Book Synopsis Victoria's Heritage by : A. G. L. Shaw
Download or read book Victoria's Heritage written by A. G. L. Shaw and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victoria's 150th anniversary celebrations have put the spotlight on the state, and on its cultural and environmental development. In this book, leading historians survey that development across a number of important areas including literature, painting, environmental control, drama and architecture. After an introduction by A. G. L Shaw setting the social, economic and political scene, Graham Davison describes the evolution of a Melbourne 'image' in pictures and in planning. Marjorie Harper, by contrast, looks at the development of public policy over the period by reference to three major Melbourne economists - Copland, Downing and Henderson. Chris Wallace-Crabbe both summarises and catches the flavour of Victorian literature, J. M. Powell raises major questions for the state's future in his discussion of planning and the environment, while Frank von Straten recalls a host of memories in a chapter on popular entertainment. Margaret Plant, in 'Visual Victoria', ranges from the work of Eugene von Guerard through the Heidelberg School to the painters of today, and Conrad Hamann asks, after his summary of twentieth century Victorian architecture, whether we have come nearer to a distinctively Australian style. Finally, Howard Love traces a rich strain of drama and music in colonial Melbourne. What constitutes a distinctively Victorian, or even Australian, culture will always be the subject of long debate. This book cannot provide comprehensive answers, but it will provide a rich store of information, and some answers, for all those interested in the state's history, as students, teachers... or simply Victorians.

Download or read book Future Histories written by Lizzie O'Shea and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A highly engaging tour through progressive history in the service of emancipating our digital tomorrow Shortlisted for the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award, Australia When we talk about technology we always talk about tomorrow and the future—which makes it hard to figure out how to even get there. In Future Histories, public interest lawyer and digital specialist Lizzie O'Shea argues that we need to stop looking forward and start looking backwards. Weaving together histories of computing and progressive social movements with modern theories of the mind, society, and self, O'Shea constructs a “usable past” that can help us determine our digital future. What, she asks, can the Paris Commune tell us about earlier experiments in sharing resources—like the Internet—in common? How can Frantz Fanon's theories of anti colonial self-determination help us build digital world in which everyone can participate equally? Can debates over equal digital access be helped by American revolutionary Tom Paine's theories of democratic, economic redistribution? What can indigenous land struggles teach us about stewarding our digital climate? And, how is Elon Musk not a future visionary but a steampunk throwback to Victorian-era technological utopians? In engaging, sparkling prose, O'Shea shows us how very human our understanding of technology is, and how when we draw on the resources of the past, we can see the potential for struggle, for liberation, for art and poetry in our technological present. Future Histories is for all of us—makers, coders, hacktivists, Facebook-users, self-styled Luddites—who find ourselves in a brave new world.
Book Synopsis Hunters and Collectors by : Tom Griffiths
Download or read book Hunters and Collectors written by Tom Griffiths and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-04 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hunters and Collectors is about historical consciousness and environmental sensibilities in European Australia from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. It is in part a collective biography of amateur antiquarians, archaeologists, naturalists, journalists and historians: people who shaped the Australian historical imagination. Dr Griffiths illuminates the way these avid collectors and investigators of the Australian land and of its indigenous inhabitants contributed a sense of identity at colony-wide and eventually nationwide level. He also considers the rise of professional history, anthropology and archaeology in the universities, which ignored the efforts of the amateurs. Griffiths shows how the seemingly trivial activities of these hunters and collectors feed into the political and environmental debates of the 1990s. This book is outstanding in its originality, interpretative insight and literary flair.

Book Synopsis The Time of Their Lives by : Julie Kimber
Download or read book The Time of Their Lives written by Julie Kimber and published by Australian Society for the Study of Labour History. This book was released on 2007-07-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 21 April 1856 Melbourne building workers won an industry-wide agreement to establish the Eight Hour Day. In the 150 years since then the slogan ‘Eight Hours Labour, Eight Hours Recreation, Eight Hours Rest’ has symbolised workers’ efforts to take control over the time of their lives and, in doing so, strike a civilised balance between work, rest and play. It was an assertion that they were not simply ‘operatives’ in a labour market, but also family members and citizens in what they hoped could become a civilised community. This book offers historical perspectives on that continuing campaign to give readers a long-term context for our current debates over the work/life balance and power in the workplace.
