) 4’33 . But much post-1970s musical endeavour with an experimentalist telos, collectively known as 'sound art', has displayed a postmodern need to ’load’ modernism’s ’degree zero’. After contextualizing experimentalism from its inception in the early twentieth century, Dr Linda Kouvaras’s Loading the Silence: Australian Sound Art in the Post-Digital Age explores the ways in which selected sound art works demonstrate creatively how sound is embedded within local, national, gendered and historical environments. Taking Australian music as its primary - but not sole - focus, the book not only covers discussions of technological advancement, but also engages with aesthetic standpoints, through numerous interviews, theoretical developments, analysis and cultural milieux for a contemporary Australian, and wider postmodern, context. Developing new methodologies for synergies between musicology and cultural studies, the book uncovers a new post-postmodern aesthetic trajectory, which Kouvaras locates as developing over the past two decades - the altermodern. Australian sound art is here put firmly on the map of international debates about contemporary music, providing a standard reference and valuable resource for practitioners in the artform, music critics, scholars and educators.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Screendance Studies by : Douglas Rosenberg
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Screendance Studies written by Douglas Rosenberg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Screendance Studies offers a full overview of the histories, practices, and critical and theoretical foundations of the rapidly changing landscape of screendance. Drawing on their practices, technologies, theories, and philosophies, scholars from the fields of dance, performance, visual art, cinema and media arts articulate the practice of screendance as an interdisciplinary, hybrid form that has yet to be correctly sited as an academic field worthy of critical investigation. Each chapter discusses and reframe current issues, as a means of promoting and enriching dialogue within the wider community of dance and the moving image. Topics addressed embrace politics of the body; agency, race, and gender in screendance; the relationship of choreography to image; constructs of space and time; representation and effacement; production and curatorial practice; and other areas of intersecting disciplines. The Oxford Handbook of Screendance Studies features newly-commissioned and original scholarship that will be essential reading for all those interested in the intersection of dance and the moving image, including film and video-makers, dance artists, screendance artists, academics and writers, producers, composers, as well as the wider interested public. It will become an invaluable resource for researchers and professionals in the field.
